THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH

December 30, 2012

Dying of loneliness

In an audience, Pope Paul VI told how one day when he was Archbishop of Milan, he went out on parish visitation. During the course of the visitation he found an old woman living alone. “How are you?” he asked her. “Not bad,” she answered. “I have enough food, and I’m not suffering from the cold.” “You must be reasonably happy then?” he said. “No, I’m not,” she said as she started to cry, “You see, my son and daughter-in-law never come to see me. I’m dying of loneliness.” Afterwards he was haunted by the phrase, “I’m dying of loneliness.” And the Pope concluded: “Food and warmth are not enough in themselves. People need something more. They need our presence, our time, our love. They need to be touched, to be reassured that they are not forgotten”

(Flor McCarthy in New Sunday and Holy Day Liturgies)

Cancer, heart disease and family relationship.

A few years ago, a study was undertaken to find the U.S. city with the lowest incidence of cancer and heart disease. The winner was Rosette, Pennsylvania. Soon experts descended upon the city, expecting to see a town populated by non-smokers, people who ate the correct food, took regular exercise and kept close track of their cholesterol. To their great surprise, however, the researchers discovered that none of the above was true. They found instead that the city’s good health was tied to the close family bonds that prevailed within the community. This suggests that there is much to be said for a close and loving family relationship

(Robert Duggan & Richard Jajac).

On the last Sunday of the year, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. On this feast day we are offering our own families and all their members on the altar for God’s blessing.

Men’s Club Meeting and Dinner

at 6:30 p.m. We have very good support for one another.

All men WELCOME!!!

At the End of the Year

The particular mind of the ocean filling the coastline’s longing with such brief harvest.

Of elegant, vanishing waves is like the mind of time opening the shapes of days.

As this year draws to its end, we give thanks for the gifts it brought and how they became inlaid within; where neither time nor tide can touch them.

The days when the veil lifted and the soul could see delight; when a quiver caressed the heart, in the sheer exuberance of being here…

The slow, brooding times, when all was awkward and the wave in the mind pierced every sore with salt…

The darkened days that stopped the confidence of the dawn. Days when beloved faces shone brighter with light from beyond themselves; and from the granite of some secret sorrow a stream of buried tears loosened.

We bless this year for all we learned, for all we loved and lost and for the quiet way it brought us nearer to our invisible destination.

(Benedictus A book of Blessings by John O’Donohue)

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 23, 2012

At least I made a difference to that one!”

A little girl was walking along a beach covered with thousands of starfish left dying by the receding tide. Seeking to help, she started picking up the dying starfish and tossing them back into the ocean. A man who watched her with amusement, said, “Little girl, there are hundreds of starfish on the beach. You cannot make a difference by putting a few of them back into the sea.” Discouraged, she began to walk away. Suddenly, she turned around, picked up another starfish, and tossed it into the sea. Turning to the man, she smiled and said, “At least I made a difference to that one!”

Today’s gospel tells us how Mary, a village girl carrying Jesus in her womb, made a difference in their lives of her cousin Elizabeth and of the child in her womb. The child John, as he grew up, helped Mary’s Son to transform the history of mankind by preparing the way for the Messiah. The starfish story suggests that each person, no matter how unimportant, may truly benefit from our work, and that any service, however small, is valuable. The story also shows how seemingly hopeless problems can be solved by taking the first step.

Thanks for the money, but what I really needed was a handshake.”

Composer and performer Bradley James has set Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s teachings and prayers to music in the internationally acclaimed recording, Gift of Love; Music to the Words and Prayers of Mother Teresa. Bradley remembers her teaching: “Mother said we don’t have to go to Calcutta to help the poor; rather, we must help them right in front of us.” He applied this lesson when he encountered a homeless beggar on the streets of San Francisco. Bradley placed some money in his metal cup, then reached out and shook the man’s hand. The recipient gave him a big smile, and the two exchanged names and small talk. Bradley recalls: “Then he pulled me a little closer and said, ‘Thanks for the money, but what I really needed was a handshake.” In this incident it was not the coin, but the gift of human dignity and the love of Christ that Bradley James brought to the beggar through the handshake and his fraternal presence.

In effect, Bradley replicated in his life and experience the joyful mystery of the Lord’s visitation (cf. Luke 1:39-45) described in today’s gospel.

Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. There is a saying, “He (she) who is on fire cannot sit on a chair.” Mary, filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit, hurried to the mountain country where Elizabeth lived, there by conveying the Holy Spirit to her cousin and her child. Like all good Jews, whatever Mary did was prompted by her commitment to God’s word in her life.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 16, 2012

Don’t you give out warnings?”

Patricia Greenlee tells a story about her son who is a West Virginia state trooper. Once he stopped a woman for going 15 miles an hour over the speed limit. After he handed her a ticket, she asked him, “Don’t you give out warnings?” “Yes, ma’am,” he replied. “They’re all up and down the road. They say, “Speed Limit 55.” People have a tendency to disregard the warning signs, don’t they? Sometimes with dire consequences.

Today’s gospel presents John the Baptist warning the Jews of the need of repentance and conversion with prophetic courage.

South Padre Island causeway tragedy

A few years ago, a barge hit a support beam on the causeway going from Port Isabel to South Padre Island in far south Texas. As a result, a portion of the causeway plunged into the Laguna Madre. This all happened during the very early morning hours. Before any indication of this accident was conveyed to anybody, seven or eight automobiles drove through the opening and plummeted into the water several hundred feet below. Every person in those cars died. It look several hours before authorities on both ends of the causeway were notified and all traffic warned of the disaster and the tragedy. It was a horrible event. Even worse, business on the island suffered greatly, as this bridge was the only way for trucks, cars or vacationers to reach the island. Many were angry that plans needed to be canceled, businesses had to be shut down, and only ferries could be used to get to and depart from the island. Now if we had been heading for South Padre Island that morning, would we not have rejoiced that the warning was there and that we had been warned, not left to discover, tragically, the reason for the emptiness of the broken causeway?

In today’s gospel, John is warning a “brood of vipers” that they have to repent and renew their lives, if they are to receive the long awaited Messiah into their midst.

Today’s is called “Gaudete” Sunday because today’s Mass begins with the opening antiphon, “Gaudete in Domino semper” (“Rejoice in the Lord always”). Today we light the rose candle of the Advent wreath to express our communal joy in the coming of Jesus, as our Savior.

Advent is a time for joy, not only because we are anticipating anniversary of the birth of Jesus, but also because God is already in our midst. Christian joy does not come from the absence of sorrow, pain or trouble, but from an awareness of the presence of Christ within our souls.

The Tradition of the Christmas Crib

Following a beautiful and firmly-rooted tradition, many families set up their crib immediately after the feast of the Immaculate Conception, as if to relive with Mary those days full of trepidation that preceded the birth of Jesus. Putting up the crib at home can be a simple but effective way of presenting faith, to pass it on to one’s children. The crib helps us contemplate the mystery of God’s love that was revealed in the poverty and simplicity of the Bethlehem Grotto.

Saint Francis of Assisi was so taken by the mystery of the Incarnation that he wanted to present it anew at Grecio in the living nativity scene, thus beginning an old, popular tradition that still retains its value for evangelization today.

Pope Benedict XVI

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 9, 2012

Preparation for VIPs

When the president or prime minister of a country is scheduled to make a public appearance, his staff prepares weeks and even months in advance to make certain that the proper protocol will be observed and the leader’s security will be assured. Similarly, detailed preparation precedes the appearance of religious leader like the Pope. Programs are scheduled, choral presentations are practiced, gifts are bought and special persons are chosen to present them in the most gracious manner possible, so that the honored one is duly recognized and appreciated. Careful planning also accompanies the appearance of other political figures, celebrity entertainers and rock singers. When rock stars like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen made a tour, elaborate preparations were made for their coming. If they came to the Silver dome in Pontiac, Michigan, for example, their entourage would travel there ahead of time to get things ready for the concert. Stages would be set; lighting would be adjusted; every care would be taken so that the needs and whims of each guest would be fully accommodated.

In fact, one wonders if today’s gospel about John the Baptist proclaiming the coming of Jesus applies more to modern rock stars than it does to the true Messiah.

Only when we put the same care and commitment into our spiritual Christmas preparations that rock stars put into their musical performances, will “all mankind begin to see the salvation of God.”

The Second Sunday of Advent challenges us to prepare a royal highway in our hearts for Jesus so that we may receive him as our saving God during Christmas. We should also be prepared for his daily coming into our lives in the Eucharist, in the Holy Bible and in the praying community. Finally, we are asked to be ready to meet him as our judge on his Second Coming, at the end of our lives and at the end of the world.

The wolf and the lamb shall graze alike, and the lion shall eat hay like the ox but the serpent’s food shall be dust. None shall hurt or destroy on my holy mountain, say the Lord.’

We need to repent and seek forgiveness from God and fellow-human beings

John’s message calls us to confront and confess our sins. We have to turn away from them in sincere repentance and receive God’s forgiveness. There are basically two reasons why people who have recognized their sins fall to receive forgiveness. Jesus is very explicit about this in Matthew 6:14 and 15. He says, “For if you forgive men their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. “

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 2, 2012

Advent

Advent is a time of waiting for Christ, allowing him to be reborn in our lives. It is also a time for renewing our lives by reflecting on and experiencing the several coming (advents) of Christ into our lives. Besides his first coming at his birth, Jesus comes to our lives through the sacraments (especially the Eucharist), through the Word of God, through the worshipping community, at the moment of our death and, finally, in his Second Coming to judge the world.

Be patient; be faithful: Be faithful.

Remember Albert Einstein’s words after the Second World War: “As a lover of freedom, when the revolution came in Germany, I looked to the universities to defend it, knowing that they had always boasted of their devotion to the cause of truth; but no, the universities were immediately silenced. Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers, whose flaming editorials in days gone by had proclaimed their love of freedom; but they, like the universities were silenced in a few short weeks. Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler’s campaign for suppressing truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration for it, because the Church alone has had the courage to stand for intellectual truth, and moral freedom. I am forced to confess that what I once despised, now I praise unreservedly.”

We are Christ’s body in the world today. Be patient. Be faithful. It is the message of today’s gospel and Advent.

We need to prepare ourselves for Christ’s second coming by allowing him to be reborn daily in our lives. Advent is the time for us to make this preparation by repenting for our sins, by renewing our lives through prayer, penance, and by sharing our blessings with others.

A message of warning and hope: The Church begins the Advent season of liturgical year C by presenting the second coming of Christ in glory, in order to give us a vision of our future glory in heaven and to show us the preparation needed for it. The Church reminds us that we are accountable for our lives before Christ the Judge.

Long live Christ the King!

In the 1920s, a totalitarian regime gained control of Mexico and it tried to suppress the Church. To resist the regime, many Christian took up the cry, “Viva Cristo Rey!” Long live Christ the King! They called themselves “Cristeros.” The most famous Cristero was a young Jesuit priest name Padre Miguel Pro. Using various disguises, Padre Pro ministered to the people of Mexico City. Finally the government arrested him and sentenced him to public execution on November 23, 1927. The president of Mexico (Plutarco Elias Calles) thought that Padre Pro would beg for mercy, so he invited the press to the execution. Padre Pro did not plead for his life, but instead knelt holding a crucifix. When he finished his prayer, he kissed the crucifix and stood up. Holding the crucifix in his right hand, he extended his arms and shouted, “Viva Cristo Rey” “Long lives Christ the King!” At that moment the soldiers fired. The journalists took pictures; if you look up “Padre Pro” or “Saint Miguel Pro” on the Internet, you can see that picture.

On His Majesty’s Service

Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, was brought before the Roman authorities and told to curse Christ and he would be released. He replied, “Eighty-six years have I served him, and he has done me no wrong: how then can I blaspheme my king Jesus Christ who saved me?” The Roman officer replied, “Unless you change your mind, I will have you burnt.” But Polycarp said, “You threaten a fire that burns for an hour, and after a while is quenched; for are ignorant of the judgment to come and everlasting punishment for ungodly. Do what you wish.”

The Church’s liturgical year concludes with this feast of Christ the King, instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 to celebrate the jubilee year and the 16th centenary of the Council of Nicaea. Instituting this feast, Pope Pius XI proclaimed: “Pax Christi in regno Christi” (the peace of Christ in the reign of Christ).

We need to assess our commitment to Christ the King today.

We need to give Jesus control over our lives.

We need to follow Christ the King’s lesson of humble service to the truth.

We need to obey the Law of love of Christ the king. Citizens of Christ’s kingdom are expected to observe only one major law –the law of love.

We need to follow Christ the King’s lesson of humble service to the truth.

We need to obey the Law of love of Christ the king. Citizens of Christ’s kingdom are expected to observe only one major law –the law of love.

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY

November 18, 2012

The End time phobia

French “prophet” and astrologer Nostradamus (1503-1566) foretold that the world would end when Easter fell on April 25. This happened in 1666, 1734, 1886 and 1943; it will occur again in 2038.

In 1379, St. Vincent Ferrer (1350-1419), a Spanish Dominican monk, basing his prediction on the number of verses in the Book of Psalms (2,537 verses), predicted the demise of the world in AD 3936.

By the end of 1998, the Mount of Olives Hotel, run by Palestinian Muslims, wrote to 2,000 Protestant Christian groups in the U.S. asking “How would you like to be reserving your rooms at the Mount of Olives Hotel, to wait for ‘second coming’ of Jesus on the first day of the new millennium, 2000 A.D.?...

Hence, today’s reading remind us that we should be well prepared and always ready to meet Jesus at any time, daily in our brothers and sisters and at the end of our lives or the end of the world, whichever comes first.

Bingo first!

Who cares about the Second coming?

There is a second group of people who ignore Christ’s Parousia and stick to their addictions.

A woman was hurrying home from work. This was her Bingo night.

Suddenly she spotted this fellow standing on the edge of the pavement holding aloft a placard, which read: The end of the world is near. She went up to him and said, ‘You say the end of the world is near.’ ‘That’s right, missus,’ he replied. ‘But are you sure?’ ‘Quite sure, missus.’ ‘And you say it’s near.’ ‘Yes, missus.’ ‘How near?’ ‘Oh, very near.’ ‘Could you be more precise?’ ‘This very night, Missus.’ She paused for a moment to reflect on this. Then in a voice full of anxiety, she asked, ‘Tell me, son. Will it be before or after Bingo?’

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

November 11, 2012

A widow’s mite in the life of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

By birth and marriage, Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton was linked to the first families of New York and enjoyed the fruits of living in high society.

Reared a staunch Episcopalian by her mother and stepmother, she learned the value of prayer, Scripture reading and a nightly examination of conscience.

At 19, Elizabeth was the belle of New York. She married a handsome, wealthy businessman, William Magee Seton. They had five children before his business failed, and William died of tuberculosis.

At 30, Elizabeth found herself widowed and penniless, with five small children to support.

While in Italy with her dying husband, Elizabeth had witnessed the Catholic Church in action, through the liver, beliefs and behavior of family friends.

Three basic elements in Catholicism led her to become a Catholic in March, 1805: a belief in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of God, and a conviction that the Catholic Church traced its origin and priesthood in a direct line back to the apostles and to Christ.

When Elizabeth returned to the U.S., many of her family and friends rejected her because she had become a Catholic.

To support her children, she opened a school in Baltimore with the cooperation of some of her friends.

From the beginning, her group was organized along the lines of the religious community which would only be founded officially in 1809. Mother Seton became one of the keystones of the American Catholic Church.

She founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity.

She opened the first American parish school and established the first American Catholic orphanage. All this she did in the span of 46 years while rearing her five children.

She died on January 4, 1821, and was buried in Emmetsburg, Maryland.

In 1963, Mother Seton was beatified, the first American- born citizen to receive this honor. She was canonized in 1975.

Elizabeth Ann Seton was a real widow who offered her mite to God without reservation as the poor widow in today’s gospel did

(Adapted from St. Anthony’s Messenger).

Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors of the treasury… but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

(Mark 12: 43-44)

THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NOVEMBER 4, 2012

The central message of today’s reading is the most fundamental principle of all religions, especially Christianity.

It is to love God in loving others and to love others in loving God.

In others words, it is loving God living in others.

The prayers, bible reading, sacraments, sacrifices and all other religious practices are meant to help us grow in this relationship of love.

Fr. George Anderson served as a chaplain at the maximum security prison at Riker’s Island, New York.

He started a prayer-discussion group among some of the prisoners. The group would read a passage from Scripture, like the parable of the Good Samaritan or the parable of the prodigal son.

The prisoners would then ponder the passage in silence and end by discussing how it applied to their everyday lives.

One evening a prisoner named Richard, from a section for the mentally disturbed, was with the group for the first time.

Fr. Anderson describes the episode this way:

“It was a windy evening in March. There was little heat in the room. An inmate sitting opposite Richard, having come only in a T-shirt and trousers, was shivering. Richard had come with his shoulders wrapped in two blankets. Then while we were discussing the idea of helping each other, Richard suddenly got up, walked to the other inmate, and put one of his blankets around him.”

Richard’s wordless gesture impressed the group more than any words that were spoken.

It also made an important point-the same one Jesus makes in today’s gospel:

Love of God and love of neighbor

Go hand in hand.

Like two sides of the same coin, they cannot be separated.

YEAR OF FAITH 2012-2013

By love, God has reveled himself and given himself to the human being.

God has thus provided the definitive, super-abundant answer to the questions that human being ask him-self about the meaning and purpose of his life.

God has revealed himself to human being by gradually communicating his own mystery in deeds and in words.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY

IN ORDINARY TIME

October 28, 2012

Anecdote:

Two famous prayers for spiritual vision: Cardinal Newman prays for clear vision in his famous poem, “Lead Kindly Light!”

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom; lead Thou me on!

The night is dark, and I am far from home; let Thou keep me on my feet; I do not ask to see.

The distant scene; one step enough for me.

Amazing Grace,” As the captain of British slave ship, John Newton regained his faith during a storm at sea and became an ordained minister who was very active in the abolitionist movement. He explains how he gained his spiritual eyesight in his famous hymn, Amazing Grace.

Amazing grace!

How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.

Today’s gospel, which tells of the healing of the blind man, Bartimaeus, challenges us to strengthen our faith in Jesus, the healer, and invites us to gain true spiritual vision.

Life messages:

Instead of remaining in spiritual blindness, let us pray for spiritual sight. Each one of us suffers from spiritual blindness. Hence, we need the light of the Holy Spirit to enlighten us. Anger, hatred, prejudice, jealousy, evil habits, etc., make us spiritually blind and prevent us from seeing the goodness in our neighbors and God’s presence in them…

We need to “cry out” to Jesus, as Bartimaeus did. Like Bartimaeus, we must seek Jesus with trust in his goodness and mercy…

We need to have the courage of our convictions; we need people who, like Bartimaeus, will refuse to be silenced by the secular leaders of our society. We must make our politicians realize that our country is rejecting Christian principles and facing a loss of values…

YEAR OF FAITH 2012-2013

I Believe” – “We Believe”

Human being is by nature and vocation a religious being. Coming from God, going toward God, human being lives a fully human life only if they freely live by his bond with God.

Human being are made to live in communion with God in whom they find happiness: “when I am completely united to you, there will be no more sorrow or trials; entirely full of you, my life will be complete”

(St. Augustine)

When they listens to the message of creation and to the voice of conscience, human being arrive at certainly about the existence of God, the cause and end of everything.

The Church teaches that the one true God, our Creator and Lord, can be known with certainty from his works, by the natural light of human reason.

TWENTIETH-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 21, 2012

Sir, I am a Corporal!”

During the American Revolution, a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers who were busy pulling out a horse carriage stuck in deep mud. Their officer was shouting instructions to them while making no attempt to help. The stranger who witnessed the scene asked the officer why he wasn’t helping. With great dignity, the officer replied, “Sir, I am a Corporal!”

The stranger dismounted from his horse and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers himself. When the job was completed, he turned to the corporal and said, “Mr. Corporal, next time you have a job like this, and don’t have enough men to do it, inform your commander-in-chief, and I will come and help you again.”

Too late, the proud Corporal recognized General Washington. Where did Washington learn such leadership skills?

I have no doubt he learned them here, in these words of Jesus: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”

The young corporal had these words modeled for him by the man at the top.

Jesus’ disciples, likewise, receive from their leader a picture of servant hood.

Today’s Scripture readings describe leadership as the sacrificial service of others and offer Jesus as the best example. They also explain the servant leadership of Jesus, pinpointing service and sacrifice as the criteria of greatness in Christ’s kingdom.

TWENTIETH-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 14, 2012

On fire with commitment

The philosopher Soren Kierkegaard tells the story a contingent of firemen in a small town. Everybody loved the firemen because they were kind and gentle and dedicated to their work of protecting the community.

One day the firemen raced to a blazing inferno – a building was being consumed in flames. When they arrived in their well-equipped truck, the firemen saw about 500 townspeople there with little water pistols in their hands. Smiling at one another, they were going squirt-squirt, squirt-squirt.

The firemen asked the people what they were doing.

They replied, “We all believe in what you are doing and we each came to make our little contribution – squirt-squirt.”

The captain of the firemen shouted, “Get out of here! This is no place for well-meaning people who want to make a contribution; this is a place for people who are ready to die to put out the flames.”

(Christian Ethic Today, December 2002.)

Discipleship demands a heavy price – sometimes everything we have, everything we own, and everything we are.

Jesus demands of the rich young man in today’s Gospel more than just a well intentioned contribution; he calls him to give up everything to seek what is right and just.

To be a disciple of Christ demands more what is right and just.

To be a disciple of Christ demands more than token offering and the rote adherence to rituals and traditions; our baptism into the life of Christ compels us to focus every dimension of our lives on the things of God.

Jesus challenges those who would be his disciples to move beyond a passive, fearful relationship with God based on “you shall not” to an active, committed relationship to God based on “you shall” – and to do whatever is demanded to “do” just that.

+”Jesus, looking at the rich young man, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me…”

Mark 10:17-30

What is the Year of Faith?

At certain times in the history of the Church, popes have called upon the faithful to dedicate themselves to deepening their understanding of a particular aspect of the faith. In 1967, Pope Paul VI announced a Year of Faith commemorating the 19th centenary of the martyrdom of Sts. Peter and Paul. The year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the word.” In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholic to experience a conversion –to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The pope has described this conversion as opening the “door of Faith” (see Acts 14:27). The “door of faith” is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.

“…Opened the door of faith…”

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 7, 2012

Bells To Ring In Year of Faith

Join Catholic churches across the country: ring your bells at 12 noon on October 11 to celebrate the beginning of the Year of Faith.

At 12 noon on October 11, 2012, hundreds of Catholic churches and thousands of people across the United States will be joining together to ring in the first day of the Year of Faith…

WHAT: Join Catholic churches across the country by ringing your bells for 3 minutes to celebrate the beginning of the Year of Faith. October 11 marks the beginning of the Year of Faith as declared by Pope Benedict XVI. It’s a time to reflect on and renew our faith.

“Ring in the Year of Faith by ringing your church bells for the noon Angelus on October 11, 2012. Let your neighbors know that the New Evangelization is underway in your part of the world.”

Bells have long been part of the Catholic tradition and fulfill an important role in the community. Since the 14th century, it has been customary to ring church bells to remind the faithful to pray the Angelus. Many parishes around the country continue the tradition of ringing the Angelus, at morning, noon, and evening. Church bells also ring out to remember loved ones and commemorate special occasion and events.

YEAR OF FAITH: October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013

The Year of Faith was announced by Pope Benedict XVI last year in his apostolic letter Porta Fidei.

It will begin on October 11, 2012, the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. It also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The year will end on November 24, 2013, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King.

During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith.

TWENTIETH-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

September 30, 2012

Gandhi, Mandela, Dorothy Day and Martin Luther King Jr.

With our fallen human nature, we fall victim to the evil tendency of trying to control the Spirit of God by our intolerance. Our own arrogance insists that another is not qualified to speak on justice or morality because of his/her lower educational qualifications, low-grade lifestyle, humble social background or race. As a society, we also tend to question people’s legitimacy – especially when they challenge us.

Mohandas Gandhi, a Hindu leader in India, challenged the colonial rule of the British Empire over India with his principles of peace and non-violence. But the intolerant British Empire, initially dismissing him as a “silly, half-naked fakir,” tried to silence him by imprisonment. But later they found, to their horror that the entire nation was behind him in its fight for freedom from colonial rule.

Nelson Mandela was ignored by the minority ruling class and was jailed for many for years as a radical because of his option for the poor and the oppressed in South Africa.

Dorothy Day was imprisoned in the U.S. for her beliefs and was accused of being a Communist.

Martin Luther King Jr. challenged a nation and its policy of discrimination. He was continually under surveillance by the FBI and was accused of inciting sedition and of being unpatriotic.

There are Christians who still look on believers belonging to non-Christian religions and on members of Christian denominations different from their own as heretics and semi-pagans.

In today’s gospel, Jesus gives his disciples a lesson in Christian tolerance along with a warning against jealousy and scandal.

“…For whoever is not against us is for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.”

MBA – Mop Bucket Attitude

One man who had an enormous impact on his company was the founder and former CEO of Wendy’s fast-food restaurants, Dave Thomas. Dave Thomas’ life was a remarkable success story. Adopted as a child, he never finished high school. In his book, well done: the Common Guy’s Guide to everyday Success, Dave said he got his MBA graduation outfit—a snazzy knee-length work apron. He claims to be the only founder among America’s big companies whose picture in the corporate annual report shows him wielding a mop and a plastic bucket. That wasn’t a gag. He calls it leading by example. At Wendy’s, he says, MBA doesn’t mean Master of Business Administration. It means Mop Bucket Attitude. It means a commitment to service. Dave Thomas, who died in 2002, had a commitment to service. (Harper Collins, 1994 p.159.) Cited by Dave Redick.

That’s what Jesus wants from his disciples—a Mop Bucket Attitude. We exist to serve, not to be served. That’s the secret of happiness in any job—to see it as a calling, a vocation, and an opportunity.

Today’s reading invite us to become great in the sight of God by doing God’s will, as Jesus did, surrendering our lives in the service of others.

The Lord up holds my life.”

(Psalm 54:3)

We must become great through loving, humble, self-giving service!

I also want to thank all those members of the Parish who contributed their time.

I am very proud of you, all and the Parish blesses you.

With love and prayers, Fr. Eugenio

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

September 16, 2012

Who do Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Islam say that I am?”

The first two groups claim to be Christian and Islam speaks about Christ. But all of them have a confused Christology.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, more commonly called the Mormons, incorporates the Lord’s name in its title, but its beliefs about Jesus are fatally flawed. A basic compendium of the Mormon gospel is titled Mormon Doctrine. It was written by apostle Bruce Redd Mc Conkie, an influential Mormon theologian. According to McConkie, Mormons believe that “Lucifer, the son of the morning, is our elder brother, and the brother of Jesus.” The Journal of Discourses, a 26-volume Mormon publication presenting public sermons by many early Mormon leaders, includes such statements as this: “Jesus, our elder brother was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the Garden of Eden, and who is our father in Heaven.” The same volumes assert, “Jesus was married at Cana of Galilee and had many wives… he also had many children.” From these writings, it is clear that the Mormons fail the test when it comes to answering Jesus Christ’s question, “Who do you say I am?”

The Jehovah’s Witness publication, New Heavens and New Earth, declares by way of response, “Michael the Archangel is no other than the only begotten Son of God, now Jesus Christ.”

Consider the religion of Islam. Ask the Muslim who Jesus is and the answer we get from official publications is “Jesus was no more than a mortal whom Allah favored and made an example to the Israelites. They are unbelievers who say God is Messiah, Mary’s son (Sura 43:59, Quran).

Until people see Jesus as Peter did, as “the Christ, the Son of the Living God,” they miss the mark.

Today’s gospel explains the basis of our faith as acceptance of Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God and our Lord and Savior. It also tells us that Christ Jesus became our Savior by his suffering, death and resurrection. Finally, it outlines the three conditions of Christian discipleship, namely, denying oneself, taking up one’s cross and following Jesus.

Joke of the week

“Who do you say that I am?” On Sunday morning a man showed up at church with both of his ears terribly blistered. So his pastor asked, “What happened to you Jim?” “I was lying on the couch watching a ball game on TV while my wife was ironing nearby. I was totally engrossed in the game when she went out, leaving the iron near the phone. The phone rang, and keeping my eyes on the TV, I grabbed the hot iron and put it to my ear.” “How dreadful,” gasped the pastor. “But how did the other ear get burned?” “Well, you see, I’d no sooner hung up, the guy called back!” He just didn’t get it. Lots of folks never get it and never understand how life really works, even at the simplest levels. That’s why Jesus is pressing his followers – and us with a challenging question in today’s gospel: “Who do you say that am?”

(Msgr. Dennis Clarke)

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

September 9, 2012

The “little monk” who opened blind eyes

At the Annual National Prayer Breakfast on February 2, 1984, Ronald Reagan, the former president of the United States, told the old story of “the little monk,” Telemachus, a martyr whose self-sacrificing commitment to Christian ideals opened the blind eyes and deaf ears of the Romans and their fifth century Christian emperor Honorius.

According to the story, this Turkish monk was led by an inner voice to go to Rome in order to stop the cruel and inhuman gladiatorial fights between slaves. He followed the crowds to the Coliseum where two gladiators were fighting. He jumped into the arena and tried to stop them, shouting “In the name of Christ, hold back!”

The gladiators stopped, but the spectators became indignant. A group of them rushed into the arena and beat Telemachus to death. When the crowd saw the brave little monk lying dead in a pool of blood, they fell silent, leaving the stadium, one by one. Three days later, because of Telemachus’ heroic sacrifice of his own life, the Emperor decreed an end to the games.

In today’s Gospel, which describes the miraculous healing of a deaf mute, we are invited to open our ears and eyes, loosen our tongues and pray for the courage of our Christian convictions to become the voice of the voiceless.

The central theme of today’s readings is an invitation to us to become humble instruments of healing in Jesus’ hands by giving voice to the voiceless and caring love to the needy and the marginalized in our society.

The reading also invite us to open our ears to hear the word of God and to let our tongues be loosened by the Holy Spirit to convey the good news of God’s love and salvation to others.

Joke of the week

An elderly gentleman had had serious hearing problems for a numbers of years. He went to the doctor, and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.” The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!”

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

September 2, 2012

Ritual washing using drinking-water

William Barclay in The Daily Study Bible tells the story of an old Jewish rabbi in the Roman prison diagnosed with acute dehydration which would have led to his death. The prison guards insisted that the rabbi was given his quota of drinking water. So the prison doctor and the officer in charge instructed the guards to watch the rabbi and ascertain what he was doing with his ration of water. They were shocked to find that the rabbi was using almost all his water for traditional ritual washing before prayers and meals.

Today’s gospel tells us how the tradition-addicted Pharisees started questioning Jesus when his disciples omitted the ritual washing of hands in public before a meal.

Put your hand in Jesus’ hand.

For 30 years Mother Teresa worked in the slums of Calcutta, India. She worked among the most forsaken people on earth. You and I would recoil from most of the people that she touched every day – the dispossessed, the downtrodden, the diseased, and the desperate. And yet, everybody who met Mother Teresa remarked on her warm smile. How, after 30 years of working in conditions like that did she keep a warm smile on her face?

Well, it’s interesting. She said that at age 18 she left Yugoslavia to become a Christian servant. She said, “When I was leaving home, my mother told me something beautiful and very strange. She said, ‘You go put your hand in Jesus hand and walk along with him.’” And was the secret of Mother Teresa’s life ever after. (Rev. King Duncan).

Most of us here have good jobs. And we live in nice homes, and we have easy situations. But we don’t have the warm smile on our faces that this little nun, working in the most desperate situation imaginable, had on her face. What’s the difference? It may be that we’ve never put our hand in Jesus hand. It may be that we have Him only on our lips.

Today’s readings explain what true religion is. It is not simply the scrupulous external observance of rules, laws, traditions and rituals. It is a loving, obedient relationship with God expressed in recognizing His presence in other human beings and rendering them loving and humble service. Prayers, rituals, sacraments and religious practices only help us to practice this true religion in our daily lives.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 26, 2012

Martyrs’ choice for God, for Christ and his teachings.”

The Old Testament, the New Testament and the history of the Church tell the stories of brave men and women who heroically exercised their freedom of choice for God and His commandments and courted martyrdom,

II Maccabees 6: 18-31 describes how the 90 year old saintly Scribe Eleazar, welcomed martyrdom instead of eating the flesh of pork. The same book describes another heroic Jewish mother and seven of her brave children who lost their lives by resisting the order of the Greek commander to reject their Jewish faith.

The martyrdom of St. Stephen is described in the Acts of the Apostles.

The first three centuries saw thousands of Christian heroically choosing Christ and courting the cruel death inflicted by the pagan Roman Empire.

St. Thomas More was the second in power in England and St. John Fisher the Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University. Both were executed by King Henry VIII for choosing the teaching of the Church on marriage and divorce instead of choosing their king’s view.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian and pastor, chose to resist the anti-Christian and non-ethical doctrines of Hitler and was executed at 39.

Today’s readings challenge us to make a choice for God and His teachings or against God.

I’m Jesus! Don’t you choose me?”

There is the story that during the Second World War certain Nazis shot down a group of Jews and buried them in a mass grave. A partially hurt twelve-year-old boy was still alive. He dug his way out of the shallow dirt and went around the neighborhood seeking shelter in homes. The people knew what had happened and, when they saw the boy caked with dirt, they hurriedly shut the door in his face. One woman was about to do the same when the boy said: “mom, don’t you recognize me? I’m the Jesus you Christians say you love.” The lady broke into tears and received the boy into her home.

She had made her choice for Jesus.

In today’s gospel, Jesus challenges his audience to believe him and to accept his promise of the Eucharistic food.

Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 19, 2012

Touching the body of Christ!

Mother Teresa of Calcutta had a rule that when a newcomer arrived to join her Order, the Missionaries of Charity, the very next day the newcomer had to go to the Home of the Dying. One day a girl came from outside India to join the Order.

Mother Teresa said to her: “You saw with what love and care the priest touched Jesus in the Host during Mass. Now go to the Home for the Dying and do the same, because it is the same Jesus you will find there in the broken bodies of our poor.”

Three hours later the newcomer came back and, with a big smile, said to her, “Mother, I have been touching the body of Christ for three hours.” “How? What did you do?” Mother Teresa asked her. “When I arrived there,” she replied, “they brought in a man who had fallen into a drain, and been there for some time. He was covered with dirt and had several wounds. I washed him and cleaned his wounds. As I did so I knew I was touching the body of Christ.”

To be able to make this kind of connection we need the help of the Lord himself. It is above all in the Eucharist that he gives us this help.

We need to allow our body to be broken and our bloodshed for other as Jesus did: When we receive Jesus in Holy Communion we accept a great challenge. We accept the triumphs and the tragedies, joys and the pains necessary to build up the Kingdom of God wherever we have been called to serve.

That is why, at the end of the Mass, we are sent out to announce the Gospel of the Lord, through the witness of our humble services and exemplary lives, radiating Jesus’ love, mercy, forgiveness and spirit of service all around us.

As we walk away from the altar we may perhaps hear Jesus saying: “This is my Body, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

What a power we would be for our world around us if each one of us could say that and mean it!

That is why, at the end of the Mass, we are sent out with, “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life,” through our lives.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 12, 2012

Two Fat Ladles

Clarissa Dickson Wright is a British celebrity chef she and Jennifer Paterson, are best known as the Two Fat Ladies on the British television cooking show of that name.

They preached the joys of cooking that accurately, if irreverently, described them both. The show was heavy on humor as well as calories. Avoiding popular low-fat diets, the two fat ladies sought to reclaim traditional home-cooking. They themselves were the best advertisements for their recipes, which usually featured heavy doses of butter and cream. The two fat ladies are part of a growing trend to forget food deprivation and just say yes to bacon. Dietitians now argue that fat-free foods are high in sugar and calories – which explains why people on low-fat or no-fat diets get fat. Gwen Shamblin’s The Weigh Down Diet, which advises using spirituality to avoid overeating, has already sold more than 1.2 million copies to overweight Christians.

The bottom line is that people are scrambling like crazy to find the diet that is right for them. But there is another diet not many people talk about, presented in today’s gospel: the “Bread of Life Diet.”

It’s spiritually high-carb, but offers full nutritional value. Jesus says, “I am the bread of life,” and promises that people on his program “will never hunger or thirst again!” These are extravagant claims, like the kind you might find on soy milk or fat-burners.

But Jesus can deliver on what he promises.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 5, 2012

Cat to kill mice

Once there was a young hermit who lived as an ascetic in a forest. He owned nothing except a pair of loincloths. One morning, to his great disappointment, he found that mice had destroyed one of the loincloths. He brought a cat to kill the mice and then a cow to give milk to the cat. Later, as the cows multiplied, he hired a girl from the nearby village to look after the cows and to sell the extra milk in the village. Finally, his ever-growing material needs prompted him to end his religious life, marry the girl and settle down as a farmer in the village. This little story illustrates how easily the never-ceasing hunger for material things can take over our spiritual life.

In today’s gospel, Jesus promises to satisfy our spiritual hunger by offering his body as our food.

The Great Depression Bread-lines

In the depression years of 1930’s millions of Americans were out of work and many thousands were hungry. In a number of cities religious groups set up bread-lines to feed the hungry. One of these was the Franciscan monastery at Cincinnati, Ohio. Every evening, the Friars, Brothers and lay volunteers prepared and gave a nourishing sandwich of bread and meat to hundreds of hungry men and women.

It was interesting to note the reactions of the recipients. Many accepted the well-prepared and well-wrapped food with a smile and thank you. Others, with head hanging, snatched the food package and shuffled off. Some tore the bag at once and started eating as they hurried away. Most of them ate every last crumb after a silent prayer and put the wrapping into a nearby container, though some would eat only the meat and discard the bread on the roadside. A few discontented ones just opened the package and then threw the entire contents away in protest.

The way those hungry unfortunates reacted to that little lunch is a lot like the way his listeners received the words of Jesus in today’s gospel.

In today’s gospel Jesus makes the unique and bold claim: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

Jesus was offering the crowd bread from heaven, bread that nourishes for eternal life, bread available to people who have faith in Jesus Christ.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 29, 2012

A bag of rise to share

From her personal experience, Mother Teresa relates a story showing how the poor are more generous than the rich because they have experienced hunger and poverty. Learning of a poor Hindu family in Calcutta who had been starving for many days, Mother Teresa visited them and brought a big parcel of rice to the mother. She went surprised to see how the mother divided the rice into equal portions and went out with one bundle to give it to her Moslem neighbor. When she returned, Mother Teresa asked her why she had done such a generous deed. The woman replied: “My family can manage with half the rice in this bag. My neighbor’s family has several children and they are also starving.”

Today’s gospel tells the story of a small boy who showed this same kind of generosity. By sharing his small lunch (which consisted of five barley loaves and two dried fish), be became the instrument in Jesus’ working of a miracle that fed thousands.

Today’s reading invites us to become humble instruments in God’s hand by sharing our blessings with our needy brothers and sisters. They also remind us that if our country has been blessed with an abundance of earthly bread or with the technical capabilities to produce such abundance, then these gifts are for sharing with the hungry people and poor countries. Once physical hungers are satisfied, then we are challenged to satisfy the deeper hungers, for love, mercy, forgiveness, companionship, peace and fulfillment.

STEWARDSHIP

How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me?” (Psalm 116:12)

“Thanksgiving” is the meaning of the Greek word “Eucharist.” The attitude of thankfulness is central to Christian spirituality. The debt of gratitude we own for God’s faithful love can be repaid only in a two-sided coin: turning to God in thanksgiving and doing for others what has been done for us.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 22, 2012

The hour of a mid-week prayer in a little church

Michael Faraday, an early pioneer of electromagnetic current, once addressed a convocation of scientists. For an hour, he held the audience spellbound with his lecture on the nature of the magnet. After he had finished, he received a thundering ovation. The Prince of Wales, late King Edward VII, stood to congratulate him. The applause thundered again.

Just as quickly, a deadened silence pervaded the audience. Faraday had left. It was the hour of a midweek prayer service in a little church of which he was a member.

Do we have a similar commitment?

Like Faraday, have we pledged our allegiances to a Power that outlasts the short-lived fads and governments of this world? One of the reason we gather for worship each week is for the refreshment of our spirits, the recharging of our spiritual; batteries.

We need to shut the world out and focus our attention on God’s presence in our lives. Jesus knew the value of getting away to a quiet place. With our families, would we put into practice what the Wall Street Journal suggested a generation ago?

“What American needs… is a revival of piety – the piety of our fathers.”

Today’s gospel tells us how Jesus takes his worn-out disciples to a lonely place for rest and refreshing.

Today’s readings explain how God, like a good shepherd, redeems His people and provides for them.

Today’s readings also challenger us to use our God-given authority in the family, in the church and in society, with fidelity and responsibility.

Today, pastoral ministry includes not only the pastoral care given by those named or ordained as “pastors,” but the loving service given by all Christians who follow different calling to serve and lead others.

“… His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd…”

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 15, 2012

Let people hear it.”

Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962), the world-famous violinist, earned a fortune with his concerts and compositions, but he generously gave most of it away.

So, when he discovered an exquisite violin on one of his trips, he wasn’t able to buy it. Later, having raised enough money to meet the asking price, he returned to the seller, hoping to purchase that beautiful instrument. But to his great dismay it had been sold to a collector. Kreisler made his way to the new owner’s home and offered to buy the violin. The collector said it had become his prized possession and he would not sell it, Fritz disappointed, Kreisler was about to leave when he had an idea. “Could I play the instrument once before it is consigned to silence?” he asked. Permission was granted, and the great virtuoso filled the room with such heart-moving music that the collector’s emotions were deeply stirred. “I have no right to keep this violin to myself,” he exclaimed, “It’s yours, Mr. Kreisler. Take it into the world, and let people hear it.”

Jesus gives us the same instruction the collector gave Kreisler when He shares with us the mission He gives the Apostles today in the Gospel.

Today’s reading remind us of our Divine Adoption as God’s children and of our call to preach the good news of Jesus by bearing witness to God’s love, mercy and salvation as revealed through Jesus.

God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world.”

(Ephesians 1:4)

So do not worry and say, “What are we to eat?” or “What are we to drink?” or “what are we to wear?” (Matthew 6:31)

PORTA FIDEI

“… I have decided to announce a Year of Faith. It will begin on 11 October 2012; the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and it will end on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King, on 24 November 2013. The starting date of 11 October 2012 also marks the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a text promulgated by my Predecessor, Blessed John Paul II, with a view to illustrating for all the faithful the power and beauty of the faith. This document, an authentic fruit of the Second Vatican Council, was requested by the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in 1985 as an instrument at the service of catechesis and it was produced in collaboration with all the bishops of the Catholic Church.

Moreover, the theme of the General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops that I have convoked for October 2012 is “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith.”

This will be a good opportunity to usher the whole Church into a time of particular reflection and rediscovery of the faith…

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 8, 2012

Today’s reading introduces JESUS as a prophet and explains how prophets and other messengers from GOD inevitably suffer rejection.

The readings challenge us to face rejection and hardship with prophetic courage.

Don’t allow rejection to derail your dreams

Brilliant British Theologian G.K. Chesterton could not read until he was eight years old. A teacher said if his head were opened they would probably find a lump of fat where there was supposed to be a brain. That teacher was wrong.

Einstein’s parents were informed by a teacher that he would never amount to anything.

For The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Beatrix Potter received seven rejection slips before finding a publisher.

Richard Bach got twenty rejection slips before Jonathan Livingston Seagull was published.

Dr. Seus, one of the most popular children’s authors of all time, got more than two dozen rejection slips before The Cat in the Hat made it to print.

Ruth Graham felt an uncontrollable urge to run out of the meeting the first time she heard Billy preach. She was not under conviction. She was put off by his preaching style. Billy had to improve his preaching before Ruth would become his wife.

Today’s gospel tells us how JESUS encountered rejection with prophetic courage.

PORTA FIDEI

The “door of faith” (Acts 14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church. It is possible to cross that threshold when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart allows itself to be shaped by transforming grace. To enter through that door is to set out on a journey that lasts a lifetime.

Ever since the start of my ministry as Successor of Peter, I have spoken of the need to rediscover the journey of faith so as to shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ.

We cannot accept that salt should become tasteless or the light be kept hidden (cf. Mt 5:13-16).

In the light of all this, I have decided to announce a Year of Faith. It will begin on 11 October 2012; the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and it will end on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King, on 24 November 2013.

The Year of Faith, from this perspective, is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the one Savior of the world… Benedict XVI

Joke Rejection at the Pearly Gate, too!

A cab driver reaches the Pearly Gates and announces his presence to Saint Peter, who looks him up in his Big Book. Upon reading the entry for the cabby, Saint Peter invites him to grab a silk robe and a golden staff and to proceed into Heaven.

A preacher is next in line behind the cabby and had been watching these proceedings with interest. He announces himself to Saint Peter. Upon scanning the preacher’s entry in the Big Book, Saint Peter furrows his brow and says, “Okay, we will let you in, but take that cotton robe and wooden staff.”

The preacher is astonished and replies, “But I am a man of the cloth. You gave that cab driver a gold staff and a silk robe. Surely, I rate higher than a cabby.” Saint Peter responded matter-of factly: “here we are interested in results; when you preached, people slept. When the cabby drove his taxi, people prayed.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY

IN ORDINARY TIME

July 1, 2012

Do not be afraid; just have faith.”

Ann Jillian, a three-time Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress and singer, is an American actress born to Roman Catholic Lithuanian immigrant parents. Since 1985, she has added motivational speaking to her impressive list of credits, addressing business, medical, professional and women’s group with her own unique blend of humor and inspiration. Her prowess extends from the world’s concert halls to feature film and the Broadway stage.

She has starred in over 25 TV movies, and made hundreds of other TV appearances. Her TV movie, The Ann Jillian Story, which recounts her victory over breast cancer, was the # 1 film of that TV season, but, more important, it delivered Ann’s message about the hopeful side of breast cancer to its millions of viewers. In 1985, the then 35-years-old actress made headlines when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. On her way to the hospital to check the nature of the growth which she had noticed, she stopped at St. Francis de Sales Church and read the inscription on the door.

“The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.”

She went into the church and prayed for the strength to accept her ordeal.

The radiant trust in God and peace of mind she maintained before and after the surgery (double mastectomy), was big news in the media and a great inspiration for all cancer patients.

She trust in Jesus’ words given in today’s gospel, “DO NOT BE AFRAID; JUST HAVE FAITH.”

Actually this phrase is repeated in the Bible more the 365 times in the Bible.

We need to accept God’s call to health, wholeness and holiness!

We need to continue the healing mission of the Church!

We need to have trusting faith in the mercy and divine power of Jesus!

The Faith of the Church

Jesus fully, completely, and definitively reveals God to humanity.

Even more dramatically, Jesus reveals that God is with us to save us, to lift us up, to snatch us from the dark forces of sin and death, and to make us sharers in eternal life.

Our response to this great revelation is what Saint Paul calls “the obedience of faith”

(Cf. Dogmatic Constitution

THE NATIVITY OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

June 24, 2012

The voice of one crying in the wilderness

The Church observes the birth of John as a hallowed event.

We have no such commemoration for any other fathers; but it is significant that we celebrate the birthdays of John and of Jesus.

This day cannot be passed by. And even if my explanation does not match the dignity of the feast, you may still meditate on it with great depth and profit.

John was born of a woman too old for childbirth; Christ was born of a youthful virgin. The news of John’s birth was met with incredulity, and his father was struck dumb. Christ’s birth was believed, and he was conceived through faith.

John, then, appears as the boundary between the two testaments, the old and the new. That he is a sort of boundary the Lord himself bears witness, when he speaks of the law and the prophets up until John the Baptist.

Thus he represents times past and is the herald of the new era to come. As a representative of the past, he is born of aged parents; as a herald of the new era, he is declared to be a prophet while still in his mother’s womb. For when yet unborn, he leapt in his mother’s womb at the arrival of blessed Mary.

In that womb he had already been designated a prophet, even before he was born; it was revealed that he was to be Christ’s precursor, before they ever saw one another.

These are divine happenings, going beyond the limits of our human frailty.

Eventually he is born, he receives his name, and his father’s tongue is loosened. See how these events reflect reality.

Zechariah is silent and loses his voice until John, the precursor of the Lord, is born and restores his voice…

From a Sermon by Saint Augustine.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way.

Respect Life At All times!!!

  • DEATH –

WHAT A Wonderful way to explain it…

A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, ‘Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.’ Very quietly, the doctor said, ‘I don’t know…’

“You don’t know? You’re, a Christian man, and don’t know what’s on the other side?’

The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the other side came a sound of scratching and whining. And as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said, ‘Did you notice my dog? He’s never been in this room before. He didn’t know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here. And when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing… I know my Master is there and that is enough.’

May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

June 17, 2012

God planted the seed of his kingdom in our heart.

We must nurture it with trust and with patience.

Knotholes

In the early years of baseball there weren’t any reinforced concrete stadiums.

There was only a grandstand with a board fence enclosing the outfield.

Sometimes the board fence had a knothole in it. Small boys would flock around it to get a free glimpse of the game.

A knothole didn’t offer a good view of the game, but it was good enough to give an idea of what was going on.

Some ballpark fences had several knotholes. There would be on in left field, one in center field, and another in right field. By moving from one to the other, you could get different views of the game.

The parables of Jesus are a lot like knotholes in a ballpark fence.

They give you a glimpse of God’s kingdom.

Parables don’t give you a good view of it, but it’s good enough to give you an idea of what the kingdom is like.

Take the fourth chapter of Mark’s Gospel.

It contains three different parables about God’s kingdom. By moving from one to the other, you can get three different views of the kingdom.

Interestingly, all three parables are about seeds.

The first parable tells about a farmer who planted seed. Some was planted in good soil, some in bad soil. Only the seed in the good soil bore fruit.

The second parable, which we just read in today’s gospel, tells how seed grows beneath the soil without the farmer knowing how. It’s mystery to him.

The third parable, which we also read in today’s gospel, contrasts the tiny seed to the large beautiful plant that grows from it.

Each of the three parables gives us an insight into God’s kingdom.

The first parable reveals that the kingdom can grow only in good hearts –hearts that are open to it.

The second parable reveals that God’s kingdom grows in our heart in a marvelous, mysterious way, without our knowing how.

The third parable reveals that the tiny seed of the kingdom in our heart will eventually grow into something beautiful.

Practically, what does all this mean for us?

First, it means we must trust God.

Second, we need to be patient.

Happy Father’s Day!!!

May you be gentle and loving, clear and sure.

May you trust in the unseen providence that has chosen you all to be a Family. May you stand sure on your ground and know that every grace you need will unfold before you. Like all the mornings of your life.

GOD BLESSES YOU!

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

June 10, 2012

The two last precious gifts given to us by Jesus are the Holy Eucharist as our spiritual food, on Holy Thursday, and Jesus’ mother Mary as our mother, on Good Friday.

Corpus Christ” is the celebration of the abiding presence of a loving God as Emmanuel - God with us – that we, His Church, may offer collective thanks to our Lord living with us in the Eucharist.

The feast gives us an occasion to learn more about the importance and value of the “Real Presence” so that we may appreciate the Sacrament better and receive maximum benefit from it.

We believe in the “Real Presence” of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist because: Jesus promised it after miraculously feeding the 5000; Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist during his Last Supper; Jesus commanded his disciples to repeat it; and “Nothing is impossible for God.”

We explain the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist by: “transubstantiation” which means that the substance of the consecrated bread and wine is changed to Jesus’ glorified body and blood by the action of the Holy Spirit and its accidents like color, shape, taste, etc., remain the same.

I will not permit Christ to return to Albania as long as I am in charge.”

Mother Teresa was given a reception by the cruel Communist dictator Enver Hoxha who ruled Albania for 40 years from 1945 to 1985. He imposed atheism as the official religion in 1967. The possession of a Bible or cross often meant a ten-year prison them. Welcoming Mother Teresa in 1985, he stated that he appreciated her world-wide works of charity, and then added, “But I will not permit Christ to return to Albania as long as I am in charge.” In her reply after thanking the president for the reception Mother said, “Mr. President, you are wrong. I have brought not only the love of Christ into my native land but also the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist right into your presidential palace. I am allowed to carry Jesus in a pixy during my visit of this Communist country where public worship is a crime. I keep Jesus in the consecrated host in my pocket. Jesus will surely return to this country very soon.” Communist rule collapsed in Albania in 1992, and Christian and Muslims reopened their churches and mosques for worship.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

June 3, 2012

The mystery of the most HOLY TRINITY is a basic doctrine of faith in Christianity, understandable not with our heads but with our hearts.

It teaches us that there are three distinct persons in one God, sharing the same divine nature.

Our mind cannot grasp this doctrine which teaches that 1+ 1+ 1= 1 and not 3. But we believe in this mystery because JESUS who is GOD taught it clearly, the evangelists recorded it, the Fathers of the Church tried to explain it and the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople defined it is a dogma of Christian faith.

The universal testimony

A good illustration of the Trinity comes from world renowned scientist Dr. Henry Morris. He notes that that the entire universe is Trinitarian by design. The universe consists of three things: matter, space, and time. Take away any one of those three and the universe would cease to exist. But each one of those is itself a trinity. Matter = mass + energy + motion. Space = length + height + breadth. Time = past + present + future. Thus the whole universe witnesses to the character of the God who made it.

The heavens declare the glory of God, the vault of heaven proclaims his handiwork; day discourse of it to day, night to night on the knowledge…”

(Psalm 19: 1 -2)

You ask me a riddle?”

The late Cardinal Cushing tells of an occasion when he was administering last rites to a man who had collapsed in a general store. Following his usual custom, he knelt by the man and asked, “Do you believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit?” The Cardinal said the man roused a little bit, opened an eye, looked at him and said, “Here I am, dying, and you ask me a riddle.” Call them riddles. Call them mysteries. There are things about life and faith we do not understand. I am not going to suggest that you resign your effort to understand.

Most Holy Trinity, who lives in me, I praise you, I worship you, I adore you and I love you.”

Joke

Wisdom from a child’s mouth

A priest went into a second-grade classroom of the parish school and asked, “Who can tell me what the blessed Trinity means?” A little girl lisped, “The blethed twinity meanth there are thwee perthonth in one God.” The priest, taken aback by the lisp, said, “Would you say that again? I don’t understand what you said.” The little girl answered, “Y’not thuppothed to underthtand; i’th a mythtewy.”

PENTECOST SUNDAY

May 27, 2012

Pentecost literally means 50th. It is a feast celebrated on the 50th day after the Passover feast by the Jews and a feast celebrated on the 50th day after the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus by the Christians. The Jewish Pentecost was originally a postharvest thanksgiving feast. Later it was celebrated to remember God’s covenants with Noah after the Deluge and with Moses at Mt. Sinai.

Fly like an eagle”

There is an old fable about a changeling eagle. A tribesman who lived in a forest, one day found an egg of an eagle. He took the egg home and hatched it along with the chicken eggs. This eaglet started growing up with the other chicks. It started eating white ants and little worms, pecking and hopping here and there like the other chicks. Bu it never learned to fly like an eagle. One day as it was foraging for food from the ground, it saw an eagle majestically soaring high in the sky. As the eaglet was admiring the grandeur of the soaring eagle, the other chicks came and said to the eaglet, “Look that is the eagle – the king of the birds. You and I are chickens. We cannot fly like the eagle.”

-Often we lead poor lives without realizing the power of the Holy Spirit residing with us. Let us learn to connect ourselves to this great spiritual powerhouse of the Holy Spirit by daily praying for his anointing.

The role of the Holy Spirit in Christian life

  1. As an indwelling God, He makes us His Living Temples.

  2. As a strengthening God, He strengthens us in our fight against temptations and in our mission of bearing witness to Christ by transparent Christian lives.

  3. As a sanctifying God, He makes us holy through the sacraments: He makes us children of God and heirs of heaven through Baptism. He makes us temples of God, warriors and defenders of faith, through Confirmation. He enables us to be reconciled to God by pardoning our sins through Reconciliation. He gives us spiritual nourishment via the Holy Eucharist by converting bread and wine into Jesus body and blood through Epiclesis.

  4. As a teaching and guiding God, He clarifies and constantly reminds us of Christ’s teachings.

  5. As a listening and talking God, He listens to our prayers and enables us to pray, and He speak to us through the Bible.

  6. As a giver of gifts, He gives us His gifts, fruits and charismas.

Today the Easter candle is to be borne in procession at the end of each Sunday Mass as a sign that the Easter Season has come to an end!

Alleluia!!!

THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

OF OUR LORD

May 20, 2012

The disciples who completed Puccini’s opera Turandot

The Italian composer Giacomo Puccini wrote La Boheme, Madama Butterfly and Tosca. It was during his battle with terminal cancer in 1922 that he began to write Turandot, which many now consider his best work. He worked on the score day and night, despite his friends’ advice to rest, and to save his energy. When his sickness worsened, Puccini said to his disciples, “If I don’t finish Turandot, I want you to finish it.” He died in 1924, leaving the work unfinished. His disciples gathered all that was written of Turandot, studied it in great detail, and then proceeded to write the remainder of the opera.

The world premier took place in La Scala Opera House in Milan in 1926, and Toscanini, Puccini’s favorite student, conducted it. The opera went beautifully, until Toscanini came to the end of the part written by Puccini. He stopped the music, put down the baton, turned to the audience, and announced, “Thus far the master wrote, but he died.” There was a long pause; no one moved. Then Toscanini picked up the baton, turned to the audience and, with tears in his eyes, announced, “But his disciples finished his work.” The opera closed to thunderous applause, and found a permanent place in the annals of great works.

Jesus instructs us in his Ascension message to finish his work of saving mankind by proclaiming His good news in words and deeds.

We need to be proclaimers and evangelizers: To be a Christian is to be a proclaimer and an evangelizer. There is a difference between preaching and proclaiming. We preach with words but we proclaim with our lives. Let us ask the guidance of the Spirit of God to bear witness to Jesus by our transparent Christian lives.

We need to transmit his teachings to the world: Jesus taught us lessons of faith, hope, love, forgiveness, mercy and salvation by his life and preaching and gave us the mission to teach these to others.

We need seek our help in this mission from the ascended Jesus who is our strength and encouragement: We will be able to overcome doubts about our faith and baseless fears, anxieties and worries by meditating on Jesus’ Ascension and the lesson it teaches, that we, too, are called to share his glory in heaven.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

May 13, 2012

She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.”

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80’s arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. The medico took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him. Since he, himself, was not busy the medico took time to evaluate the man’s wound. The wound was well healed, and so he talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, the medico asked his patient if he had another doctor’s appointment as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman said that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. In answer to the medico’s question about her health, the old man responded that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s disease. When the medico asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late, he replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. The medico was surprised, and asked him why, if his wife didn’t know who he was, he went every morning faithfully for the breakfast. The old man smile and said, “She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.” The medico with tears in the eyes said to him, “That is the kind of love I want in my life.” True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Keeping in Touch

The lunar module Eagle, carrying astronauts Aldrin and Armstrong, landed on the moon July 20, 1969.

While Armstrong prepared for his moon walk, Aldrin unpacked bread and wine and put them on the abort guidance system computer. He describes what he did next.

“I poured the wine into the chalice…. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup. It was interesting to think that the very first liquid ever poured on the moon and the very first eaten there were communion elements.

Just before eating and drinking the elements, Aldrin read this passage from the Gospel according to John:

I am the vine, and you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me.”

Commenting on his Communion experience alone on the moon, Aldrin says, “I sense especially strongly my unity with our church back home, and the Church everywhere.”

Guideposts Treasury of Hope

That story not only gives special meaning to today’s gospel but also underscores the way we, the branches, remain united with Jesus, the vine.

We remain united to Jesus by three ways in particular: by gathering in his name, by listening to his word, and by sharing his Body and Blood.

This leads us to an important point: If we want to find Jesus today, we will find him in his Church, or we won’t find him at all.

Sometimes we hear people say, “I can find Jesus and unite myself to him in my own way. I don’t need the Church.”

If we the people today are to find Jesus, we, the Church, must make him visible to them.

Lord, help us remember always that where your Church is, there you are.

An elderly woman walked into the local country church. The friendly usher greeted her at the door and helped her up the flight of steps. “Where would you like to sit?” he asked politely. “The front row please,” she answered. “You really don’t want to do that,” the usher said. “The pastor is really boring.” “Do you happen to know who I am? I’m the pastor’s mother,” she declared indignantly. “Do you know who I am?” The usher asked. “No.” she said. “Good,” he answered.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

April 29, 2012

Pope John Paul II, the good shepherd.

The most beautiful and meaningful comment on the life and the legacy of Pope John Paul II was made by the famous televangelist Mr. Billy Graham.

In a TV interview he said: “He lived like his Master the Good Shepherd and he died like his Master the Good Shepherd.”

In today’s gospel, JESUS claims that he is the Good Shepherd and explains what he does for his sheep.

The fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday. It is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

The scripture lessons are about shepherds.

The title of the parish priest, “pastor,” means shepherd. A shepherd leads, feeds, nurtures, comforts, corrects, and protects his flock –responsibilities that belong to every church leader.

The earliest Christians had seen Jesus as the fulfillment of the ancient Jewish dream of a good shepherd.

In this Easter season, Jesus calls out to all his sheep – not just the “professional” religious or the preordained saints among us, but every one of us; the confused and the conflicted, the lost and the lax, the unloved and the unappreciated. Every life here was created by God for one reason: to manifest his love for all lives. That is the ultimate test of a vocation that is the Good Shepherd’s call to everyone in his flock. In the “busyness” and stress of our lives, in the challenges of being a parent or child, a professional or laborer, a teacher or student, Christ calls every one of us to a life of holiness and fulfillment.

The Good Shepherd has risen, who laid down his life for his sheep and willingly died for his flock, alleluia.

Joke A man comes upon a shepherd guarding his flock, and proposes a wager: “I will bet you $100, against one of your sheep, that I can tell you the exact number in this flock,” the man says. The shepherd accepts. “973,” says the man. The shepherd, astonished at the accuracy says “I am a man of my word; take the sheep you have won.” The man picks a ‘sheep’ and begins to walk away. “Wait,” cries the shepherd, “Let me have a chance to get even. Double or nothing that I can give your exact occupation.” “Sure,” replies the man. “You work for the Tax Bureau,” say the shepherd. “Amazing!” responds the man, “How did you deduce that?” “Well,” says the shepherd, “if you will first put down my dog, I will tell you.”

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

April 22, 2012

A man at the Super Bowl

A man bought the very last seat for the Super Bowl. It was a rotten seat, close to the blimp than to the field, but early in the first quarter, he noticed an empty seat on the 50 - yard line. He scrambled down and somewhat furtively sat in the seat. “Excuse me,” he asked, “is anyone sitting here?” “No,” said the man on his right. “That’s incredible. Who in his right mind would pass up a seat like this for the Super Bowl?” “Well, actually,” said the man, “the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to be here with my dear wife, but she passed away. This is the first Super bowl in twenty years that we have not been together.” “How sad!” said the other fellow. “But couldn’t you find someone to come with you, a relative or a close friend?” “No,” said the man, “they’re all at the funeral of my wife!”

The widower in the story was missing something in head and heart.

Emotional crisis can blur our vision of reality as happened to the apostles in today’s gospel.

In Luke’s Gospel all the resurrection stories happen on the same day. The women and Peter going to the tomb, the two on the way to Emmaus, the appearance to the disciples in Jerusalem, and the ending of the Gospel with the disciples praying in the temple are a single flow of events. They are all part of the same spiritual experience. Each episode is integral to the whole revelation.

These two travelers are not out for an idle stroll.

In Like’s Gospel avoiding Jerusalem is avoiding the true path of Christ. The whole Gospel is a journey toward Jerusalem, the revelation of the cross takes place in Jerusalem, and the story ends in Jerusalem. Walking away from Jerusalem and toward Emmaus means that they are abandoning the “unworldly” power of Christ displayed in his passion and death and embracing the “worldly” power of Roma that executed him.

They are not travelers but deserters, not people on a mission but people walking away from a cause.

What happened to the two on the road is confirmed by the community in Jerusalem. It is not an isolated experience or an offbeat interpretation. The Lord is risen. This designation of Jesus as Lord may carry the weight of his new form of presence.

His resurrected presence is known in the action of breaking the bread.

In the breaking of bread for a world that starves for you: Abide with us, O Lord!

STEWARDSHIP

While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (Luke 24:36)

Christ is with us in all things. His fidelity is the rock that grounds our peace, even when the world around us seems to be standing on its head, as did the disciples’ world, shaken to its core by his dying and rising…

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

April 15, 2012

Please do not disturb the elephant

There is an elephant in the house – a six-ton pachyderm taking up all the room, all the space, all the air.

And nobody in the family says a word.

They tiptoe around it, they squeeze by it, they pretend it doesn’t exist.

But at every family gathering, the elephant is there.

The elephant, of course, is not a physical presence but an emotional one – all 12,000 pounds of it. It’s the disappointment Dad feels, it’s the shame Mom endures, it’s the resentment a child harbors. It’s the indignation of a rigid elder, the harsh judgment of a self-righteous relation.

But as long as nobody says anything, everything will be fine.

Don’t spook the elephant, and no one will be trampled.

Silence, avoidance and denial. Turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to the elephant crushing our souls and we’ll get through dinner.

It’s called keeping peace in the family.

But the ever whelming stench of peanuts never goes away.

Peace that is the merely the absence of conflict, peace that is just the quiet, unchallenged acceptance of dishonesty, cruelty and mistrust is not peace at all.

The peace “given” to us by the Risen Christ is not the passive acquiescence to something we perceive as more powerful or someone more intimidating than ourselves; Christ’s peace is the hard work of loving when it is most difficult to love, of putting aside our own disappointment and doubts for the sake of the other, of forgiving when we are too angry or disappointed to forgive, of reaching out when we expect to be rebuffed or rejected, of continuing to love and support and understand despite our own misgivings and fear.

The Risen One’s gift of peace is centered in no less than Christ himself; to imitate his selflessness, his compassion, his joys in our own hearts and homes.

+ JESUS came and stood in their midst and said to them, “peace be with you.”

(John 20: 19-31)

Joke!!! Photographer’s Mercy

The story is told of a politician who, after receiving the proofs of a picture, was very angry with the photographer. EASTER SUNDAY

THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

April 8, 2012

This funny story is old, but even if you’ve heard it before, you might enjoy it again.

There was an old couple who argued a lot, and they decided to travel before they died. One place they wanted to see was Israel. While they were there, the wife died. When the husband tried to see what arrangements he could make for her funeral, the mortician told him she could be buried in Israel for $2,000 or they could send her body home to the United States, but it would cost $20,000 to transport her. He thought for a moment and said we’ll send her to the United States. A friend asked why he would spend so much money to send her back home. He said, “One time a person rose from the dead here in Israel and I can’t take that chance.”

Our faith tells us one person did indeed rise from the dead, Jesus Christ, and if it weren’t for his resurrection we would never have heard of him. He was a good and holy man who was a wise teacher and a powerful healer but, unlike with other religious leaders, if it weren’t for Jesus’ actual resurrection, his followers would never have had the courage to preach about him to the world.

The challenge of the resurrection; again quoting the letter to the Colossians: “If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.” (Col 3:1-2)

If we want to live new life with Christ in eternity, we must live his new life now.

Hopefully, our Easter celebration will inspire us to leave today with a new resolver to praise the Lord (this is what “Alleluia” means) and to rejoice and be glad because this is the day the Lord has made; this is the day that is a source of hope and salvation for us.

Happy Easter!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION

April 1, 2012

JESUS’ death: A victory over the forces of darkness

From the 1980s to the 1990s, the country of El Salvador has been described as a land full of violence against the poor.

During these years, thousands of Salvadorans, including farmers, teachers, elderly and children were killed, not sparing the innocent.

Among the victims of the regime was a certain Christian name Oscar Romero, an archbishop.

In the exercise of his prophetic ministry, his mouth was unstoppable; it gave voice to the cry against the violence to the poor. He was the outspoken critic of the regime. Treated as an Enemy of the State, he was brutally murdered on March 24, 1980, while celebrating the Holy Mass.

That his death occurred during a Eucharistic celebration has much symbolic value, because it imitated the body and blood of Jesus which he was consecrating, themselves signs of God’s love for the poor, even as Archbishop Romero died defending their cause. But apart from its symbolic value, the death of Oscar Romero is a concretization of what, in the theology of the Gospel of Mark, the death of Christ means for us.

Although Jesus was treated by his enemies as a criminal, and died like one, yet he gave up his life as the faithful Servant of Yahweh.

In Mark’s understanding, the battle with Satan that began in the temptation story (Mark 1:13) ended with the victory of Jesus who, in his crucifixion, was acknowledged as the Son of God (Mark 15:39).

It is of course, not difficult for us, as Christians, to see in the death of Jesus an example to follow… And Archbishop Romero was one of those who understood the exemplary meaning of Jesus’ death.

Like the Eucharist which he celebrated (1Cor 11:26), his death was a proclamation of the death of the Lord. But what is relevant to us is the view that even though Romero died, his death did not mean the triumph of the government which had a hand in the assassination to silence him.

The death of Jesus was a victory over the forces of darkness.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

March 25, 2012

Would you please occupy my room for the night?”

One stormy night many years ago, a man in his forties and his wife from New York entered the lobby of a small hotel in Philadelphia.

Trying to get out of the rain, the couple approached the front desk hoping to get some shelter for the night. “Could you possibly give us a room here?” the husband asked. The manager, a friendly man with a winning smile, looked at the couple and explained that there were three conventions in town. “All of our rooms are taken,” the manager said. “But I can’t send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o’clock in the morning. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room?” It’s not exactly a suite, but it will be good enough to make you folks comfortable for the night.”

When the couple declined, the Philadelphia manager pressed on. “Don’t worry about me; I’ll make out just fine,” the manager told them. So the couple agreed.

As he paid his bill the next morning, the New Yorker said to the manager, “You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel in the United States. May be some day I will build one for you.”

The Manager looked at them and smiled.

The three of them had a good laugh.

As they drove away, the couple agreed that the helpful manager was indeed exceptional, as finding people who are both friendly and helpful isn’t easy.

Two years passed.

The Philadelphia manager had almost forgotten the incident when he receives a letter. It was from the man, who recalled in it that stormy night and enclosed a round-trip to New York so the manager could pay them a visit.

The man from New York met him in airport. He then pointed to a great new building there, a palace of reddish stone, with turrets and watchtowers thrusting up to the sky. “That,” said the New Yorker, “is the hotel I have just built for you to manage.” “You must be joking,” the Philadelphia manager said. “I can assure you I am not,” said the New Yorker, a sly smile playing around his mouth.

The New Yorker’s name was William Waldorf Astor, and the magnificent structure was the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, one of the world’s most glamorous hotels.

The Philadelphia guy who became its first manager was George C. Boldt.

Here is a striking proof of what Jesus tells us in today’s gospel,

If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies it produces much fruit.”

Young George Boldt buried his own comfort and convenience by giving up his room.

His sacrifice sprouted and brought forth the reward of becoming the manager of the most outstanding hotels in the world.

Release this guilty man”

King Frederick II, and Eighteenth-Century King of Prussia, visited a prison in Berlin one day.

The inmates jumped at the opportunity to plead their cases directly to the king.

All except one.

One prisoner sat quietly in the corner. This aroused the king’s curiosity.

The king quieted the other inmates and approached the man in the corner.

“What are you in for?” he asked. “Armed robbery, your honor.” The king asked, “Are you guilty?” “Yes sir,” he answered. “I entirely deserve my punishment.”

The king then gave an order to the guard: “Release this guilty man. I don’t want him corrupting all these innocent people.”

How ironic!

Only when we admit our guilt can that guilt be washed away.

One of the greatest promises of scripture is this one:

“If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

(1 John 1:9)

Repentance is the first step toward new birth mentioned in today’s gospel.

Think for a moment.

Is there some failing in your life that you have never admitted to God?

Being concerned for each other”: the gift of reciprocity.

This “custody of other is in contrast to a mentality that, by reducing life exclusively to its earthly dimension, fails to see it in an eschatological perspective and accepts any moral choice in the name of personal freedom. A society like our can become blind to physical sufferings and to the spiritual and moral demands of life. This must not be the case in the Christian community! The Apostle Paul encourages us to see “the ways which lead to peace and the ways in which we can support one another” for our neighbor’s good, “so that we support one another,” seeking not personal gain but rather “the advantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved” This mutual correction and encouragement in a spirit of humility and charity must be part of the life of the Christian community.”

The Lord’s disciples, united with him through the Eucharist, live in a fellowship that binds them one to another as members of a single body…

(From the message of His Holiness Benedict XVI for Lent 2012)

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
March 11, 2012

“Mother Who Abandoned Son Wins Half of His $300,000 Estate.”

Did you read about a Connecticut Supreme Court case in which the court reluctantly ruled that a Suzanne Benson is entitled to half the estate of her dead son? If the newspapers are correct, this mother abandoned her two-year-old son 13 years ago.
Recently the son was killed in a car/bicycle collision. His dad’s insurance company awarded $300,000 to the son’s estate.
Mrs. Benson showed up after all this time to claim half the money.

Under Connecticut law, if Mrs. Benson had officially terminated her parental responsibility, she could not have profited from the money.
Abandonment of a baby, however, does not constitute formal parental termination.
(“Mother Who Abandoned Son Wins Half of His $300,000 Estate,” The Knoxville News Sentinel (May 10, 1989), Section A.P.7)
So she collected $150,000.

That violates my sense of justice, doesn’t it yours?
It’s not fair. It’s not right. But listen.
There are far worse injustices taking place in our world than that one isolated case.
We all know it’s true.
There are racial injustices, religious injustices, and economic injustice.

In today’s gospel JESUS reacts forcefully against religious injustices.

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.”
(1 Corinthians 1:22-25)

ANNUAL MINISTRIES APPEAL 2012
“The wind blows where it wills.”
Saint John 3:8
Diocese of Monterey
This phrase comes from Jesus’ answer to Nicodemus’ question as to how he can be born again from above. In part, Jesus replies by saying, “The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
In the same way, we know that the ministries supported by the Annual Ministries Appeal touch people in so many different ways as we can see the work they do, but we do not know all of the good God does through them and through the many people touched by those ministries.
The Spirit of God blows through the ministries and takes people in many different directions to build up the Body of Christ in our.
In joining together, we can work together to continue this important work of God…

I am asking you to join together and to allow the Wind to continue to blow through these important ministries to touch the lives of so many in our Diocese from the youngest children to our retired priests and deacons.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Richard J. Garcia, D.D.
Bishop of Monterey

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
March 4, 2012

Transformation from pro-choice to pro-life!

Dr. Peggy Hartshorne, president of Heartbeat International, tells a dramatic story about a woman who glimpsed the mystery of her unborn child.
The young woman was seeking an abortion. She simply could not handle having a baby at this time. But she agreed to an ultrasound. When the baby appeared on the screen, the woman was amazed to see the perfectly formed body, the tiny legs and arms moving inside her womb. But the woman kept saying, “No, no, I have to have an abortion.”
Dr. Hartshorne felt sad. She knew that seventy-five percent of women who see an ultrasound decide to keep their baby – but that a quarter, nevertheless, still have the abortion.
It seemed like this woman would be in that twenty-five percent.
All of sudden, Dr. Hartshorne’s assistant said, “Reach out and take your baby’s hand.” Dr. Hartshorne thought, “Oh, gosh, why is she saying that?” But the woman raised her hand and touched the monitor. As if by some divine cue, the baby stretched out his arm to the exact place of his mom’s hand.  On the screen his tiny fingers met hers.
She kept her baby.

There is a mystery inside each one of us – the mystery of the image of God.
Today’s gospel tells us how three of the apostles saw a glimpse, a tiny glimpse, of who JESUS was.
That would transform them and sustain them through some dark moments following Jesus’ arrest.

“… And he was transfigured, such them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus.”
(Mark 9:2-10)

LENT 2012
“Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works”
(Heb 10:24)
The great commandment of love for one another demand that we acknowledge our responsibility towards those who, like ourselves, are creatures and children of God. Being brothers and sisters in humanity and, in many cases, also in the faith, should help us to recognize in others a true alter ego, infinitely loved by the Lord.
If we cultivate this way of seeing others as our brothers and sisters, solidarity, justice, mercy and compassion will naturally well up in our hearts…
Concern for others entails desiring what is good for them from every point of view: physical, moral and spiritual…
Benedictus PP. XVI

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
FEBRUARY 26, 2012

“Baptize the entire Ford Motor Plant”
Henry Ford

You might have heard the story of the machinist who worked years ago at the original Ford Motor Company plant in Detroit, Michigan.
Over a period of years he had “borrowed” from the factory various can parts and tools which he hadn’t bothered to return.
While the management never cordoned this practice, nothing was ever done about it.
In time, however the “forgetful” machinist experienced a Christian conversion and was baptized. More importantly, the man took his baptism seriously and became a devout believer. The very morning after his baptism, the machinist arrived at work with his pickup truck loaded with all the parts and tools he had taken from the Ford Company over the years. He went to his foreman and explained that he never really meant to steal them and asked to be forgiven.
The foreman was so astonished and impressed by this act that he cabled Henry Ford himself, contacting the auto magnate while he was away visiting a European Ford plant. In his telegram the foreman described the entire event in great detail.
Ford immediately cable back this striking two-line response:
“Dam up the Detroit River.
Baptize the entire Plant!”

Our reading for this First Sunday in Lent focus on the effect our baptism should have on our lives, especially during the Lenten Season.

The primary purpose of Lent is spiritual preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ death on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
The Church tries to achieve this goal by leading her children to “repentance,” a type of conversion.
Repentance leads us to recorder our priorities and changes our valves, ideals and ambitions, with the help of fasting, prayer and mortification.
Hence, the Church ordains fasting and abstaining on assigned days of Lent. All Lenten observances are also intended to lead us to our annual solemn renewal of baptismal vows on Holy Saturday.
Through baptism we are called to live justly, to love God with all our being, to love our neighbor as ourselves, and to build the kingdom of God by our acts of Charity.

“Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.
(Psalm 25: 10)

LENT 2012
“Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works”
(Heb 10:24)
The responsibility towards our brothers and sisters.
This first aspect is an invitation to be “concerned”: the Greek verb used here is ‘katanoein, which means to scrutinize, to be attentive, to observe carefully and take stock of something.
So the verb which introduces our exhortation tells us to look at others, first of all at Jesus, to be concerned for one another, and not to remain isolated and indifferent to the fate of our brothers and sisters.
All too often, however, our attitude is just the opposite: an indifference and disinterest born of selfishness and masked as a respect for “privacy”. Today too, the Lord’s voice summons all of us to be concerned for one another. Even today God asks to be “guardians” of our brothers and sisters
(Gen 4:9), to establish relationship based on mutual consideration and attentiveness to the well-being, the integral well-being of others…
The Pope Benedict XVI

In their statement they say:

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dr. Murray’s faith in action

Secular magazines have begun to notice that faith can make a difference in people lives. For example, Family Circle carried a story recently about Dr. Joseph E. Murray performed the first successful human organ transplant operation on December 23, 1954.

Dr. Murray devoted himself to unlocking the secrets of successful organ transplantation after serving as an Army surgeon in World War II.

In addition to perfecting organ transplantation techniques, Dr. Murray has also spent part of his career performing plastic surgery on those with facial deformities. He has traveled around the world, offering his services as a plastic surgeon in some of the poorest nations.

In 1990, Dr. Murray was recognized for his work and awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine.

An observant Catholic, Dr. Murray begins each morning with the prayer that “all my acts are consistent with being the creature of a loving Creator.”

According to Family Circle Joseph Murray’s faith impacted complete strangers.

Today’s gospel tells us how the faith of his friends brought healing to paralytic man.

A man saved by the faith of his friends. It is the faith of the friends who have brought the paralytic to Jesus that is highlighted. It is the faith of the community being exercised on behalf of an individual.

For example, there are many who are saved by the faith of their parents.

When Augustine was living a reckless and immoral life, his devout mother came to ask the help of her saintly bishop Ambrose.

“It is impossible,” he assured her, “that the child of such prayers and tears should perish.”

They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.”

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 12, 2012

St. Francis of Assisi and the Leper

Today’s Scripture lessons teach us that the sick and the maimed are, for us, not to be objects of scorn, but potential reservoirs of God’s mercy.
St. Francis of Assisi, for instance understood this. At one time in his life, he had a terrible fear of lepers. Then one day when he was out for a walk, he heard the warning bell that lepers were required to ring in the Middle Ages. When a leper emerged from a dump of trees, St. Francis saw that he was horribly disfigured. Half of his nose had been eaten away; his hands were stubs without fingers and his lips were oozing white pus.
Instead of giving in to his fears, Francis ran forward, embraced the leper and kissed him.
Francis’ life was never the same after that episode. He had found a new relationship with God, a new sensitivity to others, and a new energy for his ministry.

All three reading today contain the Christian teaching on the need for social acceptance even when people are different from us.
They also tell us that it is purity or holiness of soul coming from God that cleanses our lives.

In today’s Gospel Jesus’ identification with the leper: According to some Father of the Church, one reason Jesus promptly responded to the leper’s cry in today’s Gospel story, ignoring the Mosaic Law prohibiting touching a leper and thus becoming ritually unclean, is that he identified himself with the man’s condition.  Jesus dramatically identified himself with the sufferer in the total rejection and isolation waiting for him.

The irony here is that Jesus risked becoming “unclean” Himself in order to make the leper clean.

Just as he stretched out his hand to the leper and touched him and made him whole, Jesus stretched out his hands on the cross to make us whole.

“I turn to you, Lord, in the time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation!”
(Psalm 32: 1)

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 5, 2012

Stop blaming others and start doing good.

There is an old and funny little anecdote that goes something like this. An elderly man who was quite ill said to his wife, “You know, Sarah, you’ve always been with me – through the good and the bad. Like the time I lost my job – you were right there by my side. And when the war came and I enlisted – you became a nurse so that you could be with me. Then I was wounded and you were there, Sarah, right by my side. Then the Depression hit and we had nothing – but you were there with me. And now here I am, sick as a dog, and, as always, you’re right beside me. You know something, Sarah – you’re bad luck!”

There is a part of us that is tempted to look for somebody to blame for all the things that go wrong in our lives.
More often than not, we blame the very people we once looked up to for an answer.
Today’s first reading from the book of Job is a futile attempt to answer the perennial question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?”
The gospel show us how Jesus kept himself busy alleviating the pain and suffering around Galilee by his preaching and healing ministry rather than by pondering on universal solutions for the problem of worldwide evil.

The readings today challenge us to go courageously beyond people’s expectations by doing good as Jesus did, instead of brooding over pain and suffering in the world that we cannot end.
They invite us to explore the importance of work in our lives and to learn a lesson in work ethics from Job, Paul and Jesus.
While the gospel presents Jesus enthusiastically preparing for his second day’s missionary work, the first reading details Job’s attitude in striking contrast to Jesus’.
Pointing out the spontaneous response of Peter’s mother-in-law after she had been healed by Jesus –namely, “waiting on them at table”- today’s gospel teaches us that true discipleship means getting involved in giving selfless service to others.

Christ took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

January 29, 2012

Jesus taught and acted with authority

Kenneth L. Woodward writing in Newsweek magazine gives us a glimpse of what Christ’s coming meant to the world.

He writes, “Whether we like it or not, Christ’s life radically changed human culture throughout the world… Before Jesus came, the world was ruled by the ‘might make right’ theory. But Jesus’ teaching about humility and turning the other cheek redefined our views of human character, of war, of masculinity. Jesus’ commitment to the poor, to women and children opened the way for civil rights and equality for women.

Marriages became more equitable. Also, it was a common practice in Roman families to kill female babies. Sociologist Rodney Stark notes that evidence exists that among at least 600 ancient Roman families, less than a dozen had more than one daughter.

But Christians valued the life of all people whether male or female, and prohibited the killing of any children.”

(“2000 Years of Jesus,” March 29, 1999, p.55)

But the revolution is not complete. We still live in a pre-Christian world. There is still too much hatred, too much violence, too much debasement of human dignity. If you are comfortable in Jesus’ presence, you simply do not see him as he really is.

The common theme of today’s readings is divine authority –reflected by the prophets of the Old Testament in their messages, by the apostles, including St. Paul, in the New Testament in their writing and teaching and by Jesus in his teaching and healing ministry.

In today’s gospel, Mark describes one sample Sabbath day of Jesus’ public life. He joined in public worship in the synagogue as a practicing Jew, he healed the sick, he drove out evil spirits and he prayed privately.

Since anyone could be invited to explain the Holy Scripture in synagogue worship, Jesus was invited.

People immediately noticed that Jesus spoke with authority and healed with divine power. Jesus used his real, or authentic, authority to teach, empower, liberate, and heal other.

The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light; on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen.

Let us be shinning ourselves as we go together to meet and to receive with the aged Simon the light whose brilliance is eternal.

Rejoicing with Simeon, let us sing hymn of thanksgiving to God, the Father of the light, who sent the true light to dispel the darkness and to give us all a share in his splendor.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

January 15, 2012

We have found the MESSIAH: JESUS CHRIST, who brings us truth and grace!

Eureka, Eureka.”

According to legend, the ruler Hieros II asked the Greek philosopher Archimedes to find a method for determining whether a crown was made of pure gold or of gold mixed with silver.

One day when Archimedes stepped into his bath and noticed that the water rose as he sat down, he ran out of the house naked shouting, “Eureka! Eureka!

(= “I’ve found it!”).

The method to determine whether or not a crown was pure gold, discovered by Archimedes in his bathtub, was to compare its weight to its volume.

If one had one pound of gold and one pound of silver and submerged them in water, the silver would make the water rise higher than the gold, because it is less dense than gold, and therefore large in volume, displacing more water.

Archimedes compared the volume of water displaced by the suspected crown with that displaced by a pure gold crown of equal weight.

Archimedes did not “find” this truth by searching after it – although he might have spent days thinking about a solution to the problem. His “find” came as an unexpected surprise.

He had probably noticed the water in the bathtub rising hundreds of times before, but its significance didn’t “click” in his brain until that “Eureka” moment.

Today’s Gospel describes how John discovered JESUS as the Lamb of God and how Andrew, Simon, and Nathaniel discovered him as the “Promised Messiah” quite unexpectedly.

JESUS was their “Eureka.”

John the Baptist gave testimony to JESUS by pointing Him out as the Lamb of God.

Andrew called Him the Messiah, and

Nathaniel called JESUS Rabbi, Son of God, and King of Israel.

JESUS completed the epiphany declaring Himself the Son of Man.

Our Christian call is to live and die like the Lamb of God.

Our call is to rebuild broken lives.

Our call is to bear witness to the Lamb of God.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

January 8, 2012

All nations are invited to sing the Lord’s praises for they have been called to hear the good news and worship the long-awaited Messiah and King with the gift of their lives.

Artabam the fourth of the Magi

In 1895, Henry van Dyke wrote the “Story of the Other Wise Man,” fourth wise men see the baby Jesus.

But Artaban did make it in time to save one of the Holy Innocents by bribing a soldier.

For 33 years Artaban searched for Jesus. He did not find him. But all the while the Fourth wise man fed the hungry, helped the poor.

Then one day in Jerusalem Artaban saw the “King of the Jews” being crucified.

He started to offer as ransom. But then he saw a girl being sold into slavery to pay family debs. Artaban gave his pearl to buy freedom for the girl.

Suddenly the earth quake as Jesus died on the cross and a stone struck Artaban. Dying, he heard a voice saying: “When you helped the least of my children, you helped me. Meet me in heaven!”

Artaban, the fourth of the magi, had been making God present in his community for years by helping others. God asks each of us on the feast of Epiphany to be the fourth of the Magi by becoming God’s epiphanies, making His love present in the world around us by our acts of love and kindness.

The word Epiphany, which means appearance, manifestation or showing forth, marks Jesus’ first appearance to the Gentiles.

“Epiphany” refers to God’s Self-revelation as well as to the revelation of Jesus as His Son.

Epiphany is an older celebration than the feast of Christmas, having originated in the East in the late second century.

We have seen his star in the East, and have come with gifts to adore the Lord.

STEWARDSHIP

You have set on his head a crown of pure gold.” (Psalm 21:4)

Traditionally, Epiphany celebrates three manifestations of God in Christ: to the Magi, at the baptism in the Jordan, and at Cana. The liturgies of this season often present the incarnation under the imagery of a marriage between divinity and humanity in Jesus Christ, the wise and just King, greater than Solomon.

THE OCTAVE DAY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD

MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

January 1, 2012

We seek GOD’s blessings as did MARY, Because of her SON; we can confidently call GOD, “ABBA”!

The beginning of a new year, God’s gift to humanity, prompts me to extend to all, with great confidence and affection, my heartfelt good wishes that this time now before us may be marked concretely by justice and peace.

With what attitude should we look to the New Year? We find a very beautiful image in Psalm 130. The Psalmist says that people of faith wait for the Lord “more than those who watch for the morning” (v.6); they wait for him with firm hope because they know that he will bring light, mercy, salvation.

This waiting was born of the experience of the Chosen People, who realized that God taught them to look at the world in its truth and not to be overwhelmed by tribulation. I invite you to look to 2012 with this attitude of confident trust.

It is true that the year now ending has been marked by a rising sense of frustration at the crisis looming over society, the world of labor and the economy, a crisis whose roots are primarily cultural and anthropological. It seems as if a shadow has fallen over our time, preventing us from clearly seeing the light of day.

In this shadow, however, human hearts continue to wait for the dawn of which the Psalmist speaks. Because this expectation is particularly powerful and evident in young people, my thoughts turn to them and to the contribution which they can and must make to society…..

All you men and women throughout the world, who take to heart the cause of peace: peace is not a blessing already attained, but rather a goal to which each and all of us must aspire. Let us look with greater hope to the future; let us encourage one another on our journey; let us work together to give our work a more humane and fraternal face; and let us feel a common responsibility towards present and future generations, especially in the task of training them to be people of peace and builders of peace. With these thoughts I offer my reflections and I appeal to everyone: let us pool our spiritual, moral and material resources for the great goal of “educating young people in justice and peace”.

From the Vatican, 8 December 2011

BENEDICTUS PP. XVI

Today a light will shine upon us, for the Lord is born for us; and he will be called Wondrous God, Prince of peace, and Father of future ages: and his reign will be without end.” (cf. Isaiah 9:1, 5)
