During November, we are called in a special way "to remember our brother and sisters who have gone to the rest". An envelope is made available for you to inscribe the names of their beloved dead who would be remembered in prayer during this month.

Vote on November 8^th. Absentee ballots are already available. Call the County Registrar of Voters. Vote "YES" on Proposition 73. One of the most important issues in the November 8^th election will be Prop 73, which will require a doctor to notify a parent 48 hours before doing an abortion on a girl under the age of 18. In order to vote November 8^th, you must be registered by tomorrow, October 24^th.

The Christ Child family adopted nearly 50 families in Greenfield last year. There continues to be a need this year and we are in the process of gathering information from families in Greenfield. While planning for the holiday season, we hope you will consider adopting a family on Nov 19^th or 20^th when we will have the information on the families. What a wonderful way to show thanks to our Lord for all that he has given us.

The knowledge of being loved in an unconditional way, before the world presents us with its conditions, cannot come from books, lectures, television programs or workshops. This spiritual knowledge comes from people who witness to God’s love for us through their words and deeds. These people can be close to us but they can also live far away or may even have lived long ago. Their witness announces the truth of God’s love and calls us to act in accordance with it.

In our nation’s archives there is an account of two women from Tennessee who came before President Abraham Lincoln at the conclusion of the Civil war. They were asking for the release of their husbands held as prisoners of war at Johnson’s Island. Lincoln put them off until Friday, when they came again. Again the President put them off until Saturday. At each of the interview one of the ladies stressed to Lincoln that her husband was a religious man. After the Saturday interview the President ordered the release of the prisoners. Then he turned to this lady and said, "You say your husband is a religious man. Tell him when you meet him, that I say I am not much of a judge of religion. In my opinion, however, the religion that sets men to rebel and fight against their governments… (so that they can) eat their bread on the sweat of other men’s faces, is not the sort of religion upon which people can get to heaven!"

Each year at tax time, we conscientiously give "to Caesar what belongs to Caesar." Does my stewardship indicate that I am as faithful about giving "to God what belongs to God"?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that strong societies depend on strong families. "The family is the ‘original cell of social life… Authority, stability, and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundation for freedom, security, and fraternity within society." Prop 73 will require doctors to notify a parent 48 hours before performing an abortion on a girl under 18 years old. Register to Vote in the November 8^th election. In order to vote, you must be registered by October 24^th.

The Body and the Liturgy.

To express one of its main ideas for the shaping of the liturgy, the Second Vatican Council gave us the phrase ‘participatio actuosa,’ the "active participation" of everyone in the ‘opus Dei’ action of God, in what happens in the worship of God. It was quite right to do so.

The word "part-icipation" refers to a principal action in which everyone has a "part". And so if we want to discover the kind of doing that active participation involves, we need, first of all, to determine what this central ‘actio’ is in which all the members of the community are supposed to participate.

The study of the liturgical sources provides an answer that at first may surprise us, though, in the light of the biblical foundations considered in the first part, it is quite self-evident. By the ‘actio’ of the liturgy the sources mean the Eucharistic Prayer. The real liturgical action, the true liturgical act, is the ‘oratio,’ the great prayer that forms the core of the Eucharistic celebration, the whole of which was, therefore, called ‘oratio’ by the Fathers.

Perhaps it would be useful to note here that the word ‘oratio originally means, not "prayer" (for which the word is ‘prex’), but solemn public speech. Such speech now attains its supreme dignity through its being addressed to God in full awareness that it comes from him and is made possible by him.

But this is only just a hint of the central issue. This ‘oratio’ –the Eucharist Prayer, the "Canon"- is really more than speech; it is ‘actio’ in the highest sense of the word.

The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel. At vintage time the master will return to receive the harvest. May we bear fruit in plenty, and be pleasing in his sight by living lives that are marked by love and respect.

I finally realize why I’ve grown to appreciate autumn so much. It is because the trees tell me so much about life, especially about the inner season of our lives. Each year as I begin to notice that the leaves are going golden, I reflect that the trees seem to give themselves over to the "letting go" process much more freely than humans.

Trees readily allow autumn to have their summer leaves. Trees allow the frost to touch them and the wind to toss them. They allow the season to make it appear that all is lost and that there is no green growth left. But they know better, for even at their most barren moment, when one can look among the branches and see scars and knotholes the leaves once hid, the trees already show terminal buds with the secret of next spring’s leafing in them.

We humans have a lot to learn from autumn trees. No one of us wants to be so surrendered, so vulnerable to winter as the October trees. Yet, each of us, if we are truly open to growth and change, will experience this in our inner selves. Our relationships and our experiences of life will ask us to be open, to be willing to let go in order that new growth can come.

New growth means change. Trees tell us this. Life tells us this. Jesus tells us this. One of the most beautiful aspects of the Incarnation is that the Son of God allowed himself to be vulnerable. He came as one of us and he opened himself up in love to the possibility of failure, being wounded, misunderstood, and rejected, all of those things that we know as "daily dyings," like those autumn leaves fast falling from trees.

Jesus allowed himself to be vulnerable. To be vulnerable in this way is to freely choose:

-To be open to the others, no matter whom that other is.
-To stand firmly on our convictions amid controversy.
-To risk our voice or actions even though there’s a possibility of being misunderstood, rejected, thwarted or even condemned.
-To share from our faith even through we may be questioned or ignored, laughed at or thought to be stupid.
-To risk failure in order to discover and use our giftedness and potential.
-To love and to continue loving even when there is not positive response from the one being loved.

In her book Meditations for Misfits, Marcia Ford shared the following;

"One Sunday morning, our pastor interrupted his sermon on hope. ‘Those of you who have adult children that you’re praying for, children who have left the faith or never embraced the faith and are now living apart from God, I want you to stand,’ he said. The rest of us sat and watched as these grieving parents stood. "Now, those of you who were once wayward children, who in your adult years had strayed far from God and have since returned, I want you to stand.’ As dozens of us rose to our feet –yes, of course, I was part of the second group- he said, ‘Moms, Dads, there’s your hope."

Today Gospel should be a source of hope for those of us struggling to help our children understand and appreciate our faith in the God of compassion and forgiveness. Even though they may eschew the rituals and traditions of our faith, haven’t they embraced, for the most part, the Gospel values they have learned for us? Christ promises that despite their rejection of God, God has not rejected them; he continues to be present to them in their own acts of "righteousness." So rejoice in hope. Mom and Dad, and be patient: God is with us despite ourselves.

Classes for the preparation for confirmation will start on October 1^st. at 3:30 p.m., that’s Saturday before the 5:00 p.m. Mass. This is a two-year and open to high school students. Parents are expected at this meeting.

After an appropriate space and time for reflection after Communion, the people begin moving out of this deep silence, stillness and communal solitude, back into the world of words, and sometimes frenetic activity and sociological responsibility in family, church, and work in the world.

After this time, church will move to the more functional aspects of the Church and local civil community by way of announcements. These sometimes seem a bit schizophrenic after the very personal and intimate things we have just experienced, but they are really a natural outgrowth and progression from the deep mystery of the Eucharist into the functional realities of life. It is, in fact, there that the new evangelization, the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ through all that we are, takes place in the most tangible ways.

It is during this Liturgy of the Eucharist that the ondained minister of the Church representing apostolic succession, and the faculties granted with or from the local bishop, first invokes the power of the Holy Spirit over the elements (bread & wine), in the "Epiclesis" within the Eucharistic Prayer, and then with word and gesture, and the power of his office, confects the Eucharist, changing the simple elements of bread and wine into the real presence of Jesus, body and blood, under the appearance of bread and wine.

This is the fullness of sign, symbol, and sacrament.
All that is Church is represented in this ineffable coming together of every aspect of the faith.
The priest is there, who represents the whole of the Christian community to God, and the whole of Jesus to the Christian community.
The gesture is there, representing that Jesus came in the flesh and that he saves us full and entire, inclusive, not only in spirit, but also our body.
The Word is there, representing not just a written word, not just a vaguely interpretive apostolic tradition, but its fullness, scripture, and tradition and the magisterium of the Church.
The Church is there, in the priest or bishop and people, who represent not only Christ and the fullness of the Church but the apostles of the Church as well, the fullness of apostolic succession.

The Fearful Heart

In a beautiful little book, Making All Things New, Henri Nouwen points to worrying as a major hindrance of spiritual growth: "One of the most notable characteristics of worrying is that it fragments our lives. The many things to do, to think about, to pray for, the many people to remember, to visit, or to talk with, the many causes to attack or defend, all these pull us apart and make us lose our center.
Worrying causes us to be "all over the place," but seldom at home. One way to express the spiritual crisis of our time is to say that most of us have an address but cannot be found there.
We know where we belong, but we keep being pulled away in many directions, as if we were still homeless.
"All these other things" keep demanding our attention.
They lead us so far from home that we eventually forget our true address, that is, the place where we can be addressed."
A good question to ask is: "Why do I worry?" and "What do I worry about?"
Jesus said: "It is I. Do not be afraid"
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife."
"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul."
"Yahweh is my light and my salvation, whom need I fear?"
