A woman, a divorcee, was explaining to her daughter why she never remarried. “The men I know will bring too much heavy baggage to the marriage and I simply don’t want to put up with it.”

The daughter listened sympathetically to her mother’s explanation. Then she took her mother’s hand in hers and said as lovingly as she could, “But, Mom, you’re not exactly carry-on yourself.”

Yes, indeed, we do have high standards – for other people.

We are quick to assess people purely by our own measure of what is right and good; we determine their worth by their function or their usefulness in helping us accomplish our own goals and agendas; we quickly size up people by our own inaccurate and sometimes bigoted stereotypes; we become so obsessed with numbers and demographics that we forget that we are dealing with flesh-and-blood human beings with hopes and beliefs and feelings.

In honoring the goodness and love of the Canaanite mother for her sick child – who, as a Canaanite, represented one of Israel’s most despised enemies – Christ illuminates our vision, enabling us to see one another as God sees us.

The call to discipleship demands that we look beyond labels and stereotypes to realize that every one of us is a child of God, brothers and sisters all.

KIDS CLUB

Another ‘thank you’ to all who donated, prayed, or staffer this outreach to our local elementary school this past year. We want to appeal to all our members to consider helping in this creative way to connect with many young families outside of our church.

This coming year, we are upgrading our curriculum, doing more training in classroom management and adding room space over at the Community Center. We think we can improve a lot on our efforts from last year by doing this. Pray also for the workers who will come from Mountain Bible Church as we partner with them for his.

Why a New Translation

“Why should there be a translation at all?” some of the faithful may wonder. Well, the new Order of Mass – not the so-called “Latin Mass,” more properly named the Tridentine Rite Mass, which was said in all countries before the Second Vatican Council recommended the use of the vernacular and revised the structure and the language of the Mass – is written in Latin, as are all the prayers used at Mass is said. These texts must be translated, then, from the original Latin into English and all the other vernacular languages of the world. Thus, when the priest says, “The Lord be with you,” the response in the vernacular languages has simply translated the Latin “Et cum spiritu tuo,” “And with your spirit,” so that in Sweden the response is just that, “Och med din ande,” as it is in German, “Und mit deinem Geist,” as it is in Italian, “E con il tuo spirit.” The new translation in English, then, is meant to bring our prayers closer not only to the original Latin, bet to what our brothers and sisters throughout the world have long been saying in their languages.

Universality and Catholicity

The word “catholic” occurs for the first time as a description of the Church in the letter of Saint Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrneans, hence, at the beginning of the second century: “Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church”. The local Church gathers under the supervision of the bishop; wherever he is, there is Church. The “bishop” of the universal Church is Jesus Christ: wherever Christ is, there is the Church, the Catholic Church. Ignatius seems to assume that his readers are already familiar with the word “catholic” as a description for the universal Church, which in all the local Churches is still only one. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that in Antioch the word “Christian” was first coined for the disciples of Jesus Christ (Acts 11:26). From the matter-of-course use of the title “Catholic” by the martyr-bishop of this city, one could conclude that perhaps this word, also, was first developed there as an expression for the universal Church.

Although the text offer no further explanation of the word “catholic”, two conceptual elements are clearly discernible; in them are immediately apparent the essential traits that have been viewed throughout subsequent history also as the authentic meaning of catholicity. These two elements are membership in Christ and universality. The two go together. Only Christ can hold together and unify the whole; when we speak of Christ, we must, of course, always see the Trinitarian mystery in the background; he comes from the Father, and he works at present in all of history through the Holy Spirit, who bears witness to Christ and guides believers into all the truth (John 15:26; 16:13). Universality is God’s concern; Christ holds it all together, because he is the Son. The Christocentric emphasis is, as such, always a Trinitarian emphasis. The reference to Christ, then, contains the Church’s claim to extend to the “ends of the earth” and to hand the people over to the true king of the world as an inheritance (Psalm 2:8; Mat 28:19; Acts 1:8).

In Today’s second reading, Saint Paul bids us to take comfort in knowing that when God invites us to pray to him, he knows our true needs, even if we do not. The Holy Spirit intercedes and prays for us even if we can’t come up with appropriate words; even when we don’t have a clue what to ask for.

We are not left alone.

Good stewards know that prayer is an important part of living a life in Christ. The important thing is to make space for God. Do we let God into our hearts? Do we make room for the Holy Spirit to pray within us?

The Roman Missal, Third Edition

“And with your spirit”

The first change concerns the response to the priest’s greeting “The Lord be with you.” The faithful will begin to respond

“And with your spirit”

Instead of the now customary “And also with you.” “The Lord (be) with you” (Dominus vobiscum) is a powerful biblical greeting, used in both Old and New Testaments, such as an angel or an apostle, meet someone to whom he was sent. Most famously, these are the words with which the angel greets Mary (Luke 1:28).

The word “spirit” refers to pneuma, a key term in the Greek New Testament. Its meaning ranges from the person of the Holy Spirit, to his manifold gifts within us, to the highest part of our own souls. Our “spirit” is like our inner “radio antenna,” the very “top” of our selves, through which the Holy Spirit enters us so that our Spirit-filled spirit may in turn transform our souls and our bodies.

Thus when we return the priest’s greeting by saying “And with your spirit,” we state that the Lord is present to his spirit, and we also wish that the Lord is present to his spirit, and we also wish that the Lord may be even more intensely present in him so as to rekindle in him the spirit of courage, love, and self-control, the chief virtues of the minister according to Paul (2 Tm 1:7). The greeting, then, is an acknowledgement of the Lord Jesus’ presence in the congregation and the minister, and a wish that his presence may fill us with his Spirit and transform us unto his image and likeness.

Looking Ahead to the New Roman Missal

On November 27, 2011, the words we use in the MASS will change. The 2001 Vatican document Liturgiam Authenticam (“On the Use of Vernacular Languages in the Publication of the Books of the Roman Liturgy”) outlined new rules and principles versions of the Roman Missal match the original Latin texts more closely (or literally). Since then the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has been working and approve the new English translation of the Roman Missal (Sacramentary).

The new translations affect the Order of Mass, including both the presider’s and people’s parts (responses).

Lectionaries reading, including responsorial psalms, are not affected at this time.

“The changes can be an occasion for a reawakening of the liturgical life of the Church, a new beginning.”

The people of Jesus’ “native place” begin to measure him based on their own inadequate preconceptions and presuppositions. Because they are “sated with contempt,” they rule out the possibility of experiencing the “mighty deeds” of the Lord.

How much better are those who, like Saint Paul, approach reality from the perspective of the thorn in their flesh, even boasting gladly of their weakness.

For “power is made perfect in weakness.” The embrace of our weakness quells the rebellion of original sin and opens us to the wonder of the Prophet among us.

God’s grace is sufficient for us.

The Mass of all ages

As early as the second century we have the witness of St. Justin Martyr for the basic lines of the order of the Eucharistic celebration… St Justin wrote to the pagan emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161) around the year 155, explaining what Christians did:

On the day we call the day of the sun, all who dwell in the city or country gather in the same place.

The memoirs of the apostles and the weiting of the prophets are read, as much as time permits.

When the reader has finished, he who presides over those gathered admonishes and challenges them to imitate these beautiful things.

Then we all rise together and offer prayers for ourselves… and for all others, wherever they may be, so that we may be found righteous by our life and actions, and faithful to the commandments, so as to obtain eternal salvation.

When the prayers are concluded we exchange the kiss.

Then someone brings bread and a cup of water and wine mixed together to him who presides over the brethren.

He takes them and offers praise and glory to the Father of the universe, through the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and for a considerable time he gives thanks (in Greek: eucharistian) that we have been judged worthy of these gifts.

When he has concluded the prayers and thanksgivings, all present give voice to an acclamation by saying” ‘Amen.’

When he who presides has given thanks and the people have responded, those whom we call deacon give to those present the “eucharisted” bread, wine and water and take them to those who are absent.”

Very little is known about the early life of Peter, except that he was a Galilean fisherman, probably born in the village of Bethsaida or Capernaum and that his original name was Simon.

At the start of Christ’s ministry, He was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, when He called to Peter and his brother Andrew, “Come, and I will make you fishers of men.” They dropped their nets and followed Him.

The story of St. Peter is truly the story of the human family. It’s about failing and trying again; about faith overcoming fear; and about knowing that being a leader doesn’t require perfection.

Christ, we can conquer our fears and become leaders, too.

Next time a friend, colleague or family member disappoints you with a lack support, try forgiveness before anger.

When you know you’ve made a mistake, reflect on why you made the choices you did—was it fear, lack of understanding, laziness—and resolve to do better next time.

The Profession of the Christian Faith

The Creeds

Whoever says “I believe” says “I pledge myself to what we believe.” Communion in faith needs a common language of faith, normative for all uniting all in the same confession of faith.

From the beginning, the apostolic Church expressed and handed on her faith in brief formulae for all. But already early on, the Church also wanted to gather the essential elements of its faith into organic and articulated summaries intended especially for candidates for Baptism:

This synthesis of faith was not made to accord with human opinions, but rather what was of the greatest importance was gathered from all the Scriptures, to present the one teaching of faith in its entirety. And just as the mustard seed contains a great number of branches in a tiny grain, so too this summary of faith encompassed in a few words the whole knowledge of the true religion contained in the Old and New Testaments.

Such synthesis are called “professions of faith” since they summarize the faith that Christians profess. They are called “creeds” on account of what is usually their fist word in Latin: credo (“I believe”). They are also called “symbols of faith.”

The fist “profession of faith” is made during Baptism. The symbol of faith is first and foremost the baptismal creed. Since Baptism is given “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19), the truths of faith professed during Baptism are articulated in terms of their reference to the three persons of the Holy Spirit.

Through the centuries many professions or symbols of faith have been articulated in response to the needs of the different eras: the creeds of the different apostolic and ancient Churches, e.g., the Quicumque, also called the Athanasian Creed; the professions of faith of certain Councils, such as Toledo, Lateran, Lyons, Trent, or the symbols of certain popes, e.g., the Fides Damasi of the Credo of the People of God of Paul VI (1968).

Among all the creeds, two occupy a special place in the Church’s life.

The Apostles’ Creed is so called because it is rightly considered to be a faithful summary of the apostles’ faith…

The Niceno-Constantinolitan or Nicene Creed draws its great authority from the fact that it stems from the first two ecumenical Councils (in 325 and 381). It remains common to all the great Churches of both East and West to this day.

This Creed is the spiritual seal, our hearts’ meditation and en ever-present guardian; it is, unquestionably, the treasure of our soul.

The sending of the Holy Spirit

When the Lord told his disciples to go and teach all nations and to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, he conferred on them the power of giving men new life in God.
He had promised through the prophets that in these last days he would pour out his Spirit on his servants and handmaids, and that they would prophesy. So when the Son of God became the Son of Man, the Spirit also descended upon him, becoming accustomed in this way to dwelling with the human race, to living in men and to inhabiting God’s creation. The Spirit accomplished the Father’s will in men who had grown old in sin, and gave them new life in Christ.
Luke says that the Spirit came down on the disciples at Pentecost, after the Lord’s ascension, with power to open the gates of life to all nations and to make know to them the new covenant. So it was that men of every language joined in singing one song of praise to God, and scattered tribes, restored to unity by the Spirit, were offered to the Father as the first fruits of all the nations.
This was why the Lord had promised to send the Advocate: he was to prepare us as an offering to God.
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of God came down upon the Lord, and the Lord in turn gave this Spirit to his Church, sending the Advocate from heaven into all the world into which, according to his own words, the devil too been cast down like lightning.

No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven

Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.

Christ is now exalted above the heavens, but he still suffers on earth all the pain that we, the members of his body, has to bear. He showed this when he cried out from above: Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? And when he said: I was hungry and you gave me food.

Why do we on earth not strive to find rest with him in heaven even now, through the faith, hope and love that unite us to him? While in heaven he is also with us; and we while on earth are with him. He is here with us by his divinity, his power and his love. We cannot be in heaven, as he is on earth, by divinity, but in him, we can be there by love.

He did not leave heaven when he came down to us; nor did he withdraw from us when he went up again into heaven. The fact that he was in heaven even while he was on earth is borne out by his own statement: No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

Out of compassion for us he descended from heaven, and although he ascended alone, we also ascend, because we are in him by grace. Thus, no one but Christ descended and no one but Christ ascended; not because there is no distinction between the head and the body, but because the body as a unity cannot be separated from the head.

Precious Waiting

Life is…a short moment of waiting. But life is not empty waiting. It is to wait full of expectation. The knowledge that God will indeed fulfill the promise to renew everything, and will offer us a “new heaven and a new earth,” makes the waiting exciting…
This “little while” is a precious time. It is a time of purification and sanctification, a time to be prepared for the great passage to the permanent house of God.
 What is my task during my “little while”?
 I want to point to the signs of the Kingdom to come, to speak about the first rays of the day of God, to witness to the many manifestation of the Holy Spirit among us.

Prayer
Eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, through I am here for “a little while,” keep me ever aware that my earthly weeping and mourning will be replaced by rejoicing when I see you in your heavenly glory. Amen.

Eucharist—Communion—Solidarity

Christ Present and Active in the Blessed Sacrament

The second word Communion has by now become quite a fashionable word. It is, in fact, one of the most profound and essential words of Christian tradition, but for this very reason it is extremely important to understand it in all its profundity and breadth.

The word “koinonia” –in Latin, communion- occurred to me as the fundamental concept that expresses the very essence of the Church.

To clarify the central meaning of the term communion, I would like to refer briefly to two great communion passages in the New Testament. The first is found in 1 Corinthians 10:16, where Paul tells us: “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.”

The concept of communion is anchored first and foremost in the most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist, which is why, in the language of the Church, we still describe the reception of this sacrament today, and rightly so, simply as “going to communion;” or “fist communion.”

Here we are told that through this sacrament we enter, as it were, into a blood relationship with Jesus Christ, whereby blood, according to the Hebrew way of thinking, stands for “life”. Thus the passage declares an interpenetration of Christ’s life with ours.

Of course, “blood” in connection with the Eucharist also stands for self-giving, for a life that pours itself out, so to speak, gives itself away for us and to us.

Our existence is energized in such a way that life itself should become a “being for others”, as we can see right before our eyes in the pierced heart of Christ.

In many respects the words about bread are even more striking. Bread stands for a bodily communion with Christ…; Paul illuminates this form another perspective when he says that it is one and the same bread that we all receive in the sacraments. This is quite literally true: The “bread” –the new manna that God gives to us- is one and the same Christ for all. It is truly the one Lord himself who we receive in the Eucharist, or better: the Lord who receives us and makes us part of him.

First Eucharist

Eucharist – Communion – Solidarity

In the early Church, the Eucharist was often called agape, “love”, or simply pax, “peace”.

The Christians of that time thus expressed in a remarkable way the inseparable connection between the mysterium of the hidden presence of the Lord and the praxis of serving the cause of peace, of Christians being peace.

“Eucharist” is today –and righty so- the most common name for the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, which the Lord instituted on the night before his Passion.

Eucharist is the translation of berakha and therefore means praise as well as thanksgiving and blessing. The berekha was the essential and central element of the Last Supper of Jesus; the Eucharistic Prayer, then, which incorporates this centerpiece, is derived immediately from the prayer of Jesus on the eve of his suffering and is the heart of the new spiritual sacrifice. That is why some of the Church Fathers described the Eucharist simply as “prayer”, as the “sacrifice” of praise, as a spiritual sacrifice, which, however, also becomes material and transforms matter: bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, the new food that nourishes us until the resurrection, for eternal life.

A new creation in Christ

I speak to you who have just been reborn in baptism, my little children in Christ, you who are the new offspring of the Church, gift of the Father, and proof of Mother Church’s fruitfulness.
All of you who stand fast in the Lord are a holy seed, a new colony of bees, and the very flower of our ministry and fruit of our toil, my joy and my crown. It is the words of the Apostle that I address to you: Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh and its desires, so that you may be clothed with the life of him whom you have put on in this sacrament.
Such is the power of this sacrament: it is a sacrament of new life which begins here and now with the forgiveness of all past sins, and will be brought to completion in the resurrection of the dead. You have been buried with Christ by baptism into death in order that, as Christ has risen from the dead, you also may walk in newness of life.
You are walking now by faith, still on pilgrimage in a mortal body away from the Lord; but he to whom your steps are directed is himself the sure and certain way for you: Jesus Christ, who for our sake became man.

The Easter praise of Christ
We should understand, beloved, that the paschal mystery is at once old and new, transitory and eternal, corruptible and incorruptible, mortal and immortal. In terms of the Law it is old; in terms of the Word it is new. In its figure it is passing, in its grace it is eternal. It is corruptible in the sacrifice the lamb, incorruptible in the eternal life of the Lord. It is mortal in his burial in the earth, immortal in his resurrection from the dead.
He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, yet he was not a sheep. He was silent as a lamb, yet he was not a lamb. The type has passed away; the reality has come. The lamb gives place to God, the sheep gives place to a man, and the man is Christ, who fills the whole of creation.
The Lord, though he was God, became man. He suffered for the sake of those who suffer, he was bound for those in bonds, condemned for the guilty, buried for those who lie in the grave; but he rose from the dead.
Come, then, all you nations of men and women, receive forgiveness for the sins that defile you. I am your forgiveness; I am the Passover that brings salvation. I am the lamb who was immolated for you. I am your ransom, your life, your resurrection, your light; I am your salvation and your king. I will bring you to the heights of heaven. With my own right hand I will raise you up, and I will show you the eternal Father.

The Messiah enters Jerusalem
“When they were near Jerusalem and had come in sight of Bethpage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go to the village facing you, and you will immediately find a tethered donkey and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, The Master needs them and will send them back directly.”
(Matthew 21: 1-4)

To what town has Jesus come? Why?
Jesus comes on a donkey and not on a stallion. What kind of messiah does that portray?
What kind of kingdom and king were the people expecting? How do their wishes compare with the reality of Jesus?
How might that discrepancy account for the same crowd shouting later on, “Crucify him!”?

The Valley of Dry Bones
“The Lord God says this: I am now going to open your graves; I mean to raise you from your graves, my people, and led you back to the soil of Israel. And you will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and raise you from your graves, my people.”
(Ezekiel 37:12-13)
Has God raised you from “the dead”?
When and how did it happen?
Are you “filled with the spirit”?
What does this mean? How does it happen?

From the depths
“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.”
(Psalm 130: 1-2)
Penitential psalm, but still more a psalm of hope; it takes a prominent place in the Christian liturgy for the dead, not as a lament but as an expression of trust in God the Redeemer.
Why do you think this psalm is a standard for Christian funerals?
Has sin ever cut a rift between you and God?
Was closeness restored?

Life through the Spirit
“Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.”

Give an example from your life of being dependent on the Spirit as you worked to “put to death” an area of sin.

The death of Lazarus
“…Jesus went on to tell them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.’ His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
So them he told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

Why do you think Jesus told his disciples that Lazarus was sleeping at first when he knew that Lazarus was dead?

On the fifth Sunday, when the resurrection of Lazarus is proclaimed, we are faced with the ultimate mystery of our existence: “I am the resurrection and the life… Do you believe this?
For the Christian community, it is the moment to place with sincerity - together with Martha – all of our hopes in Jesus of Nazareth: “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.”

Annual Diocesan Chrism Mass
Monday, April 18 at 11 am at Madonna del Sasso Church in Salinas, Bishop Garcia will bless oils for anointing the sick and those to be baptized, and will consecrate Chrism for use in sealing with the Holy Spirit. He will thus prepare enough oils for the Sacraments in every parish throughout the diocese for one year. Everyone is welcome to attend.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
April 3, 2011

David is anointed
“The Lord said to Samuel, Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen myself a king among his sons… Jesse presented his seven sons to Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, the Lord has not chosen these.
 He then asked Jesse, ‘Are these all the sons you have?’ He answered, ‘There is still one left, the youngest; he is out looking after the sheep…’ At this, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him where he stood with his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord seized on David.”
(1 Samuel 16:1, 7, 10, 13)

The episode appears to derive from the prophetic tradition and remains unrelated to the subsequent history in which David is anointed at Hebron by the men of Judah, and them by the elders of Israel.
As one of David’s family, how would you have felt, being passed over in favor of David? When else has God ignored tradition in choosing one with a heart for God to fulfill his covenant?  

The Good Shepherd
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
(Psalm 23: 5)
This psalm the care of God for the righteous, illustrated by two images: the shepherd, and the host of messianic banquet.
The psalm is traditionally applied to the sacramental life, particularly to baptism and the Eucharist.
Who are your “enemies” today?
What would like your cup to overflow with?

Living as Children of Light
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light; for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth and find out what please the Lord.”
(Ephesians 5: 8-9)
As Jesus cures the blind man, so too are we brought from darkness into light through the grace of baptism.

The cure of the man born blind
“… Jesus heard that the Pharisees had driven him away, and when he found him he said to him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ ‘Sir’, the man replied ‘tell me who he is so that I may believe in him.’ Jesus said, ‘You are looking at him; he is speaking to you’. Then man said, ‘Lord, I believe’, and worshipped him.”
(John 9: 1-41)
Why does Jesus wait until now to fully present himself? How is the man, only now, able to affirm Jesus as Lord?

“The miracle of this healing is a sign that Christ wants not only to give us sight, but also open our interior vision, so that our faith may become ever deeper and we may recognize him as our only Savior.”

The call of Abraham
“The Lord had said Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and you father’s household and go to the land I will show you…So Abram left, as the Lord had told him…”

Where is “home” for you? When did you first leave there? What for? Who or what did you take with you?
Which restriction would you find more intolerable: Leaving your country, never to return? Or never leaving your present hometown? Why?

“We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love rest upon us,

The Gospel of the Transfiguration of the Lord puts before our eyes the glory of Christ, which anticipates the resurrection and announces the divinization of man. The Christian community becomes aware that Jesus leads it, like Peter, James and John “up a high mountain by themselves, to receive the gift of God’s grace.

Annual Ministries Appeal 2011
Streams of Love for One Another
“My being thirsts for God, the living God.”
(Psalm 42:2)
This weekend you along with parishioners throughout the Diocese of Monterey are invited prayerfully to consider a pledge to the 2011 Annual Ministries Appeal.
This year’s annual Diocesan Appeal reminds us of the “Streams of Love for One Another.”
Since every parishioner is a member of the Diocese of Monterey, every household is encouraged to support the work of our Diocese by participating in this appeal. No gift is too small. Once we have met the goal for our parish’s share for diocesan pastoral services, your donations will be returned to our parish for paid the bills. You will have an opportunity to make your pledge during the Masses next weekend.

Please prayer for the new priests, deacons, and for all priests, seminaries and more vocations to religious lives.

The Fall
“The Lord God fashioned man of dust from the soil. Then he breathed into his nostrils a breath of life, and thus man became a living being. Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden…
The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eyes and that it was desirable for the knowledge that it could give. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She gave some also to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.”
(Genesis 2: 7, 3:7)
What food do you find especially tempting?
How do you wish to respond to the choices that God is giving you? Disobedience, hide from God, seek to please God, or receive God’s compassion.

Miserere
“Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness, in your great tenderness wipe away my faults; wash me clean of my guilt, purify me from my sin.
For I am well aware of my faults, I have my sin constantly in mind…”
(Psalm 51: 1-2, 3)
Human being is born in a state of impurity (Job 14:4; Proverb 20:9) which is an implicit recognition of his tendency to evil.
Has covering up sin backfired in your life? How have you seen God’s mercy when you owned up to your sin?

Adam and Jesus Christ
“For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.”
(Romans 5: 19)
What quirks did you inherit from each of your parents? How do you see yourself reflected in your own children (if any)?
Write a thank-you letter to Jesus, reflecting on what he has done for you.

Temptation in the wilderness
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights…”
(Matthew 4: 1-11)
That these diabolical suggestions were actually made is quite compatible with Christ’s sinlessness. Jesus was faced with the idea of being a material and political Messiah with its accompanying human privileges of wealth, glory, power. He chose instead utter dependence on God, humility, obedience to God’s will.

Streams of Love for One Another

In our very being God forms us to seek him and his love and mercy. One of the ways that longing manifests itself in our lives is by encouraging us to reach out in love to others. In working together, we satisfy our thirst for God and create a stream of love through our ministries within the Diocese of Monterey. Through our working together, we can truly be Christ’s hands on earth.  These ministries touch the lives of so many in our Diocese, from the youngest children in our Catholic school, to our young college students, to those studying for the priesthood and the deaconate, to assistance to our retired priests and many other ministries which help us to create a stream of love for one another.
I am asking for your generosity in giving to the Annual Ministries Appeal so that together we form a stream of love for one another.

Love and Obey the Lord
“Let these words of mine remain in your heart and in your soul; fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a circlet… See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: a blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I enjoin on you today; a curse, if you disobey the commandments of the Lord your God and leave the way I have marked out for you today…”
(Deuteronomy 11: 18, 26-28)
What family traditions have you also received and kept?
When have you experienced the blessings of following God’s commands? What (reasons, resources, rewards) helped you to obey?
What “curses” have you or your nation experienced as the result of disobedience?
What is the lesson in that for you?
Prayer in timer of ordeal
“Be a sheltering rock for me, a walled fortress to save me! Into your hands I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, the God of truth. My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies…”
(Psalm 31: 2, 5, 15)
Both Jesus and Stephen quoted verse 5 as they were about die.
What would you like your “famous last words” to be?
What does the phrase “My times are in your hands,” mean to you: Time’s up? Time’s a-wasting? Fighting time? Killing time? Or God’s timing?

The revelation of God’s justice
“God’s justice that was made known through the Law and the Prophets has now been revealed outside the Law, since it is the same justice of God that comes through faith to everyone… All justified through the free gift of his grace by being redeemed in Christ Jesus… Since, as we see it, a man is justified by faith and not by doing something the Law tells him to do.”
(Romans 3: 21-22 24, 28)
Look up “justification,” “redemption,” and “atonement” in a dictionary. What everyday examples could you use to illustrate each word?
When did the message of God’s grace become real to you? What impact is it having on your life right now?

The true disciple
“Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock… But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand…”
(Matthew 7: 24, 27)
