Guardian of this New Year, I set aside my fears, worries, concerns, I open my life to mystery, to beauty, to hospitality, to questions, to the endless opportunity of discovering you in my relationship, and to all the silent wisps of wonder that will draw me to your heart.

In the Spirit of the Season of Christmas
Dearly beloved, today our Savior is born; let us rejoice. Sadness should have no place on the birthday of life. The fear of death has been swallowed up; life brings us JOY with the promise of eternal happiness.
Christians, remember your dignity, and now that you share in God's own nature, do not return by sin to your former base condition.
Bear in mind who is your head and of whose body you are a member. Do not forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of God's kingdom.

I think the world TODAY is upside down, and is suffering so much, because there is so very little love in the homes and in family life. We have no time for our children, we have no time for each other; there is no time to enjoy each other. I we could only bring back into our lives the life that Jesus, Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth, if we could make our home another Nazareth, I think that peace and JOY would reign in the world.

A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
May there be harmony in all your relationships. May sharp words, envious thoughts, and hostile feelings be dissolved.
May you give and receive love generously. May this love echo in your heart like the joy of church bells on a clear December day.
May each person who comes into your life be greeted as another Christ. May the honor given the Babe of Bethlehem ("The house of Bread.") be that which you extend to every guest who enters your presence.
May the hope of this sacred season settle in your soul. May it be a foundation of courage for you when times of distress occupy your inner land.
May the wonder and awe that fills the eyes of children be awakened within you. May it lead you to renewed awareness and appreciation of whatever you too easily take for granted.
May the bonds of love for one another be strengthened as you gather with your family and friends around the table of festivity and nourishment.
May you daily open the gifts of your life and be grateful for the hidden treasures it contains.
May the coming year be one of good health for you. May you have energy and vitality. May you care well for your body, mind, and spirit.
May you keep your eye on the Star within you and trust this Luminescent Presence to guide and direct you each day.

The Many Disguises of Emmanuel
Emmanuel, God-with-us, long awaited, eagerly anticipated, delicious dreams of royal robes, a messiah enthroned with elegance.
False notions and easily accepted illusions.
A few open ones, full surprise, heard the fresh, full cry of life echoed in the uninhabited haven, the only place ready for a birth that was ripe.
Shepherds, sages, and scribes, drawn by angels and stars, discovered this divine simplicity, and then hurried from the hillside with news that amazed them all.
But many years later the cry goes unheard, stifled in the roar of unyielding opinions, submerged in the noise of hasty judgments, masked in the false folds of cultural glitter.
The Surprising One continues to come, entering the world in endless disguise, concealed in those we have never forgiven, secreted in the hearts of people we despise,
found in the rejected and unacceptable, hidden in the one we ignore and criticize.CONFESSIONS

PRAYER GROUPS
All are invited to attend at the Community Center.
A women's prayer group meeting at 8:00 a.m. prior to the Tuesday Mass.
A men's prayer group meeting at 7:15 a.m. prior to the Thursday Mass.
The Newman Catholic Center, Santa Cruz, which serves UCSC, CSUMB and Cabrillo College, is sponsoring a benefit dinner on Saturday, January 27, 2007. The dinner will be held at St. Joseph's Parish Hall at 435 Monterey Avenue, Capitola, CA. The festivities start at 6:00 PM. with no-host cocktails and a New York Strip Steak dinner at 7:00 PM. Donation for the dinner is $30.00 per person. Raffle tickets for a Madonna Statue are $5.00 each and silent auction will be held during the dinner. Please call the Newman Catholic Center for tickets and information at 831.423.9400. If you wish to donate items for the silent auction please contact the center as well.
Catholic around the world treasure a rich variety of Christmas traditions:
-The POSADA is a traditional Mexican procession. On each of nine nights, beginning on December 16, participants play the part of the Holy Family, villagers, and innkeepers, and process to a home seeking shelter. Each procession is followed by a party, the greatest celebration being the last one on Christmas Eve. The parties are customarily preceded by prayer.
-In Poland, it is customary to share an oplatek on Christmas Eve. An oplatek is a wafer into which a scene of the Nativity is pressed. It is blessed, and pieces are share by the family.
-In the Philippines, many erect parols, or star-shaped lanterns, along roadways and in front of houses as a sign of welcome and hope for peace.

God of all those who yearn for a glimmer of assurance on the long journey home to you, come! Come with a vast storehouse of renewed dreams, hopes, and peacefulness.
God of hope, come! Enter into my memory and remind me often of the yearning of the people of history. Stir up stories of how the ancestors hung on to your promises, how they stole hope from tiny glimmers about you, passes on from age to age. Help me to hear the loud, crying voices of the prophets who proclaimed that a new age would dawn.
God of hope, come! Enter into the lives of all those I hold dear the ones whose lives are marked with pain, struggle, and deep anxiety, those whose lives bear ongoing heartaches, those whose difficulties threaten to overwhelm them with helplessness and despair. Come and gift them with a deep belief about you and your never-ending faithfulness and companionship.
God of hope, come! Enter into this Advent season with the grace of joy and laughter. Fill faces with smiles of delight and voices with sounds of pleasure. Let this gifts come from deep within. Replenish all with the joyful blessings that only your peace can bring.
God of hope, come! Be the Morning Star in our midst, the Light that can never go out, the Beacon of Hope guiding our way to you. Come into our midst and make of our lives a home, where your everlasting goodness resonates with assuring love and vigorous hope.

Come Home for Christmas
The largest body of Christian believers in American today is the Roman Catholic. Recent research shows that the second largest body, some 18 million, consists of those Catholic who no longer practice their faith. Who will welcomes them back and offer a place of belonging? Will you?

Think about family members, friends, neighbors, etc. that you can invite to our Christmas liturgy celebration and extend a warm welcome to join you and our parish community at Mass.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

ADVENT meaning "coming towards" in Latin, Advent is the time marking Christ's coming to earth, and now refers to the 24 days preceding Christmas Day itself- from December 3rd to 24th.
Human beings cannot live without hope. Unlike the animals, we are blessed-or-cursed-with the ability to think about the future and to fear our actions to shaping it. So essential is this to human life, that human beings cannot live without hope, without something to live for, without something to look forward to. To be without hope, to have nothing to live for, is to surrender to death in despair. But we can find all sorts of things to live for and we can hope for almost anything: for some measure of success or security or for the realization of some more or less modest ambition; for our children, that they might be saved from our mistakes and sufferings and find a better life than we have known; for a better world, throwing ourselves into politics or medicine or technology so that future generation might be better off. Not all these forms of hope are selfish; indeed, they have given dignity and purpose to the lives of countless generations.
But one of the reasons why we read the Old Testament during Advent is to learn what to hope for. The people of the Old Testament had the courage to hope for big things: that the desert would be turned into fertile land; that their scattered and divided people would eventually be gathered again; that the blind would see, the deaf hear, the lame walk; that not only their own people but all the people of the earth, would be united in the blessings of everlasting peace. Clearly, their hopes were no different from ours or from any human being's: lasting peace, tranquil lives, sufficiency of food, and end to suffering, pain and misery.
The coming of Jesus in history, as a partial fulfillment of God's promises, immeasurably confirms and strengthens our hope. Advent help us recognized the new situation and in discerning the presence of our Savior in the world.

Third Annual Giving at Greenfield
Adopt a Greenfield family today after mass. Information on each family will be available at the entrance of the church. All gifts should be dropped off at Christ Child after mass on Saturday, Dec. 16 or Sunday Dec. 17. Can't shop? Consider a cash donation and we'll do the shopping for you! Feel you can't adopt a whole family? Consider adopting one child or perhaps adopt a family with a few Christ Child friends. Jimmy was about ten years old. A gang of teenagers gave him a lot of trouble: they pushed him off the sidewalk, tripped him in the school-yard, and even stole his lunch money. For fear they would give him a beating or cut him with the knife they flashed, Jimmy never told anyone. One day this gang of punks got especially rough. Jimmy blurted out: "I'm going to tell my big brother on you." They sneered: "Bring him on. The bigger they are, the harder they fall."
Several days later the gang saw Jimmy coming down the street, walking beside a husky six-footer dressed in an army uniform with several rows of service ribbons. It was Jimmy's big brother Bob, just returned from Vietnam. Suddenly Bob demanded: "Okay, you little punks, give him the money you took." They emptied their pockets and then promised to get the rest of the stolen money.

The end of time is a fearful concept for all of us, but if we read the Scriptures carefully it is also a time of great joy. When Jesus comes again it will not be the end of the world but merely the end of the world as we know it. God will "make all things new". The earth will not be destroyed, but made as it was meant to be in the beginning, and even better! Let us wait with joy and hope for Jesus' second coming.

The Lord Jesus, word of God, looked at those who were giving. He judged on quality, not quantity. What quality of gifts do we offer to God and to our neighbors? God's living word is given freely for each of us to unchain ourselves from sin. When he returns he will reward with salvation those who are waiting. Let us wait in this line.

The one true sacrifice that wins our salvation is the absolute self-offering in love of Jesus Christ on the cross. The fruit of that sacrifice in us is holiness of love. To be holy is to participate in, reflect, and offer to all the unimaginable love that Christ has shown for the Father and for us. Our self-offering in love to the God we worship and the neighbor we serve is our true sacrifice.

RESPECT
"The one who wants to be great among you must be your servant, even the slaves of all." For Christians, to lead is to be "of service to others," a complicated and difficult task.
It is too easy (and un-Christian) to demand respect, to lord it over others. The Messiah-Christ is the suffering servant who "justifies many, taking their faults on himself." So Jesus washed his disciples' feet. Jesus knows and feels our weakness from his own experience. We then can have confidence in His help for us.

Dear friends,
Next weekend we observe Respect Life Sunday.
Every human being is an image of God and deserves respect, protection and reverence. Human beings have a supernatural destiny: to be united with God and the communion or saints in heaven.
Respect for human life –from pre-birth to natural death- is a hallmark of our Catholic Church and something we can all be proud of.
For me… life is the most beautiful gifts of God to mankind, therefore people and nations who destroy life by abortion, euthanasia, terrorism and war are the poorest –for they have not got food and place for one more child, home for one old person, for one human being that is different of them. So they must add one more cruel murder into this world.

OCTOBER MONTH OF THE ROSARY
In the Western Church; the Rosary, says the Roman Breviary, "is a certain form of prayer wherein we say twenty decades or tens of Hail Marys with an Our Father between each ten, while at each of these twenty decades we recall successively in pious meditation one of the mysteries of our Redemption."
The same lesson for the Feast of the Holy Rosary informs us that when the Albigensian heresy was devastating the country of Toulouse, St. Dominic earnestly besought the help of Our Lady and was instructed by her, "so tradition assets," to preach the Rosary among the people as an antidote to heresy and sin.
Beginning in 1883, issued by Pope Leon XIII, which, while commending this devotion to the faithful in the most earnest terms, assumes the institution of the Rosary by St. Dominic to be a fact historically established.
The term "rosary" refers to the repetition of prayers as well as the string of beads on which prayers are actually recited. One of the many meanings of the word "rosary" is "wreath of roses", symbolizing the string of prayers. The word derives from the Latin rosarium, or "rose garden", a contemplative place for meditation associated with the garden og Eden and Paradise.

"What were you arguing about?"
Who is the greatest and most important? In this year of transition, we see easily how fleeting fame is. Today Jesus asks us to become childlike and welcome God. Then we become a reproach to hypocrisy, wickedness and "getting ahead at all costs." The change makes us like children. In welcoming Jesus, we welcome the one who sent him, the heavenly Father, and the life-giving Spirit. Now there is a childlike wonder –and real importance!

Living Faith
"Who do people say I am?" Everyone asks that question. Often we are pushed by people into places we do not want to be –the wrong places.
Today Peter gets rebuked because his thinking is "not God's way." In our lives, faith in God needs actions to express it, strengthen it and make it grow. Otherwise faith is dead and only an abstraction –interesting, maybe, as a monument to something past. Certainly not for today's world. If you can say today "I am a faith-filled Christian," do you think others can detect your faith through your actions?

Respect for Life starts in the family. For Father Mike Miller, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Salinas, starting life as the oldest of four children and 38 grandchildren, shaped and nurtured his 33 years vocation. For formal training, he earned degrees in Latin and Greek, and in Systematic Theology from St. Meinrad's Archabbey in Indiana, and PhD in Systematic Theology from the Berkley Theological Union.
Father Miller brings a fresh perspective to Respect Life issues. He recently completed a six month sabbatical which accomplished tree goals: rediscovering his roots and history; experiencing the four gospels "on site" in Israel; and visiting early Christian and Benedictine shrines in Europe.

Triumph of the Cross (14 Sept.)
On the cross, Jesus has shown us how far God's love goes. It's a love which embraces even those who crucified him. When Jesus is hanging nailed to the cross, totally broken and stripped of everything, he still prays for his executioners: "Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing." Jesus' love for his enemies knows no bounds. He prays even for those are putting him to death.

BACKBONE
Lobster shell or backbone? Which do we want? The law can be used in different ways. Jesus argued for law as backbone. He looked at the real purpose of "clean and unclean," "exterior and interior," adherence to the word planted within. When law is backbone, then we have cause to exercise and grow in the Lord, supported and strengthened in the truth. In his life, Christ Jesus, who is the way of service to one another, leads us by the power of the Holy Spirit to the Father.

The Connection between the Eucharist and Work.
The Eucharistic Christ, daily Bread of the Christian, is the most powerful cause of our sanctification and also the inexhaustible source of a dialogue that is total and constantly renewed. But this dialogue, if it is to develop properly, needs to take place in the context of mutual work and production.
The humanization of nature by the work of human beings, the producer of bread and wine, is the ever-renewed presupposition for the divinization of workers through the Eucharist.
Working together is necessary for producing the matter of the sacrament. Its institution presupposes, throughout the holy history of Israel, the experience of human communion rooted in the transformation and humanization of nature through work…
Man is all of a piece; his spiritual life enlightens his mind and strengthens his free will, thus resonating through all his earthly activity.
The Eucharist is a symbol of productive labor. The matter of the Eucharistic sacrifice speaks of temporal production already achieved today within the frame-work of the three sectors of economy: agriculture supplies wheat and grapes, industry the machines which transform these into bread and wine and services coordinate their distribution.

THE BIRTH OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
(8 September)Mary experienced uncertainty and insecurity when she said yes to the angel. She knew what oppression was when she didn't find a hospitable place to give to Jesus. She knew the sufferings of mothers who see their children being thrown in the air and pierced by bayonets; she lived as a refugee in a strange land with a strange language and strange customs; she knew what it means to have a child who does not follow the regular ways of life but creates turmoil wherever he goes; she felt the loneliness of the widow and the agony of seeing her only son being executed. Indeed, Mary is the woman who stands next to all the poor, oppressed, and lonely women of our time. And when she continues to speak to people it is the simple and the poor to whom she appears: Juan Diego, the simple old Mexican Indian of Guadalupe; Bernadette, the poor sickly girl in Lourdes; Lucia, Jacinta, and Francesco, the unspectacular children in Fatima.

"We are to look beyond the "saying" to the Say-er. This is what it means to "be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ." CONFIRMATION
Confirmation is a two years program eligible to all high school students. There will be a confirmation information meeting for candidates and their parents/guardians on this Sunday August 27 after Mass.
This meeting is for anyone who interested in Confirmation and would like to find out more about the program.
To start classes the last second weekend in September, Saturday, September 9th at 3:00 p.m. before the 5:00 p.m. Mass.

GIFT AND GIVER
"Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine I have prepared! If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you."
What a glorious and disturbing invitation to share in the ultimate sacrifice; Jesus, Son of God, is both the gift and gift-giver.
He calls us to partake in his work: his Eucharist, his thanksgiving.
We recognize the Lord's will: come to the heavenly wedding feast!
The Mass of all ages
On the day we call the day of the sun, all who dwell in the city or country gather in the same place.
The memoirs of the apostles and the writings of the prophets are read, as much as time permits.
When the reader has finished, he who presides over those gathered admonishes and challenges them to imitate these beautiful things.
Then we all rise together and offer prayers for ourselves… and for all others, wherever they may be, so that we may be found righteous by our life and actions, and faithful to the commandments, so as to obtain eternal salvation.
When the prayers are concluded we exchange the kiss.
Then someone brings bread and a cup of water and wine mixed together to him who presides over the brethren.
He takes them and offers praise and glory to the Father of the universe, through the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and for a considerable time he gives thanks (in Greek: eucharistian) that we have been judged worthy of these gifts.
When he has concluded the prayers and thanksgiving, all present give voice to an acclamation by saying: 'Amen.'
When he who presides has given thanks and the people have responded, those whom we call deacons give to those present the "eucharisted" bread, wine and water and take them to those who are absent.

Monday: Sixtus II, pope, martyr, and his companions. Sixtus II and four deacons; Januarius, Vincent, Magnus, and Stephen, were arrested on 6 Aug. 258 while celebrating the Eucharist in the cemetery of Callistus, by order of Valerian, they were decapitated that same Day.
Tuesday: Dominic de Guzman, died 6 August 1221, founded the Order of Preachers.
Wednesday: Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Edith Stein was born at Breslau, Germany in 1891 of Jewish parents. She studied philosophy under Husserl, the leading phenomenologies of his day. She was received into the Catholic Church in 1922, and in the following year entered the Carmelite convent in Cologne. She was arrested, transported to Poland, and killed at Auschwitz.
August 6 & 9 are the anniversaries of the atomic explosions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945). As these events are recalled all are urged to continue to pray for world peace.
Friday: Clare of Assisi, died 1253; disciple of Francis; founded the Poor Clares whose first convent at Assisi she directed as abbess for 42 years; led and austere life, rich in the practice of charity and loving care.

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD
When and where do we have an
experience of God's Glorious Presence, an experience of unity, and experience
of inner fulfillment, an experience of light in the darkness?
Peter says: You do well to be
attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and
the morning star rises in your hearts" (2 Peter 1:19).
Maybe we do not always fully
recognize our mountaintop experiences, we write them off as insignificant and
trivial compared with all the important and urgent things we have to do.
Still, Jesus wants us to see
his glory, so that we can cling to that experience in moments of doubt,
despair, or anguish. When we are attentive to the light within us and around
us, we will gradually see more and more of that light and even become a light
for others.
We have to trust that the
transfiguration experience is closer to us than we might think.

GOD'S GENEROSITY
The Lord fed a large crowd of people. After testing Philip and Andrew on logistics, he showed everyone that the priority lay elsewhere. With the usual generosity of members of the Holy Trinity, Jesus gave the crow as much as was wanted; then he ordered that leftovers be picked up so nothing would be wasted. Twelve baskets were left over-one for each apostle's use. This prophetic gesture foreshadowed the Eucharist. The Lord nourishes each of us in the bosom of the apostolic church.

GOD WANTS US TO BE HAPPY
For those who want to surrender themselves to Christ with steadfast hearts and give him their entire lives, there is a choice to be made, a decision to make. What decision? To let an unbounded gratefulness to God well up in us.
This gratefulness is a basic attitude. It is a peaceful joy always reawakened in us by the Holy Spirit (Lk 10:21). It is the spirit of praise. It attempts to view others and their aspirations with hopefulness.
God wants us to be happy. It is up us to detect the Gospel realities that make life beautiful: trust, the spirit of praise, an overflowing heart, a joy renewed at every moment…
In the New Testament, the apostle Peter assures us: "You love Christ although you have never seen him, and you believe in him though you still do not see him, so you are filled with a joy too deep for words that is already transfiguring you." (1 Pet 1:8).
And when fogs of hesitation arise, we are surprised to find ourselves saying, "We love you, Christ, perhaps not as we would like to, but we do love you. And what is most transparent in our lives it built up by a humble trusting in you."

To the disciples' delight, the master said he wanted a new shirt for his birthday. The finest cloth was brought. The village tailor came in to have the master measured, and promised, by the will of God, to make the shirt within a week.
A week went by and a disciple was dispatched to the tailor while the master excitedly waited for his shirt. Said the tailor, "there has been a slight delay. But, by the will of God, it will be ready by tomorrow."
Next day the tailor said, "I'm sorry it isn't done. Try again tomorrow and, by the will of God it will certainly be ready."

In the mailbox of my life I've found many forms of letters but the one I've most rejoiced in are the ones sent from my Lord.
They look most ordinary that no one would suspect they bear the blessed message of the truth about my heart.
Some letters bring me challenge to forego my hardened ways; some letters invite happiness and promise new delight.
Some letters gift my day with hope when all the world seems dark; some letters bear tough questions regarding weaknesses and sin.
Some letters send me healing when my heart is weary; some letters speak of loving and of giving beyond cost.
Some letters make me wonder how I ever could refuse, for they are letters of proposal for a love life with my God.
I know that I'll keep coming to the mailbox of my life, because the letters tell of Jesus and pursue me with his truth.

ANNUAL HIKE TO THE RAILROAD TUNNEL
Corky Lakin will lead the Annual Hike to the Railroad Tunnel on Sunday July 9th 2006 after 10:00 am Mass. Members from Mountain Bible Church have been invited to join us too.
We will leave from the Church parking lot. Hiking boots/shoes required. Also, long sleeved shirts, long pants & socks are recommended because of poison oak. Remember to bring sun screen, flashlights, lunch & water! Enjoy!

MARYKNOLL
We welcome Father Arthur Wille, a Maryknoll Missioner, who will speak at the Masses Saturday and Sunday, July 8-9, 2006 about his mission experience and ask for spiritual and financial help primarily through subscriptions to the Maryknoll Magazine.
A summary on Maryknoll follows:
Founded in 1911 as The Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, Maryknoll's job is to bring God's Word to foreign lands. Maryknollers share the gospel not in words alone, but in practical and concrete actions: by feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving shelter to the homeless, comforting the oppressed.
Maryknoll depends entirely upon friends for support. Each benefactor's name is honored as a sacred trust – never revealed, sold, or exchanged with any outside organization, for any purpose whatever. All gifts received are used solely in mission work, mission education, recruitment, training, and the care of ill and retired missioners.
Father Wille, a native of Watsonville, has spent over 40 years on mission in Tanzania. He has done primary evangelization and social economic work among the African people. He has guided and helped develop a group of African sisters to also become missionaries.

The Birth of John The Baptist (24 June)
Patience dispels clock time and reveals a new time, the time of salvation. It is not the time measured by the abstract, objective units of the clock, the watch, or the calendar, but rather the time lived from within and experienced as full time. It is this full time about which Scripture speaks. All the great events of the Gospels occur in the fullness of time. A literal translation from the Greek shows this clearly: When the time for Elizabeth had become full she bore her son John (Luke 1:57)…
It is this full time, pregnant with new life that can be found through the disciples of patience. As long as we are the slaves of the clock and the calendar, our time remains empty and nothing really happens. Thus, we miss the moment of grace and salvation. But when patience prevents us from running from the painful moment in the false hope of finding our treasure elsewhere, we can slowly begin to see that the fullness of time is already here and that salvation is already taking place.

CORPUS CHRIST
The Lord is the center of all things and yet in such a quiet, unobtrusive, elusive way. He lives with us, even physically, but not in the same physical way that other elements are present to us. The transcended physical presence is what characterizes the Eucharist. It is already the other world present in this one. In the celebration of the Eucharist we are given an enclave in our world of space and time. God in Christ is really here, and yet his physical presence is not characterized by the same limitations of space and time that we know.
Only those who already love the Lord and believe in His active, loving presence to us can see the Eucharist. But is that not true of every good relationship that we have? Friendship is like that, human love is like that. The bonds that unite us with those we love are invisible bonds. They become sivible only indirectly, only by what we do as a result of them. But the bonds themselves are invisible. The presence of friends to one another is very real; this presence is palpably physical, sustaining us in difficult or joyful moments, and yet invisible.
The greatest mystery of the Christian faith is that God came to us in the body, suffered with us in the body, rose in the body, and gave us His body as food. No religion takes the body as seriously as the Christian religion. The body is not seen as the enemy or as a prison of the spirit, but celebrated as the spirit's temple. Through Jesus' birth, life, death, and resurrection, the human body has become part of the life of God. By eating the body of Christ, our own fragile bodies are becoming intimately connected with the risen Christ and thus prepared to be lifted up with him into the divine life.
Jesus says, "I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world" (John 6:51).

Feast of the Holy Trinity
About twenty people sat in a large circle in the lovely fenced-in garden. I tried to explain the mystery of the Trinity by saying that all human relationship are reflections of the relationships within God. God is the Lover, the Beloved, and the Love that binds us in unity. God invites us to be part of that inner movement of love so that we can truly become sons and daughters of the Father, sisters and brothers of the Son, and spouses of the Holy Spirit. Thus, all our human relationships can be lived in God, and as witness to God's divine presence in our lives.
I am deeply convinced that most human suffering comes from broken relationship. Anger, jealousy, resentment, and feelings of rejection all find their source in conflict between people who yearn for unity, community, and a deep sense of belonging. By claiming the Holy Trinity as home for our relational lives, we claim the truth that God gives us what we most desire and offers us the grace to forgive each other for not being perfect in love.

At the park I recognized a young woman in a wheelchair. We had met five years earlier at a special school for the deaf and blind where she was a fifteen-year-old resident, and I was employed as a pastoral worker.
As I approached her I noticed that her health had rapidly deteriorated –not just her sight and hearing but her muscle movements as well. I made myself know to her by pressing sign language into the palm of her hand. To my delight, she remembered me. Her next
questiontook me aback: "How did you recognize me? Was it may face or my wheelchair?"

Pentecost
Season of the Spirit
Pentecost is a dramatic moment in the liturgical year when the Spirit of God, "aflame with his fire" fills the universe and tells of a new heaven and a new earth. Fifty days after Easter, the Spirit showers down on the apostles, signifying the bird of the Church and salvation for all in Jesus Christ. Whit Sunday inaugurates a season of joy, hope, and mission, a time when the Church comes "alive with a new breath."
Pentecost is the season of spiritual energy and political dynamism.
If people lived the spiritual life radically, it would affect everything they touched. Not only would it have an impact on personal growth and relationship, it would also influence economics, politics, and social structures. But, none the less, one didn't live the spiritual life with the deliberate intention to make political changes or induce social transformation.
Pentecost is the season when we are called to witness to the ends of the earth, no matter the political, cultural, or religious obstacles that might compromise our spiritual integrity. We might even be impelled to speak out in the name of truth and justice, knowing that derision or isolation might be our only rewards.
The Breath of life; when we speak about the Holy Spirit, we speak about the breath of God, breathing in us. The Greek word for "spirit" is pneuma, which means "breath." We are seldom aware of our breathing. It is so essential for life that we only think about it when something is wrong with it.
The Spirit of God is like our breath. God's spirit is more intimate to us than we are to ourselves. We might not often be aware of it, but without it we cannot live a "spiritual life." It is the Holy Spirit of God who prays in us, who offers us the gifts of love, forgiveness, kindness, goodness, gentleness, peace, and joy. It is the Holy Spirit who offers us the life that death cannot destroy. Let us always pray: "Come, Holy Spirit, come."

Our work to help women in crisis pregnancies is totally supported by individual donations so we truly thank God for each one of you. We are often the safety net for women who don't qualify for help elsewhere and sometimes the only difference between homelessness and finding shelter. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks (Hos 11:4).
But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me" (Lk 8:46).
Do: Spend time with your hands. Touch the texture of skin; notice the bumps, ridges, contours; feel the shape and size of your hands. Close your eyes and touch your hands again. Imagine God holding your hands.

Dear Lord, at the end of this Ascension Day I am filled with gratitude. I realize that on this day you concluded your stay among us and the great mystery of your incarnation became visible in its fullness. Your earthly life, which began with Gabriel's visit to your Mother, was concluded when you were lifted up in a cloud and take from the sight of your disciples. You, O Lord, Son of God, Son of Man, Emmanuel, Messiah, and Redeemer of all people, you indeed share with us all that is human and led our humanity to the right hand of your Heavenly Father. When you were no longer seen by your friends and had left them behind, you had fulfilled your divine mission. You taught us all we need to know; you did all that could be done; you gave us all that you had.
What would my life have been without knowing you? All my joys and pains are connected with your having come into this world.
Thank you, Lord, for your life on this earth and for calling me to tell the story of your life to all people. Amen.

Reflect: What does the goodness of God taste like to you? Prayer….
See/Observe. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary (Ps 63:2).
Jesus, looking at him, loved him (Mk10:21).
Do: Find something in nature. Look long at it. Befriend it. See of its details (size, shape, color, texture, etc.). Then, take a piece of paper and sketch it.
Reflect: What do you see of God's presence in your life? How do you look upon others with love? Prayer….

Living and Sharing the Good News
In recent years evangelization has once again become essential to our Christian faith. Evangelization means understanding the “good news,” letting it sink into every fiber of our being and sharing it with others.
Today’s first reading describes Peter’s meeting with the Roman centurion Cornelius. Instructed by a vision of God’s love for all persons, Peter proclaims the key insight about God that triggers the whole Christian mission: “God shows no partiality…whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.” Then the Holy Spirit comes down on the listeners so they can proclaim God’s greatness in various languages.
In the second reading, John encourages his people to love one another for “everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.” John draws no definite line here between believer and unbeliever. Everyone who loves is of God because where love is, there is God.
The gospel deepens our understanding of love. Jesus invites us to “remain in my love” by keeping his commandment to love one another. Loving God and our neighbor is the basis of evangelization. Jesus calls us and appoints us to go out and “bear fruit.” In loving concern we go out to others so that they, too, will benefit from this good news.

The Heart of the Seed
A Creed for the Sowing of Seeds
"A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know." Mark 4:26-28
I believe that this one of the earth's finest moments, that the sun lifting yellows and greens into life of tiny poplar leaves is much like God's own Spirit of love lifting life into me.
I believe that the Word of God has many times been planted in my life, often because of another who receive the seed in ready soil, brought forth a harvest, and shared that goodness with me.
I believe that the call to be a sower of the word is a privilege and a blessing, that no one can ever earn the right or claim the duty, that it is a gift freely given and a ministry to be constantly celebrated in gratitude.
I believe that great things can come forth from even the tiniest seed planted in love and cared for tenderly in the heart of another.
I believe that usually only God knows what sprouting and greening will come from the
Word planted through my ministry. I am content in knowing that I have tried, with the sower's grace, to seed that Word in faith and with joy.I believe that even the most insignificant aspects of life can be the seed of God's gifting, that deeper faith can root and mature in very ordinary soil.
I believe that my life will always know its season of hope, that I will find a flower after every finality of ice and snow, that I will find green, growing things after every harsh, barren reign of winter's rage.
And most of all…
I believe in the Sower of all seeds, in the God of Spring time, in the Giver of all good and growing things, my Lord and my God!

God's Writing on Our Hearts
As a child I knew God. I met God at the tennis court. Nose pressed against the chain link fence, I watched enthralled as fully habited Sister played tennis. Through their joyful play, these nuns taught me that God likes to have fun.
I also learned that God has a great sense of humor. God enjoyed making wind so that the habits billowed upwards and outwards. I learned that God liked me. These Sisters always took time from their game and smiled and waved at me. They even knew me by name! (Maybe God knows me too!)
John imagines Jesus as a shepherd, calling us to follow him. This call is our vocation. I learned the true meaning of vocation on a retreat when the director told us that at the very beginning of time God wrote our vocation on our heart. What we need is help to discover the writing on our hearts, then to learn to read this writing and finally to celebrate it so that we can truly live according to God's desire for us.
The tennis court sisters brought joy and laughter into my life because they had made the journey inward and read the writing on their hearts. Living their lives with passion, they brought me to a deeper understanding of God. We can do this…one for another. Are you ready to listen to the shepherd's voice and discover the writing on your heart?

The Hidden Christ
The ragged stranger looked at me. He didn't have to say anything. The plea in his eyes was enough. Was I going to help or not? Startled out of my routine, terrified at the thought of just where this encounter may lead me, I hesitated. What do I do?
I could ignore his plea. The guilt would surely just be momentary. The comfortable complacency of the everyday would soon settle back in around me. After all, I am not the one whom Peter talks about in the first reading rejecting the Holy and Righteous One, am I? I really don't have to feel guilty. It certainly isn't as if I had killed someone, is it?
Experience has taught me that the more I give of myself, the more I will receive. Livid faith actively grows. Why am I so disbelieving and still wondering how to act? What do I have to fear?
I know that Jesus appears to us every day in the people around us. Why is it so difficult to respond to his outstretched hand? Startled and terrified at his appearance among them, the disciples didn't know what to do either. But Jesus said to them, "peace be with you." He is still here among us offering forgiveness for our sins and urging us to be his witnesses proclaiming through our deeds his name to all nations.

Dear Brother and Sisters
Monday May 1St will be a national day of action in support of just immigration reform. In our own diocese, coordinated activities in Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties will culminate in a march scheduled to take place in Salinas at 4:00 p.m. I am asking all the people of the Diocese to make Monday May 1st a day of prayer for comprehensive immigration reform.
Let us join together so that the day will come soon when our country will put into place policies to address the root causes of migration, such as global poverty; reform our legal immigration system, including an earned legalization program, a temporary worked program with appropriate worker protections, and reductions in waiting times in family-based immigration categories; and restoration of due process for immigrants…
In his annual Message on World Migration Day in 1966, Pope John Paul II detailed the very reasons why we support comprehensive immigration reform when he said, "In the Church no one is a stranger, and the Church is not foreign to anyone, anywhere. As a sacrament of unity and thus a sign and binding force for the whole human race, the Church is the place where illegal immigrants are also recognized and accepted as brothers and sisters. It is the task of the various Dioceses actively to ensure that these people, who are obliged to live outside the safety net of civil society, may find a sense of brotherhood in the Christian community."

A SIGN OF LOVE
The resurrection of Jesus was a hidden event. Jesus didn't rise from the grave to baffle his opponents, to make a victory statement, or to prove to those who crucified him that he was right after all. Jesus rose as a sign to those who loved him and followed him that God's divine love is stronger than death. To the women and men who committed themselves to him, he revealed that his mission had been fulfilled. To those who shared in his ministry, he gave the sacred task to call people into the new life within him. The world didn't take notice. Only those whom he called by name, with whom he broke bread and to whom he spoke words of peace, were aware of what happened. Still, it was this hidden event that freed humanity from the shackles of death

The Journey from Doubt to Faith
Strong emotions run through today's gospel reading. The disciples experience fear, amazement and joy when Jesus appears. Thomas feels heart-wrenching disappointment, longing and doubt- and then astonished humble gratitude.
We can relate to the story of Thomas. Who among us has not at some time felt deep pangs of regret at missing out on seeing someone we deeply loved or on some significant occasion?
Thomas responds testily when the other disciples told him their wondrous experience of Jesus' visit. We sense the anguish in Thomas's doubting complaint that he would need sure proof before believing their too-good-to-be-true news. Who expected that Jesus would return the next week to reassure Thomas in the very concrete ways he asked?
When we suffer disappointment and doubt, we can draw reassurance from this beautiful account. God is with us and will hear and respond to our doubt-filled cries. But there is a further insight to be gleaned from this story.
When we are sad, it may be wise not to give up on those places and the company of those people where and with whom we have met God in the past. God is always calling us together, in little and larger groups, with others who are walking the same path of faith, doubt and renewed faith that characterizes our human journey. Beth Porter

his book "Adventures in Two Worlds." I have told you of Olwen Davies, the middle-aged district nurse who for more
than twenty years, with fortitude and patience, calmness and cheerfulness, which
above all seemed the keynote of her character, was so poorly rewarded, it
worried me. Although she was much beloved by the people, her salary was most
inadequate. And late one night after a particularly strenuous case, I ventured a
protest to her as we drank a cup of tea together. "Nurse," I said, "Why don't
you make them pay you more? It's ridiculous that you should work for so little."
She raises her eyebrows slightly. But, she smiled, "I have enough to get along."
"No, really," I persisted, "you ought to have an extra pound a week at least.
God knows you're worth it." There was a pause. Her smile remained, but her gaze
held a gravity, an intensity which startled me. "Doctor." She said, "If God
knows I'm worth it, that's all that matters to me." Are we content to do our work in silence, knowing that God knows our efforts,

Park, a Catalina Island package and more! But you must register NOW! For information, call Theresa Allion at 373-4345. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT April 2, 2006 Sacrificing Our Self-Interest In today's gospel, Jesus states that fostering life means denying our own
self-interests even to the point of losing our own life. Fulfilling this
Christian task, last year the Canadian Catholic Organization of Development and
Peace presented hundreds of thousands of signatures to the World Water forum in
Mexico declaring that water is a human right and that life comes before profits
resulting from privatizing water resources. We are now more aware of the difficult conditions for loans often imposed on
developing nations by organizations like the World Bank and the International
Monetary Fund. The requirement that these nations privatize their water
resources too often means clean water remains out of the reach of the poor. We have also learned that there are many ways of funding and managing water
infrastructure other than inviting multinationals to run the show. The public
water system in Porto Alegre, Brazil, for instance, is both democratically-run
and profitable. Most importantly, water rates for the poor are affordable. Elsewhere in the Gospel of John, Jesus refers to himself as the living water
that springs up to give abundant life to all. Water is essential for all life.
So when clean and affordable water is denied to anyone, Christians, as Jesus

immigration has caused in our state and our nation. Although it is apparent that
our immigration policy need reform… In California, immigrants live among us… they are our neighbors We recall Christ teaching parable of the Good Samaritan which he offered in
response to the question: "And who is my neighbor? In light of the Gospel, we call for an answer that is humane, realistic and
responsible while also serving our nation's economic and security needs.
Specifically we call for: Reform that includes earned legalization for the undocumented and their
families, a temporary worker program, and timely family reunification policies;
Restoration of due process protections for immigrants; Policy directions that
address the root causes –so that migrants can remain in their home countries and
support themselves and their families; and Reform that does not include
sanctions for those who provide humanitarian aid for the undocumented. FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT March 26, 2006 Standing in God's Light I've never been one for sunbathing. I don't like what my body looks like in a
bathing suit, and the heat gets to me. I prefer to enjoy a summer day in the
shade, fully dressed. What's more, when I'm feeling down. I am tempted to crawl
under the covers, curl up and read a book, with a flashlight. The light has come into the world, but there are times when I prefer the
darkness. There are many escape routes from the light. Just letting God's love wash
over me can be hard. Staying in the light means facing the parts of my world
that I don't like. The light shows up the false image that I often present to
the world, an image I would like to believe myself. The light shines into my
thoughts, and I have to show them to God. Standing in God's light means trusting that God didn't come to condemn me,
but to save me. When we stand before God as a people, we are the same. We
struggle to avoid God's piercing gaze, try desperately to deserve God's love, or
prove that others don't. Today let us allow God's light to shine through our defenses and expose our
weakness and divisions. Let us not mentally crawl away from God's unconditional
love, but bask in it, trust it. Then we'll find that there's no stopping it.

Total surrender consists in giving ourselves completely to God, because God has given Himself to us. Day of ABSTINENCE in the CHURCH!
Jesus said to the people of his time, "If you want to be my disciples, take up your cross and come follow me."
…Today in young people of the world, Jesus lives his passion, in the suffering, in the hungry, the handicapped young people- in that child who eats a piece of bread crumb by crumb, because when that piece of bread is finished, there will be no more and hunger will come again.
That is a Station of the Cross.
Are you there with that child?
And those thousands who die not only for a piece of bread, but for a little bit of love, of recognition. That is a Station of the Cross. Are you there?
And young people, when they fall, as Jesus fell again and again for us, are we there as Simon Cyrene to pick them up, to pick up the Cross?
The people in the parks, the alcoholics, the homeless, they are looking at you. Do not be those who look and do not see.
Look and see.
We can begin the Station of the Cross step by step with joy. Jesus made himself the Bread of Life for us.
We have Jesus in the Bread of Life to give us the strength.

The Diocese does it again! The Observer Essay Contest is here once again. There are three levels: 7th and 8th grade contest is sponsored by Pat's Monograms and Uniforms; and the 5th and 6th grade contest is sponsored by Jim Miller Cabrillo College Fund. Each level has three cash prizes: First -$300.00, Second -$200.00, Third -$100.00. The subject for the essays is "Temptations of the Christian Youth". Entrants will title their own essays and consist of between 200 and 250 words. Essays must be received by April 10, 2006 and winners will be announced in the May issue of the Observer.

Our Lord on the Cross possessed nothing… He was on the Cross that was given by Pilate. The nails and the crown were given by the soldiers. He was naked and when He dies, Cross, nails and crown were taken away from Him. He chose poverty because He knew in His infinite knowledge and wisdom that it is the real means of possessing God, of conquering His heart, of bringing His love down to this earth.
Silence. Be alone with Him in your heart. Our Lady was silent, even at the Cross.

A NEW HEART
When our physical heart no longer functions as it should, it becomes urgent that we have it repaired. Occasionally, hearts wear out and can no longer be fixed, and then they must be replaced. Many of us know someone in need of heart replacement. The old heart is exhausted, congested, suffering. These people find themselves unable to do the simplest tasks. What they once took for granted has been wrenched from daily life.
And where does one go to get a new heart? Money can't buy it. Those you love can't give it to you. Doctors have yet to discover a one-heart-fits-all. Artists can't create one. All the self-help books in the world can't make a new one.
The only hope for a new heart is the complete generosity of a stranger willing to be a heart donor.
As we second week of Lenten season we are all in need of new heart – not the physical one we carry in our body, but rather the spiritual heart that has not been given totally to God. We need to replace the heart that doesn't trust in God's plan and doesn't want to change a thing about the way we go about our daily lives.

LENT: SEASON OF REPENTANCE
Fasting for the Right Reasons
Thomas Merton reminds us that our Lent fasting cannot be just an external action but must be motivated by spiritual reasons in order to be effective for our spiritual growth.
Such exercises as fasting cannot have their proper effect unless our motives for practicing them spring from personal meditation.
We have to think what we are doing, and the reasons for our action must spring from the depths of our freedom and be enlivened by the transforming power of Christian love. Otherwise, our self-imposed sacrifices are likely to be pretenses, symbolic gestures without real interior meaning.
Sacrifices made in this formalistic spirit tend to be mere acts of external routine performed in order to exorcise interior anxiety and not for the sake of love.
In that case, however, our attention will tend to fix itself upon the insignificant suffering which we have piously elected to undergo, and to exaggerate it in one way or the other, either to make it seem unbearable or else to make it seem more heroic than it actually is.
Sacrifices made in this fashion would be better left unmade. It would be more sincere as well as more religious to eat a full dinner in a spirit of gratitude than to make some picayune sacrifice of part of it, with the feeling that one is suffering martyrdom.

The Church as the body of Christ, as Christ living in the world, has a larger mission than to support, nurture, and guide its own members. It is also called to be a witness to the love of God made visible in Jesus. Part of the essence of being the Church is being a living witness for Christ in the world.

This thirst for God comes first as people begin to experience deeper personal prayer. People long for God to speak to them. Still many people only "talk" when they pray to God. However, the lesson should be to listen to God in times of silence, in both our personal prayer and at the liturgy.

"Jesus, at the sight of the crowds, was moved with pity" (Mt 9:36)
Lent is a privileged time of interior pilgrimage towards Him Who is the fount of mercy. It is a pilgrimage in which He Himself accompanies us through the desert of our poverty, sustaining us on our way towards the intense joy of Easter. Even in the "valley of darkness", while the tempter prompts us to despair or to place a vain hope in the work of our own hands, God is there to guard us and sustain us. Yes, even today the Lord hears the cry of the multitudes longing for joy, peace, and love. As in every age, they feel abandoned. Yet, even in the desolation of misery, loneliness, violence and hunger that indiscriminately afflict children, adults, and the elderly, God does not allow darkness to prevail; "a divine limit imposed upon evil", namely mercy. "Jesus, at the sight of the crowds, was moved with pity".
The response to people's material and social needs from the fulfillment of the profound desires of the hearts. This has to be emphasized all the more in today's rapidly changing word, in which our responsibility towards the poor emerges with ever greater clarity and urgency; the scandal of underdevelopment as an outrage against humanity.
The Church denounced "the lack of material necessities for those who are without the minimum essential for life, the moral deficiencies of those who are mutilated by selfishness" and "oppressive social structures of workers or to unjust transactions."
As the antidote to such evil, "increased esteem for the dignity of others, the turning towards the spirit of poverty, cooperation for the common good, the will and desire for peace", and also "the acknowledgement by man of supreme values, and of God, their source and their finality". The faith, a gift of God accepted by the good will of man, and unity in the love of Christ.
The Church offers to the development of mankind and peoples does not consist merely in material means or technical solutions. Rather, it involves the proclamation of the truth of Christ; it means the promotion of the culture that truly responds to all the questions of humanity.
In the face of the terrible challenger of poverty afflicting so much of the world's population, indifference and self-centered isolation stand in stark contrast to the "gaze" of Christ. Fasting and almsgiving, which, together with prayer, the Church proposes in a special way during the Lenten Season, are suitable means for us to become conformed to this "gaze".
Lent puts before us, pointing towards the victory of Christ over every evil that oppresses us. In turning to the Divine Master, in being converted to Hi,, in experiencing His mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we will discover a "gaze" that searches us profoundly and gives new life to the crowds and each one of us. It restores trust to those who do not succumb to skepticism, opening up before them the perspective of the eternal beatitude.

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

Braking new ground is risky. Roads through the wilderness and paths in the wild are scary. But such is the stuff of chance and growth; letting go of what was before—the status quo, the secure—and moving forward in hope.
In Isaiah, God calls us to this newness of the unknown. "See, I am doing something new!" But the new is for those who see with the eyes of the heart, the eyes of faith. "Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?"
Letting go our incompleteness of the past is about healing and forgiveness.
"Heal me through I have sinned against you" (Psalm 41). Are we up to the challenge? God's assurance of beings with us on this journey to wholeness is clear.
"However many are the promises of God, their Yes is in him." (2 Cor 1:20)
In today's gospel, in our fear of the unknown and paralysis of insecurity, we experience ourselves being lowered through the roof to Jesus' healing of love and compassion. We hear the words, "Your sins are forgiven…I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home."
Rise, pick up, and go home. When we accept forgiveness, our paralysis is healed. We are able to get up, pick up and come home in grace and gratitude to the newness of who we are. If we are willing to risk the change of heart, forgiveness makes us whole again in body and spirit.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME February 12, 2006 Healing What Really Ails Us In the biblical world, uncleanness was
not just about dirt but even more about right relationships. When things or
people were out of place, they were "unclean" until the wrongness was
righted. Since germs were unknown, diseases like leprosy were considered to
result from sin and the work of the devil. As a result, people avoided those
who were sick lest they be contaminated both physically and spiritually. Jesus heals both the leper and his
relationship with society. Jesus sends him to the priest, in keeping with the
Jewish law, so that the priest might recognize that the man has been healed and
therefore can enter into society once more. But instead, the man immediately
begins to tell everyone he meets about what Jesus has done for him. Even
without the priest's formal recognition, it is obvious to all that the man in
no longer sick. Note, however, that he is able to
interact with others only because of what Jesus has done for him. This
powerfully illustrates Jesus' purpose on the earth. He healed the sick not just
so that they would be well but so that they would no longer be alone and
isolated from others. The man's response achieves that goal:
not only is he now able to talk with others, but he does so enthusiastically in

year. I am here alone. After the long, tiring night on the train, I arrived at
"the little convent" of the Sister of the Immaculate Conception at
7:30 a.m. I slept, went to the grotto where Mary appeared to Bernadette,
celebrated the Eucharist of the Epiphany in the basilica, and prayed. Why am I here? To give my life to Jesus.
To make Jesus the very center of my existence. But how is this to come about?
Mary is here to show me, Mary is here to be my gentle counselor, to take me by
the hand and let me enter into full communion with her son. I am afraid, but Mary is here and tells
me to trust. I realize that I can make Jesus the heart of my heart only when I
ask Mary to show me how. She is the mother of Jesus. In her, God interrupted
history and started to make everything new. And so I too have to put myself
under her protection… I simply want to be very close to her who spoke to
Bernadette in the grotto. I trust that she will open my heart for a new encounter

are very happy to help you! FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 5, 2006 Giving Ourselves to God Children die of cancer and AIDS, of hunger and in war. Criminals thrive in
"successful" careers and dictators worldwide can go unpunished. Yes, bad things
happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. There's no doubt that Job's lament is justified. But the extent of suffering
(or prosperity for that matter) is no adequate measure of our good or evil
nature or of God's love. In fact, Paul stresses that God's love is there for
anyone willing to be radically transformed in Christ. Paul is so convinced of
this good news that he puts his personal freedom at the service of this shocking
proclamation. And Mark's Jesus clearly does not want idolatrous admiration from
a distance, but a transformed heart. Jesus knows human fickleness all too well:
an idolized miracle worker today, the cross tomorrow. God in a black and white box, a world with insiders and outsiders, and a
miracle worker to adore-the things come easy to us. But today's readings trip up
such inadequate understandings. And that is good news, for God isn't anything
like idolatrous creatures and us limited. Job freely and stubbornly threw his lament to a silent yet present God. Paul
gave his freedom to the proclamation of the gospel. Jesus gave himself for
others. Will we offer our lives in the same way, in both suffering and

and parents, frequently use their authority to impose their wishes on citizens,
employees and children. This king of authority demands action through threats
and coercion, and control of others through rules and laws. The authority we read of today in the scriptures empowers. God promises to
put His words into the mouth of a prophet, who shall speak what God wants. God's
promise bestows authority. In the gospel, we see how Jesus freely accepts God's authority and lives it
through his loving words and actions. In the synagogue, the disciples recognize
that Jesus' words are different from the scribes, who preached of rule and law. The disciples and the unclean spirit recognize this authority. When Jesus
commands the unclean spirit to leave, it obeys. The people recognize his
life-giving authority and they astonished. In love, through the expulsion of the
evil, Jesus heals the man. As Christians we, too, are called to exude this loving, life-giving
authority. Today, through faith, sacramental participation and action, we are
enlivened to speak of and fulfill, with authority, God's love and care in our

strike you. Let the word itself become your prayer; send back to God the word he
has addressed to you. Then, for a few moments, remain in silence. Adore the God
who has spoken to you. Ask him to give you hunger for the "daily bread (Luke
11:4) you will receive at Mass. Go to church with hunger and desire; you will
not be sent away empty (cf. Luke 1:53) for God will fill you with good things. THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME January 22, 2006 A Leap of Faith! Many of our decisions are leaps of faith. We can't be sure that moving away,
starting a relationship, having a child or changing careers will pan out in the
long run. But when it feels right, we do it anyway. Vatican Council II was such a leap of faith. One of the currents of fresh air
to blow through the newly opened windows of the Church was ecumenism- the desire
to build bridges to other religious traditions, find common ground and encourage
unity. During this coming Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, all Christians are
invited to set aside their differences in order to celebrate their common faith
in Jesus Christ. Across our nation and around the world, persons are gathering
in each other's churches to pray and worship together this week, not knowing
exactly where their actions will lead, but having faith that their gathering is
important. Have faith. In today's readings we hear this invitation. The Ninevites
believe and repent. Paul asks the Corinthians to look beyond this world. And
Jesus invites some ordinary fishermen to abandon all that is familiar. Two
thousand years later, these messages are still urgent. Can we also leave our
nets- and our fear and our differences- and together follow Jesus? It's a leap

you keep clutching your old ways of life with one hand while with the other you
beg people to help you change? Conversion is certainly not something you can bring about your-self. It is
not a question of willpower. You have to trust the inner voice that shows the
way. You know that inner voice. You turn to it often. But after you have heard
with clarity what you are asked to do, you start raising questions, fabricating
objections, and seeking everyone else's opinion. Thus you become entangled in
countless often-contradictory thoughts, feelings, and ideas and lose touch with
the God in you. And you end up dependent on all the people you have gather

life of freedom and joy. SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME January 15, 2006 A Homecoming Invitation "Homecoming" is a word that creates warm feelings of a cherished place and
time. A visit to parents brings forth images and stories spanning decades. Today's gospel gives us an image of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.
One must "come and see" and "stay." Discipleship is not intellectual assent to doctrine, but a complete giving of
self. Just as Jesus "stays" with God and God "stay" with Jesus, a disciple must
enter a new communion of body, mind and spirit. This is not a temporary visit; this is a homecoming. We came from God and
return to God when we "come and see" and "stay with Jesus." Like Andrew and Samuel, we must be alert to the many ways God invites us to
"stay," to deepen a relationship that enables us to be missionaries to the world

God's Mystery Is for Everyone
The Christmas story comes to its fullness today in the Epiphany, the manifestation of the mystery of God made human to all of humanity.
Like the magi, we are drawn to the star of Bethlehem. We follow the light of the star and find truth- God is with us in the person of Jesus Christ. We discover the King of kings, not in opulence, but lying in a manger midst shreds of cloth. We are amazed at the mystery of God in human form. We feel peace- drawn to the warmth of Mary and the devotion and protection of Joseph.
There is more. Upon hearing of the journey of the magi, King Herod is filled with fear. He is afraid of the messiah and will try to keep his power at any cost.
Today we face modern day Herod's whose motives are power and domination and not homage to the Christ within us. Our hope for the future lies in the Christ child, who hides himself still with us and brings us peace!

EPIPHANY Season of Revelation
The word "epiphany' comes from the Greek epiphaneia or theophaneis, meaning "appearance" or "manifestation." After the festivities of Christmas, it is the time of the Christian year when we wonder at the revelation of God to the world in Jesus Christ. The Feast of the Epiphany on January 8 symbolizes the fact that "the man born to be king" will rule not by force but by love, reigning not from a throne but from a cross. Gold for a king, frankincense for a priest, myrrh for the one who was to die: the gifts of the wise men foretell that he will be the true king, perfect high priest and supreme savior.
Jesus is the revelation of God's unending, unconditional love for us human beings. Everything that Jesus has done, said and undergone is meant to show us that the love we most long for is given to us by God, not because we've deserved it, but because God is a God of love.
If we had a firm faith in God's unconditional love for us, it would no longer be necessary to be always on the lookout for ways of being admired by people, and we would need, even less, to obtain from people by force what God desires to give us so abundantly. Follow Your Heart!
OCTAVE OF CHRISTMAS: THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD

Surrounded by Mystery
Today’s feast, which replaced the circumcision of Jesus, seems to shift the focus from Christ to Mary. The circumcision emphasized the humanity of the child Jesus and his incorporation into the Jewish covenant made with Abraham.
But the feast of Mary the Mother of God also has Christ as its focus. It reminds us that Mary gave birth to a child who is not only a human baby visited by the shepherds and the Magi but also God’s eternal Word of revelation to humanity.
This feast began in controversy when in the year 428 Nestorius, the Bishop of Constantinople, claimed that Mary was mother only of the human baby and thus should never be called Mother of God, who is eternal and has no mother.
In 431, the ecumenical Council of Ephesus decreed that since the baby was the eternal Son of God, thus the baby that was born of Mary was also God. So she was rightly called Mother of God.
Today then, a week after Christmas, we reflect on the identity of the child whose birth we celebrate. A human baby, the child of the family of Abraham, circumcised on this day, who is also the Word made flesh, the Lord of all creation, God made human for our salvation, judge of all the ages, prince of peace. It is a sublime feast for a sublime mystery.

NEW YEAR 2006
A new beginning! We must learn to live each day, each hour, yes, each minute as a new beginning, as a unique opportunity to make everything new. Imagine that we could live each moment as a moment pregnant with new life. Imagine that we could live each day as a day full of promises. Imagine that we could walk through the mew year always listening to a voice saying to us: "I have a gift for you and can’t wait for you to see it!" Imagine.
Is it possible that our imagination cam lead us to the truth of our lives? Yes, it can! The problem is that we allow our past, which becomes longer and longer each year, to say to us: "You know it all; you have seen it all, be realistic; the future will be just another repeat the past. Try to survive it as best you can."
We must open our minds and heart to the voice that resounds through the valleys and hills of our life saying: "Let me show you where I live among my people. My name is ‘God-with-you.’ I will wipe away all the tears from your eyes; there will be no more death, and no more mourning or sadness. The world of the past has gone."(Revelation 21:2-5)
May the joys of this Christmas Season be with you and your family throughout the New Year, and may all your dreams come true. Expect Miracles!
