THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH

December 28, 2008

Family life is rooted in the unconditional love of God as witnessed by the Holy Family.

God blesses the faith of Abraham and Sarah in their son, Isaac.

The child Jesus and his parents are blessed by Simeon.

"The family is the privileged setting where every person learns to give and receive love… The family is an intermediate institution between individuals and society, and nothing can completely take its place… The family is a necessary good for people, an indispensable foundation for society and a great and lifelong treasure for couples. It is a unique good for children, who are meant to be the fruit of the love, of the total and generous self giving of their parents… The family is also a school which enables men and women to grow to the full measure of their humanity… 'O God, who in the Holy Family left us a perfect model of family life lived in faith and obedience to your will, help us to be examples of faith and love for your commandments'" (Pope Benedict XVI)

STEWARDSHIP

My eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the people. (Luke 2:30)

The paradox of Christmas is threaded through these days: the Alpha and Omega, the light of revelation to the Gentiles, the glory of the Lord, appears in the humble form of a child. Only the shepherds from the hills and the old people in the temple know when they see him that they have see God's promise kept in the flesh. In these unexpected worshipers, branches considered bare by people of importance begin to blossom with a joy that cannot be measured by the world's standards.

Liturgy Spotlight…

Sunday is a day of joy, rest, and solidarity in community for all Christians. The true source of joy is the utter conviction that the risen LORD is present to and within the gathered faithful.

You Can Help Your Marriage –

Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue… or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? At the beginning of the New Year, we can hear God saying not only in Isaiah but in our own lives as well:

"Come now; let us talk this over…

Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool"

(Isaiah 1:18)

Jesus, too, spoke of this God, this Father of his, who heals, consoles, forgives, and encourages us to begin again. Jesus presents this Father as a deeply loving one who always gives his people another chance, God who understands the human heart, who picks us up and dusts us off when we fall into the ashes of our weaknesses. This God's love is everlasting. He encourages us by holding out a new year like an unmarred, snow-covered land, saying: "Look, it's new. It's clean. It's fresh. Let's walk it together. Do not keep looking back. You cannot undo the past, but you can walk the present with me. Treasure my love for you and believe in my presence with you. I have so many wonderful surprises if you will but begin anew on the journey and rely on me instead of just on yourself."

I believe that this is what our God speaks to us. This is God's "Happy New Year 2009" to us. Instead of simply working hard all by ourselves on some resolution that we hope will change us into better people, we ought to come before our winter God and offer ourselves to him, believing in his mercy, healing, and refreshment, trusting that his touch is what we most need, and that this touch is a pure, free gift. We do need to take action in our lives and to try to break old habits and attitudes that keep us from gospel living but we cannot force this to happen; indeed, it cannot happen without the grace of God active in our hearts. We can only be open, ready, waiting, yearning, and believing that God yearns the same for us and will grace our needy lives if we are receptive to the gift being offered to us.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 21, 2008

Mary visits Elizabeth

When the angel revealed his message to the Virgin Mary he gave her a sign to win her trust. He told her of the motherhood of an old and barren woman to show that God is able to do all that he wills.

When she hears this Mary sets out for the hill country. She does not disbelieve God's word; she feels no uncertainty over the message or doubt about the sign. She goes eager in purpose, dutiful in conscience, hastening for joy.

Filled with God, where would she hasten but to the heights? The Holy Spirit does not proceed by slow, laborious efforts. Quickly, too, the blessings of her coming and the Lord's presence are made clear: as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting the child leapt in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Notice the contrast and the choice of words. Elizabeth is the first to hear Mary's voice, but John is the first to be aware of grace. She hears with the ears of the body, but he leaps for joy at the meaning of the mystery. She is aware of Mary's presence, but he is aware of the Lord's: a woman aware of a woman's presence, the forerunner aware of the pledge of our salvation.

The child leaps in the womb; the mother is filled with the Holy Spirit, but not before her son. Once the son has been filled with the Holy Spirit, he fills his mother with the same Spirit. John leaps for joy, and the spirit of Mary rejoices in her turn. When John leaps for joy Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit, but we know that though Mary's spirit rejoices she does not need to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit after conceiving John, while Mary is filled with the Holy Spirit before conceiving the Lord. Elizabeth says: Blessed are you because you have believed.

Let Mary's soul be in each of you to proclaim the greatness of the Lord. Let her spirit be in each to rejoice in the Lord. Christ has only one mother in the flesh, but we all bring forth Christ in faith. Every one receives the Word of God if only it keeps chaste, remaining pure and free from sin, its modesty undefiled.

(From a commentary on Luke by Saint Ambrose bishop)

Happy are you who have believed, because the Lord's promises will be accomplished in you.

Luke 1:45

STEWARDSHIP

Today in the town of David a savior has been born to you; he is Christ and Lord.

Luke 2:11

A stranger ruler, an unexpected judge: the Wonder-Counselor, God-hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace, born as a child among the world's unimportant people. From the beginning, the Savior upsets every standard by which the unredeemed world has ruled itself. To celebrate Christmas in truth is to allow our eyes to be opened to God's view of reality.

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 14, 2008

"Rejoice in the Lord," for as miserable as life can seem at times, the reality is that God has clothed us "with a robe of salvation" that heals all our poverty, our broken hearts, our bondage.

"He has mercy on those who fear him," that is, those who fear only one thing: losing their relationship with the Lord. Therefore, "be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Even though in the troubles of life you may not recognize him, "the one who calls you is faithful."

"I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord;

I repeat, what I want is your happiness.

Let your tolerance be evident to everyone:

 The Lord is very near."

Philippians 4:4-5

STEWARDSHIP

He was a burning and shinning lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light.                                             (John 5:35)

John holds the lamp by which we see Jesus as the light of the world. He does not allow himself to cast any shadow on the good news of the coming he proclaims: he stands out of the way and draws all the attention to the promised Christ. In Christ, not in ourselves, lies the source of all our joy in this Advent season – and always!

Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with Your strong yet tender care.

The Present of Presence

God sent a present into the world, the gift of a loving presence name JESUS. The gospel stories indicate that Jesus gave few material things to people. What he gave most was his personal presences, gifts that were treasures of the heart: belief in self, inner healing, peace of mind, compassion, forgiveness, dignity, and justice. This loving presence lives on in us and is the central focus of Christmas gift-giving.

Sharing the gift of personal presence means that we see ourselves as a gift holding the goodness of Jesus who is Emmanuel, God-with-us. Like Jesus, we can give from our inner abundance, gift from the heart. Moments lovingly spent with another through prayer or through personal presence carry more beauty and have more endurance than anything material we could give. Great Love we have known in the person of Jesus: our care and concern, our hope, our joy, our understanding and forgiveness, our kindness, our patience?

When I think of my hurried pace of life, I see myself as deeply entrenched in my western culture. I look at how Advent gets lost in "the Christmas rush." The messages are all around me: "Buy this and you will be happy; buy that and you will prove your love." Sharing presence is hard to do in a culture that keeps promoting material things as a sign of how much we love others. Sharing presence is difficult in an environment that encourages us to be as busy as possible so that we will be rich, successful, and important- and able to buy more things.

When we are busy, rushed, and pressed it is easy to miss awareness and union with those around us and with those in our larger world. Advent is a good season to be more deliberate in sharing the present of our presence every day. It may be through a phone call, a letter, a visit, or through the bonding of prayer as we focus love and attention to ward those who need the strength of God to be with them.

Make your list for "being with" others during this days before Christmas in order to deliberately choose "being" over "doing." When the feast of Christmas arrives may you be more aware of the power of Emmanuel's presence within you.

Out of the ordinary by Joyce Rupp

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

December 7, 2008

"The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ" is not a book, but a presence: the presence of the Son of God in human flesh. The beginning of the Gospel promises a new beginning for those aching to hear someone "speak tenderly." Comfort will come; truth that is meaning which never decay will "spring out of the earth" – out of what we see and touch every day. We hasten that day by awaiting this presence eagerly. "Repentance" means changing to please the one who loves us into happiness.

The voice in the wilderness

The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the path of our God. The prophecy makes clear that it is to be fulfilled, not in Jerusalem but in the wilderness: it is there that the glory of the Lord is to appear, and God's salvation is to be made know to all human being.

It was in the wilderness that God's saving presence was proclaimed by John the Baptist, and there that God's salvation was seen. The words of his prophecy were fulfilled when Christ and his glory were made manifest to all: after his baptism the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove rested on him, and the Father's voice was heard, bearing witness to the Son: This is my beloved Son, listen to him.

Prepare the way of the Lord: the way is the preaching of the Gospel, the new message of consolation, ready to bring to all human being the knowledge of God's saving power…

From bishop Isaiah by Eusebius of Ceasarea.

Stewardship

He who obeys me dwells in security, in peace, without fear of harm. (Prv 1:33)

What is so new about the promised "mountain of the Lord" is not that the wolf and the lamb are both there, but that the wolf remains a wolf and the lamb a lamb, and yet they dwell together without harm or hurt in God's kingdom. Under God's rule, conversion and obedience do not mean the loss of identity but the discovery of our true identity as one in Christ.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

November 30, 2008

ADVENT has a two-fold character: as a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ's first coming to us is remembered, and as a season when that remembrance directs our mind and heart to await Christ's second coming at the end of time.

Advent thus is a period of devout and joyful expectation.

David acknowledges his sin and experiences the Lord forgiveness.

The sinful woman is forgiven by Jesus because of her great love.

He loves us and gave himself up for us.

YEAR 2008-2009 B- MARK'S GOSPEL

The shortest and earliest of the four Gospels in the Bible (it's a mere sixteen chapters long), the Gospel of MARK provides a fast-paced story of the events of Jesus' public ministry. The Gospel dates from about 70 AD, nearly four decades after Jesus' death and resurrection. Mark's Gospel is unique and abbreviated, with no story of the birth of Jesus and no account of the resurrection. It is filled with so much imagery of suffering, that it is often difficult for us to hear it. The feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist is celebrated on April 25, and Christian art often portrays Mark with a lion by his side.

Mark 13:33-37

Servants Await Owner's Return

Be alert!!!

A story comes to us from Eastern mysticism:

A monk asked, "Abbot, what has God's wisdom taught you? Did you become divine?"

"Not at all."

"Did you become a saint?"

"No, as you can clearly see."

"What then, O Abbot?"

"I became awake!"

The abbot might have been reading Mark: "Be on your guard, stay awake…"

What is there in our daily life that shows that we are looking forward to Jesus' coming?

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING

November 23, 2008

The Lord Jesus is our shepherd.

At the end, at this coming, He will hand over the kingdom to His Father.

He will "judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats", between those who have lived their lives for others, and those who have lived for themselves.

Final Judgment

We will be judged on how we loved our brothers and sisters.

The Parable of the Last Judgment (adaptation):

For I was hungry, and you were obese; Thirsty and you were watering your lawn;

A stranger and you called the police and were glad to see me taken away;

Naked and you were saying, "I don't have a thing to wear – I must get some new clothes tomorrow;

Ill and you asked, "Is it contagious?"

In prison and you said, "That's where your kind belongs."

The story is told of Martin of Tours who was a Roman soldier and a Christian. One cold winter, as he was riding into the city, a poor beggar stopped him and asked him for alms. Although Martin had no money, he was moved with compassion for the poor man who stood shivering in the cold. Martin gave him what he had. Taking off his soldier's coat, worn and frayed though it was, he cut it in two and gave half of it to the beggar. That night, Martin had a dream. In his dream he saw heaven and all of the angels and Jesus in the midst of them.

Jesus was wearing half of a Roman soldier's cloak. One of the angels said to him, "Master, why are you wearing that battered old cloak? Who gave it to you?" And Jesus answered softly; "My servant Martin gave it to me."

"What you do to the least of these, you do to me." Does this describe us? Are we glad to know the meaning of these words? Why?

No one can escape the coming of the thief. A burglar broke into a New York firm that manufactures burglar-proof glass by smashing a glass door panel. "It never occurred to us," said the firm's president "to put our own burglar-proof glass in our own door."

What are your dominant talents? Are you using them to benefit others, as befits a disciple of Jesus?

Blessed are those who fear the Lord!

Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me bears much fruit. Alleluia, alleluia.

Give her a reward of her labors, and let her works praise her at the cite gates. (Prv 31:31)

God's faithful people, women and men alike, praise God by their lives of faithful, often unsung labor as they put their gifts to use in the service of family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. Their reward is assured, through love, not reward, and is their motive.

Dedication of the Basilicas of Peter and Paul Tuesday November 18th

Around 330 Constantine built a basilica over the tomb of St. Peter. Reconstruction began in the 14th c. and the present basilica of St. Peter was consecrated 18 Nov. 1626 by Pope Urban VIII. The construction of St. Paul's on the Via Ostiense was begun by Valentinian II in 386, taking the place of a smaller church built by Constantine. Destroyed by fire in 1823, the new basilica was consecrated 10 Dec. 1854 by Pope Pius IX who joined in one solemn celebration the dedication of these two basilicas.

O gracious God, who so generously lavishes our lives with goodness, create in our hearts a deep center of gratitude, a center that grows so strong in its thanksgiving that sharing freely of our treasures becomes the norm and the patter of our existence. May we always be grateful for your reaching into our lives with surprises of joy, growth, and unearned love. Amen

(Fresh Bread by Joyce Rupp)

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away".

Humanly speaking, the word, my human word, is almost nothing in reality, a breath. As soon as it is pronounced it disappears. It seems to be nothing. But already the human word has incredible power. Words create history; words form thoughts, the thoughts that create the word. It is the word that forms history, reality. Furthermore, the Word of God is the foundation of everything, it is the true reality.

Wednesdays during December – 3rd, 10th & 17th at 7:00 pm – We will be reading & listening to the Word of God together, because Advent is the time to wait for the Word of God to become flesh. Please Join Me!!!

THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME

November 9, 2008

The water flowing from the temple, the dwelling place of the Lord, brings forth life and growth.

Jesus is the living sanctuary and we his living body in the Spirit.

Today marks the anniversary of the dedication of the cathedral Church of Rome, on land owned by the Laterani family, by Pope Sylvester I, 9 November 324. Honored as the Episcopal seat of the pope as bishop of Rome, it is the "mother and head of all churches of Rome and the world"; residence of the pope from the 4th c. until their moving to Avignon (1309); site of five ecumenical councils; dedicated to the Savior, later to John the Baptist.

The anniversary of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, which was erected by the Emperor Constantine, has been observed on this day since the twelfth century. This feast was at first observed only in Rome but later in honor of the basilica, which is called the mother church of Christendom, the celebration was extended to the whole Latin Church. This action was taken as a sign of devotion to and of unity with the Chair of Peter which, as Saint Ignatius of Antioch wrote, "Presides over the whole assembly of charity."

We have all been made temple of God through baptism.

THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

(ALL SOULS DAY)

November 2, 2008

The souls of the just are in God's hands.

Christ, the Good Shepherd, died for us while we were still sinners.

He is the resurrection and the life.

Rooted in ancient Christian tradition (2nd c. and Tertullian), St. Odilo of Cluny (1 January) established a memorial of all the faithful departed in 988. It was accepted in Rome in the 13th c.

Death is going home to God

Death is going home, yet people are afraid of what will come so they do not want to die. If we do, if there is no mystery, we will not be afraid. There is also the question of conscience- "I could have done better." Very often as we live, so we die. Death is nothing but a continuation of life, the completion of life. The surrendering of the human body. But the heart and the soul live forever. They do not die. Every religion has got eternity-another life; this life is not the end; people who believe it is, fear death. If it was properly explained that death was nothing but going home to God, then there would be no fear.

Something beautiful

I am very sure that all those people who have died with us are in heaven. They are really saints. They are in the presence of God.

It may be that they were not wanted on this earth but they are very beloved children of God.

Death is something beautiful; it means going home. Naturally, we feel lonely for that person. But it is a very beautiful thing: a person has gone home to God.

Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. (Mt. 18:19)

The commemoration of All Souls is rooted in the Church's strong conviction that we, the living, have a serious responsibility in love to accompany with prayer those who have died but who must yet complete the purificatory preparation every human being needs to be able to dwell in the all-encompassing love of God.

From the Bishop Richard J. Garcia

Proposition 8 proposes a California Constitutional Amendment stating that, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

While this is a sensitive issue in many of our communities, it is my responsibility to remind our faithful of the teaching of the Church regarding marriage:

God himself is the author of marriage. The vocation to marriage is written in the very nature of man and woman as they came from the hand of the Creator. Marriage is not a purely human institution despite the many variations it may have undergone through the centuries in different cultures, social structures, and spiritual attitudes. The well-being of the individual person and of both human and Christian society is closely bound up with the healthy state of conjugal and family life.

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 19, 2008

The Lord is king and there is no other.

We are to render to God, therefore, fitting praise and service, as is God's due.

God's word to us, in turn, is a matter of power and strength, to be lived with conviction of heart.

"Pay Tribute to Caesar?"

Matthew 22:15-21

We are to use the goods of this world to further God's Kingdom.

John Wesley's three-point sermon, in which his first point was "Get all you can." To this, an old rich miser said, "Amen." Next Wesley said, "Keep all you can." Again, the miser, said "Amen." Then the preacher said, "Give all you can." And the selfish man said, "What a shame to spoil a good sermon."

On the government side, we have such quips as Arthur Godfrey saying, "I'm proud to be paying taxes in the U.S. The only thing is, I could be just as proud for half the money." Or Will Rogers, who said, "The income tax has made more liars out of the American people than golf has." And Mortimer Caplan, former IRS director, saying, "There is one difference between a tax collector and a taxidermist—the taxidermist leaves the hide."

Do we have our priorities straight about money or values? Have we ever thought of tithing? If not, why not?

TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 12, 2008

The Lord invites us to a banquet, one of the favorite images of messianic times.

The banquet is spread before us and can fully satisfy our needs, yet how often have we refused the Lord's invitation to share in the riches prepared for us?

Wedding Guest without a white Robe

God gives us gratis The Robe of Grace

Television journalist Hugh Downs and his wife once attended a function in Washington. When the time came to return to New York, they discovered that their flight had been cancelled due to bad weather. Downs immediately called the front desk and was informed that they could catch a five o'clock train, which was leaving in 45 minutes. Mrs. Downs was showering, and to save time, Hugh hurriedly packed all their belongings, called the bell captain, and asked that that the bags be rushed right over to the station and put on the train. A bellhop came immediately and got them. Five minutes later, Mrs. Downs stepped out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel. "Dear," she asked, "would you please hand me my green dress?"

Will we be ready, and wearing the white robe of grace?

October 15 TERESA OF AVILA, Virgin and Doctor 1515-1582

If Christ Jesus dwells in a man as his friend and noble leader, that man can endure all things, for Christ helps and strengthens us and never abandons us. He is a true friend. And I clearly see that if we expect to please him and receive an abundance of his graces, God desires that these graces must come to us from the hands of Christ, through his most sacred humanity, in which God takes delight.

Families make faith a priority!

One of the best gifts parents can give their children is the habit of praying throughout the day. Yet the hectic pace of family life often means that prayer gets lost in the shuffle. Here are five ways that families might add more prayer to their day. Start by picking the one or two that call your attention and see how it goes. Remember, even your desire to pray more is a prayer.

1 Start the day with prayer - Each morning while on your knees retrieving your footwear, say a quick prayer offering the whole day to God.

2 Give a minute to prayer in the car - Many families spend a lot of time in the family auto.

3 Keep special intentions in mind Everyone keeps that special intention in mind throughout the day.

4 Pray at every meal

5 Pray when people or events upset you - A quick "Help me, God" is sufficient.

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

October 5, 2008

The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel.

At vintage time the master will return to receive the harvest.

May we bear fruit in plenty, and be pleasing in his sight by living lives that are marked by love and respect.

The Icon of the Presentation of the Lord

We have in the Parish the special Icon of the feast The Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, also the "Feast of the Meeting."

We see Mary the mother of Jesus, Joseph, and Simeon was an upright and devout man, Anna was a prophetess and Baby Jesus.

The Icon of "The Meeting" is the feast of the Parish of Christ Child Church.

The Painting of the Parish with

"The Nunc Dimittis."

The new of the Parish is the beautiful, wonderful, inspiring of the "Painting of the Parish and the Canticle of Simeon according to the Gospel of Saint Luke 2:29-32.

The paint is in union, and eco of the Icon.

We have this holy art, because one member of the parish created it for us. He worked for many hours, days and months on this painting. It is "maravillosa" paint and an opportunity for all of us to pray and pray the prayer of the Parish.

Please give thanks to God and the faithful brother who created this painting for us.

Christ is the light of the nations and the glory of Israel

Lord, now you let your servant go in peace; your word has been fulfilled:

My own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of every people:

A light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

October 7 Our Lady of the Rosary.

Praying the Rosary with Mary as a Believer!

Jesus Christ should be as a book always opened before us from which we are to learn all that is necessary to know.

The Rosary or prayer beads are familiar aids to prayer. Originally all forms of beads served as a reminder to follow the exhortation to pray constantly.

The Rosary belongs among the finest and most praiseworthy traditions of Christian contemplation.

John Paul II refers to the Rosary as "A compendium of the Gospel. And he quotes Paul VI to describe how the Rosary is a Gospel prayer and Christological prayer.

As the Rosary developed in the middle Ages, much of the core of the Scriptures, the life and teachings of Jesus, was omitted, with concentration on his birth, the mysteries of Christ's public ministry and sufferings, death, and resurrection.

Each of these mysteries is a revelation of the Kingdom now present in the very person of Jesus.

Pray the Rosary in your home!!!

THANK YOU!

Brothers and sisters, you are the most wonderful people and so very generosity in many ways both to the Parish and myself.

You showed your faith, hope and love last Sunday in honor of my birthday and in the "mole" of the Parish.

I do not have enough words to say thank you and I am very honored. Only in my poor prayer to God for you and your family. God reward you all with the best for you.

Thank you! Muchas gracias! Fr. Eugenio.

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

September 28, 2008

Jesus was obedient to the Father, even to death on a cross.

We need never fear if we turn away from the path of virtue for the Lord is ever ready to forgive us, if we but repent.

Remember, The Lord's compassion and kindnesses are from of old.

One Son Obeys, the Other Doesn't

Out actions speak louder than our words.

A survey was distributed during a worship service one Sunday morning. Among the questions was, "Do you think there should be an evening Bible Study?" The young pastor was overwhelmed at the response. Over fifty persons indicated that there should be an evening Bible study. The elated pastor began making plans. A day or two later, the wise, experienced lay leader came to visit the pastor. Gently he advised the young man that he had asked the wrong question. Instead of asking, "Do you think there should be a Bible study?" the pastor should have asked, "Are you willing to attend an evening Bible study?" A second questionnaire was issued. This time the question was, "Are you willing to attend Bible study?" The result was quite different from the week before. This time only twelve persons indicated that they would be willing to attend.

September 29 Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, archangels

The angels, wherever they may be sent, never stop gazing upon God. In the same way a virtuous person, as much as he can, always keeps the memory of God in his heart.

September 30 Saint Jerome

Show me, Lord your mercy and delight my heart with it. I am the sheep who wandered into the wilderness. Seek after me, and bring me home again to your fold. Do with me what you will, that all the days of my life I may bide by you, and praise you, with all those who are in heaven with you for all eternity. Amen.

October 1 Saint Thérese of Lisieux

Look at his adorable face. Look at his glazed and sunken eye. Look at his wounds. Look Jesus in the face. There, you will see how he loves us.

October 2 Guardian Angels

Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God's love entrusts me here, ever this day, be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide.

THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

September 14, 2008

"Just as Moses lifted up the serpent, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."

"God highly exalted him" and made him Lord!

How unforgettable are His deeds!

Today's feast celebrates a double anniversary. In Jerusalem, Constantine erected a round church, the Anastasis, above the empty grave of Jesus, and a basilica, the Martyrium; in the square between the two churches, a shrine, Calvarium, marking the place of the crucifixion. Dedicated in 335, they were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The present church of the Holy Sepulcher was built by the Crusaders in 1149. Today also commemorated the discovery of the Lord's cross by the empress, Saint Helena 18 August, in 320.

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because, by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world!

STEWARDSHIP

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (Gal. 6:14)

The cross, instrument of torture and death, raised aloft as a sign of glory, continues to confound the wisdom of this world. God's work of salvation stands human expectations on their head: humility is exaltation, wounds are healing, and death is life.

THE SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION

The sacraments of Christian initiation –Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist – lay the foundations of every Christian life.

Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening and the Eucharist which nourishes the disciple with Christ's Body and Blood for his transformation in Christ.

If you have not had these sacraments, please contact Fr. Eugenio who will be very happy to help you to receive and feel the full life of Christ in you! - Age irrelevant!

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

September 7, 2008

May our hearts not be hardened, but may we turn from our sin.

In our love for one another, we may be called to confront our brother and sister for the wrong they may be doing.

Settling Differences

Dialoguing with one another is a sacrifice we must undertake to build up the community of the faithful, the church.

When a passenger on a Greyhound bus shouted that there was "a bum in the bathroom," he possibly set a new record for misunderstandings. Other passengers relayed the message to the front, where the drive heard "Bomb in the bathroom." The bus was evacuated. Interstate 95 southbound was closed, and traffic backed up for 15 miles. The police and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the bus before the incident was cleared up.

Communication sometimes gets garbled, including in the church. Are we willing to confront others charitably for the sake of principle?

In a recent "Peanuts" comic strip, Lucy is saying to Schroeder, "Do you think I'm the most beautiful girl in the world?" Naturally, she has to ask several times in different ways, until Schroeder, to be rid of her, says, "Yes." Lucy mopes disconsolately, "Even when he says it, he doesn't say it."

If our dialogues do not always go smoothly, have we asked ourselves why? Are we good listeners?

STEWARDSHIP

Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8)

The greatest demand love makes on us is that we help one another into the kingdom of God. Sometimes love requires us to speak a painful word of truth to awaken someone blinded by sin, recognizing that we ourselves are also sinners. Let us do for one another what we would have others do for us.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 31, 2008

Following the Lord means nothing less than the cross: offering ourselves with Jesus as a living sacrifice and not conforming ourselves to the world.

Following him will entail derision and scorn, yet the Lord is our help.

Jesus Rebukes Peter

Following Jesus means we must be ready to suffer.

Valerie Price isn't a name you will recognize. According to worldly standards she is a nobody. Last year, though, 23-year-old Valerie Price went to Somalia to work as a nurse. She wanted to help people who had nothing. She wanted to offer them a better way of life. Valerie was concerned about her safety, but nothing would stop her from doing her work. She was in charge of a feeding center in Mogadishu. Through her life-saving efforts, children who had been near starvation were fed. Valerie even established a school so the children could learn and have some hope for the future. Valerie was fortunate to see some of the fruits of her labors. Earlier this year Valerie made the national news. She was killed by armed bandits outside the school she had started. Valerie was willing to risk her life to help other people. Jesus tells us that in losing her life she actually found it.

Are we ready to put ourselves out, endure hardship, or even lose our lives for Jesus?

One at a time

What we do is nothing but a drop in the ocean. But if we didn't do it, the ocean would be one drop less.

We have no reason to be despondent or discouraged or unhappy, because we are doing it to Jesus.

I know there ate thousands and thousands of poor, but I think of only one at a time.

Jesus was only one and I take Jesus at his word. He has said, "You did it to me…"

My sisters, the brothers and I, we take one person, one individual person, at a time.

You can save only one at a time.

We can love only one at a time.

Mother Teresa

Stewardship

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Matthew 16:25

Jesus did not hesitate to take up the cross for our sake. Will we refuse to take it up for his sake and for the sake of all those for whom he died? I we do, we may gain temporary benefits, but what will we lose in the long run?

The Next Generation

The greatest legacy that we can leave to our children is that we have kept faith with God. In the midst or eroding values, we need to hand off to the next generation a history of God keeping covenant with Catholic Church.

We must, by faith, finish acquiring and building the land, leaving a thriving church to proclaim the goodness and salvation of our great God.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 24, 2008

As Eliakim is given authority as master of the palace, so does Jesus confer upon Peter authority to bind and loose.

To Jesus, who promised to be with his Church for all times, be glory for ever and ever!

Peter Confesses Jesus as Messiah

We must all confess that Jesus is our savior

There is a story about an irreligious farmer in one of our western states, who gloried in his irreligion, and he wrote a letter to a local newspaper in these words:

"Sir:

I have been trying an experiment with a field of mine. I plowed it on Sunday. I planted it on Sunday. I cultivated it on Sunday. I harvested it on Sunday. I carted the crop home to the barn on Sunday. And now, Mr. Editor, what is the result? This October I have more bushels to the acre from the field than any of my neighbors have."

He expected applause from the editor, who was not known to be a religious man himself. But when he opened the paper the next week, there, sure enough, was his letter printed just as he had sent it, but underneath it was the short but significant sentence: "God does not always settle accounts in October."

Specifically, when did we last show ourselves disciples of Jesus, or witness him in public?

YEAR OF ST. PAUL

2008 -2009

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of god, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Did You Know?

Paul was born about A.D. 8, in what is now Turkey.

Paul was a Pharisee and the son of a Pharisee.

Saul was his Jewish name; Paul was his Roman name.

The letters, or epistles, of St. Paul make up one-third of the New Testament.

Fourteen letters are attributed to Paul: Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, I and 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon.

Paul was beheaded outside the walls of Rome during the reign of Nero, probably between A.D. 65 and 67.

Tradition has always maintained that Paul was buried where the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the walls now stands.

Current archaeological evidence confirms this tradition; the chapel of relics in the basilica contains a set of chains said to be those which bound Paul in the last days before his execution.

STEWARDSHIP

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!

How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! Roman 11:33

Christ chose to build his Church upon a rock that broke in time of temptation. In healing the broken and repentant shepherd, Christ demonstrated his desire and ability to forgive and mend all the weaknesses that beset and divide the flock even now. Peter is our sign of hope.

RETROUVAILLE

During the weekend phase of Retrouvaille a series of presentations are given by a team of three couples and a priest. The team presents a technique of communication that enables you to take a good look at most areas of your relationship. After each presentation you have time in the privacy of your room to discuss the previous presentation. Wednesday August 27 Saint Monica

"One thing I ask of you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be." (St. Monica, to her son, St.Augustine)

Thursday August 28 Saint Augustine

As our body cannot live without nourishment, so our soul cannot spiritually be kept alive without prayer.

Friday August Martyrdom of John the Baptist

By celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: "He must increase, but I must decrease."

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 17, 2008

All people are invited to worship the Lord and to know his ways.

God's gifts and his call are to Jew and Gentile alike.

Jesus comes to recognize the universality of God's call in granting the request to Canaanite women.

The Syro-Phoenician Woman

Faith impels us to keep coming back to God, even when it may seem futile.

A glimmer of hope in the Serbo-Croatian war. A Franciscan Sister of mercy, herself a Croat who grew up in Serbia, has been working with rape victims from Bosnia as well as trying to find housing for the many refugees. Dressed in her nun's habit, she goes to a door and pleads with those who answer, "I have no place to stay. I'm hungry. Can you take me in?" Croatia is a deeply Catholic country, so the answer to the nun's plea is almost always, "Of course, Sister." Then the nun steps back to let the real refugees with her be seen. They are usually taken in by the family.

How are we to respond when God seems distant and does not answer our prayer?

Welcome this weekends to Father Mike Marini, Father Cyprian Consigilio and Father Angelo Re.

Thank you Fathers for you help to us in our Parish, especially with the Eucharistic.

"One must hold fast to prayer and never give it up. In this game, the one who lets it go loses everything. If it seems that no one is listening to you, cry out all the louder. If, like the Canaanite woman, you are told that you do not deserve the grace you are asking for, affirm like her that you expect no unusual favor, but only hope to eat the crumbs that fall from the divine table."

STEWARDSHIP

The Peter proceeded to speak and said, "In truth, I see that God shows no partiality."

Acts 10:34

God's plan is that, in Christ, there are no "insiders" or "outsiders." All will be made one in him. In this present age, we are called to work toward that profound unity through humble love of one another, so that "difference" may cease to mean "divisions."

URGENT

We need FOOD for the people in need!!!

Please remember to bring a food donation with you to and put it in the basket at the back of the church – thank you.

Thursday August 21 Saint Pius X

Undertook liturgical and canonical reforms especially communion for children and frequent communion for adults in 1907.

"My advice is that you receive Holy Communion frequently – if you cannot do so daily- and unite yourself to the Savior."

To the entire Parish and the people on the mountain,

My dear friends,

I do not have enough words to express my gratitude for all the prayers, support, love and help I have received from all of you since my surgery on August 5. I had a five hour operation followed by five days in hospital, and slowly my body is becoming stronger.

All of you made my recovery easier through the love of God with all your wonderful prayers and actions. I also offer my prayers for your good health and good health of your family and especially anybody who is currently ill.

Thank you to the Men's club who continue to build the picnic area for all of us in the Parish.

Beginning Monday 18, we will start the roof repairs to the Rectory and Community Center. During this time I will stay with my friend, Father Efrain, in Gonzales.

God bless you and thank you again.

In love and prayer; los quiere

Father Eugenio

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

August 3, 2008

Jesus has pity on the crowd and miraculously feeds them. In his compassion, the Lord answers all our needs, thus renewing his covenant of love with us.

Nothing can ever separate us from the love of Christ.

Multiplying Loaves and Fishes

God is concerned about our daily physical needs.

An elderly woman lived in one half of a duplex apartment. She was extremely poor, but a good woman. She prayed a great deal. In the other half of the duplex lived the owner, a man of no faith, no prayer, and no religion. He often made fun of the old lady's trust in God. One day this woman was praying, quite loudly, telling the Lord that she had no food in the house. The godless one heard her; got a loaf of bread, laid it at her front door, rang the bell, and then hurried back to his apartment, to hear through the wall her cry of delight: "Thank you, Lord, I just knew You wouldn't fail me." With a devilish grin the man came back to her front door and told her: "You silly old woman. You think God answered your prayer. Well, I'm the one who brought that loaf of bread." Undaunted, the old woman exclaimed: "Praise the Lord! He always helps me in my needs, even if He has to use the devil to answer my prayers."

When have we last come to aid of someone in need?

August 6 Transfiguration of the Lord

Transfigured in glory, the Son of Man has received kingship and dominion.

He will come again in glory!

The gospel scene of Christ's transfiguration… can be seen as an icon of Christian contemplation. To look upon the face of Christ is the task of every follower of Christ.

Pope John Paul II

August 9 is the anniversaries of the atomic explosions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945). As these events are recalled, all are urged to continue to pray for world peace.

STEWARDSHIP

Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good. (Romans 12:21)

By the grace of baptism we are bound to the Holy Trinity in a very special way. May we be conscious of this great grace and seek to grow ever closer in this union of love. Thus we will live always under the protection of the love of Christ from which no adversity can separate us.

YEAR OF ST. PAUL

"It is not longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me."

-Galatians 2:20

Why the Year of St. Paul?

Periodically, the Church sets aside an entire year to encourage all of us to focus on some particular and important aspect of our Faith. This year, we are given an opportunity to honor one of the great saints and founders of the early Church –the Apostle Paul.

In order to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth, Christians all over the world will celebrate "The Year of St. Paul" from June 28, 2008, to June 29, 2009.

As Pope Benedict XVI said in his announcement, this special "Pauline" year is an invitation to join with "The Apostle of the Gentiles, who dedicated himself to the spreading of the good news to all people, and spent himself for the unity and harmony of all Christians," adding, "May he guide us and protect us in this bimillenary celebration, helping us to advance in the humble and sincere search for the full unity of all the members of the mystical body of Christ."

"The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, my brothers and sisters. Amen." Saint Paul.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 27, 2008

The person with true wisdom, like Solomon, will seek the reign of God and treasure it above all else. It is more precious than gold and silver.

Thus one becomes conformed to the image of Christ, the Son.

Hidden Treasures

The Kingdom of God is a treasure found in daily life.

Ron DelBene was searching for answers in his life. Someone told him about a man in Los Angeles who has a reputation for being a very wise spiritual guide. On a business trip to the west coast Ron made an appointment to see this wise man… All he could think about was the upcoming meeting with the one who surely had the Answer.

He drove up the coast only to discover on arrival that the man was not there. The longer he waited the angrier he became. Finally the man arrived: "I don't know which was greater, my anger or my disappointment," Ron remembers. "This short, slightly built person didn't look at all like the wise man I had pictured. He didn't even have a beard!" …Ron thought perhaps the teacher would place his hands on my head or heart and I will explode in ecstasy. But Ron didn't. The wise teacher simply rattled off three things Ron should do. Before Ron had a chance to respond or ask any questions the Wise One left the room. Ron felt disappointed and disillusioned. He had traveled all that way and for what?

After Ron returned home, his wise, Eleanor, asked him about his meeting with the guru. She listened intensely to her husband's every word. "He told me that there are three things I must do," Ron said, "One, pray unceasingly. Two, go home and love my wife and children. Three, do what needs to be done." Eleanor looked straight at Ron and said, "Thank God, someone finally told you that!" What the teacher told was true. "In retrospect," Ron writes, the teacher "was a far wiser man than I appreciated at the time."

Our greatest treasure is at home: our family. Do our daily acts reflect this?

STEWARDSHIP

How much better to acquire wisdom that gold! To acquire understanding is more desirable than silver. (Prv 16:16)

In comparing the reign of God to the merchant, Jesus shows us God's priorities. In comparing it to the buried treasure, he asks us what our priorities are. Solomon, choosing wisdom over wealth, models a truly biblical scale of values.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 20, 2008

In his patience, the Lord allows both weeds and wheat to grow together, both saints and sinners to respond to salvation in the Kingdom. This Lord is good and forgiving, lenient to all, desiring repentance for our sins. May the Spirit assist us in our weakness.

Wheat among the Weeds

God allows creation to work itself out.

One day, when the inimitable Groucho Marx was getting off an elevator, he met a priest who immediately recognized the famous comedian. The excited clergyman extended his hand, saying, "I want to thank you for all the joy you've put into the world." Groucho replied, "And I want to thank you, Father, for all the joy you've taken out of it."

Many of us become so concerned with pulling out the weeds we lose the sense of hope and spirit of joy.

Do we experience deep joy because we are disciples of Jesus?

In its boughs nested all the birds of the air, under its branches all beasts of the field gave birth, in its shade dwelt numerous people of every race. (Ez 31:6)

His name, known first to only a handful of followers, is praised by people of every race and nation.

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 13, 2008

"The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest" (Ps.3)

May the soil of our hearts be receptive to the Word and carry it out through the presence of the Spirit.

Parable of the Seed

We are to bear fruit, leaving to God the measure.

Temple University in Philadelphia came into being through the seed money of a little girl in that city wanted to attend Sunday school but couldn't because the classes were full. The church was so small that there seemed no place for her. She began saving pennies to build a large church. Death removed the little girl, but under her pillow was found an old, red pocketbook in which were 57 pennies and a scrap of paper on which was written the reason why she was saving her pennies. The pastor who conducted the funeral told the story of those 57 pennies and it got into the newspapers. What could a little girl's 57 pennies do? Well, they did much. The tide of gifts which her example inspired flowed with increasing strength, and in six years the 57 pennies had become $250,000 which became the nucleus of yet grander things, for the Baptist Temple, with its Good Samaritan Hospital, and the great Temple University, which with its thousands of students, have come into being as the marvelous harvest of a little girl's seed pennies.

How do we support the many good ministries in our parish?

Summer Vacation from Church?

We hear people talking about taking the summer off from church. Here are a few questions for your reflection.

-Would you stop eating for the summer?

-Would you stop talking or sharing with your family and friends?

-Think about what happens when you stop a healthy exercise and diet program for three months. It's hard to start over again.

-Please make a special effort this summer to build your spiritual muscles...

To the Parishioners of Christ Child Church…..

As you may have heard, Fr. Eugenio's nephew, Jesus, died in a tragic accident in Mexico. Jesus leaves behind a wife and children. There was a collection taken last week to help support this family. If you missed the opportunity to donate and would like to help, your donation to Fr. Eugenio will be graciously accepted and forward to the family.

Thank you and God bless you and your family.

Kateri, lily of purity, prays for us. Kateri, consoler of the heart of Jesus, prays for us.

July 15, Tuesday: Bonaventure, bishop and doctor of the Church. He died in 1274 Franciscan friar, general for seventeen years; Cardinal bishop of Albano; authored biblical commentaries and many ascetical and spiritual treatises, special "Journey of the Soul into God;" known as the "Seraphic Doctor."

'When we pray, the voice of the heart must be heard more than the proceedings from the mouth.'

July 16, Wednesday: Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The scriptures speak of the beauty of Mount Carmel in Galilee where the prophet Elijah defended the faith of Israel in the living God. There, at the beginning of the 13th century, under the title of "St. Mary of Mount Carmel," the Order of Carmelites (today numbering about 2,200 religious) had its formal beginning.

May Our Lady of Mount Carmel be with you always. May she be the star that guides you and never disappears from your horizon. May she lead you now, throughout your life, and at its completion to a safe haven.

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

July 6, 2008

Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, came to bring peace to all people.

We are called to live in his Spirit, to be gracious, merciful, and compassionate to all.

"Come to Me"

Jesus is our support.

In Sierra Leone, West Africa, a preacher, David Wiggington, says people learn how to carry heavy burdens on their heads. "He said he learned of a woman in the capital city whose regular employment was that of being a 'human delivery truck.' Her assignment in this capital city of Freetown was to deliver engine blocks from one repair shop to other repair shops. Four men would lift the engine block onto a tray that she carried on her head and off she would go across town carrying this enormous weight. One day this lady came to her destination and found that no one was there to assist her in taking the load off her head. She waited as long as you can wait with an engine block on your head and decided to try to remove it herself. In so doing, she broke her neck and died."

Jesus has commissioned us to help support others in their burdens. How are we doing this?

Congratulations! And the Parish support to you!

"Life is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free and unhampered, but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now and again checked in a blind alley. But always, if we have faith, a door will open for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good for us."

PETER AND PAUL, APOSTLES

June 29, 2008

Peter, rescued from the power of Herod, and Paul, protected from his enemies, proclaims with their lives that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

Saint Peter, + c. 64 in Rome under Nero; Galilean fisherman; spokesman for the Twelve who became "Prince of the Apostles"; two epistles are ascribed to him; patron of those in the fishing industry.

Saint Paul, according to tradition, was martyred in Rome c. 67; Pharisee who became the "Apostle of the Gentiles"; his letters may be date from c.50-65; patron of the lay apostolate, the Cursillo Movement, and Catholic Action; also of Malta and Greece.

The Year of Saint Paul

Celebrating vespers in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls on the Via Ostia on June 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed a holy year dedicated to the second millennium of the birth of the apostle Paul. He indicated that the jubilee year will be marked by pilgrimages and other liturgical and cultural events in Rome and throughout the world. The Year of Saint Paul begins on Sunday, June 29, 2008, the solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, Apostles, and runs through June 29, 2009.

The Pauline Year will have a particular ecumenical dimension and will follow the example of the Apostle of the Gentiles, showing in a special way that "The action of the church is credible and effective only in as far as those who are part of it are prepared to pay in person for their faith in Christ in every situation." The Holy Father offered Peter and Paul as embodying a unity of witness until the moment of their martyrdom, "the supreme sacrifice of their lives." He said: "The Apostle of the Gentiles, who was particularly committed to bringing the Good News to all people, gave everything he had for unity and harmony among all Christians. May he guide and protect us in this bimillennium celebration, helping us to go forward in the humble and sincere search for full unity between all the members of the mystical body of Christ."

The Apostle Paul ---A Prayer

Glorious Saint Paul,

Most zealous apostle, martyr for the love of Christ, give us a deep faith. A steadfast hope, a burning love for the Lord; so that we can proclaim with you, "it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me."

Help us to become apostles, serving the church with a pure heart, witnesses to its truth and beauty amid the darkness of our days.

"To him be the glory, in the church and in Christ, now and forever." Amen.

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

June 22, 2008

You have been saved by the grace of God in the person of Jesus Christ. Hence, do not fear those who can take away your mortal life, for the Lord will protect and defend you, unto life everlasting.

Needed: One Great Savior

"All have sinned and are not good enough for God's glory, and all need to be made right with God by his grace, which is a free gift." Romans 3:23-24

The supreme force in salvation is God's grace. Not our works. Not our talents. Not our feelings. Not our strength.

Salvation is God's sudden, calming presence during the stormy seas of our lives. We hear his voice; we take the step.

We, like Peter, are aware of two facts: WE are going down and God is standing up. So we… leave behind the Titanic of self-righteousness and stand on the solid path of God's grace.

And, surprisingly, we are able to walk on water. Death is disarmed. Failures are forgivable. Life has real purpose. And God is not only within sight, he is within reach.

When we stand on the solid path of God's grace we find that life has real purpose.

How is this statement true in your life?

TREASURE FROM OUR TRADITION

If you could somehow transport a third-century Christian into your twenty-first-century Sunday Mass, once the initial shock wore off he or she would be more or less at home with the structure of the first part of the liturgy, the Word. The second part might be more difficult to comprehend. The stumbling block would be the book. We have a book, a missal or sacramentary, that is set down on the altar with a very precisely prescribed set of words for the priest to say and the people to sing at the Eucharistic Prayer. In the early days of the church, there were no set "formulas" for this prayer. The ancients would have raised eyebrows at our "bookishness" since they preferred to let the prayers roll forth from a gifted leaded of prayer. There was a basic shape to the prayer of thanksgiving, and almost general agreement that the words of Christ at the Last Supper, ought to be included.

By the second century, Justine Martyr wrote that the preside "gives thanks at some length… and when he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present give their assent by saying 'AMEN.'

In the words before books, people could memorize long passages of prose and poetry, and so it is easy to see how particular phrases or expressions passed from church to church.

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

June 15, 2008

Reconciled to God through the blood of Christ, we are a chosen people, "a holy nation," the sheep of God's flock.

We are called, as were the Twelve, to go forth and bear witness to reign of God.

Jesus Chooses Twelve Apostles

As apostles, we must have compassion on the crowds.

A bishop in the South of London came out of his cathedral one day and saw a small boy playing in the gutter. He asked him what he was doing with the mud. "I'm making a cathedral," he said. "Well," said the bishop, "If you have a cathedral, you must have a bishop." "Nah," said the boy, "I ain't got enough muck to make a bishop."

How do we see authority? Would we agree with the boy, or are the bishops getting a bad rap? Why?

God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

(Romans 5:8)

Lest we imagine that we must first free ourselves from sin and them approach God for approval of the fruits of our labor, let us recall that worthiness of life is the gift of God's love, not its price.

A look at Pope Benedict's New Encyclical

Christ Our Hope

Hope in the Bible

Hope is one of the great themes of Scripture. The pope observes a deep link between faith and hope, so much so that, in some passages, they are almost "Interchangeable." Benedict draws on the Letter to the Hebrews, Letter to the Ephesians and other New Testament letters to make his point. In Ephesians, he observes. "To come to know God –the true God- means to have hope." He discusses Paul's encounter with the Ephesians. "Before their encounter with Christ they were 'without hope and without God in the world' (Eph 2:12). "In spite of their empty gods, the Ephesians "were without God and consequently found themselves in a dark world, facing a dark future." Hope, of course, in and through Christ, is a different story.

Among other aspects of hope found in the letter to the Hebrews, Benedict discusses the link between faith and hope, as "Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen."

Translation issues and theological debates aside, the pope tells us this: "There are already present in us the things that are hoped for: the whole, true life." This presence of what is to come creates the certainty of hope, he says. How do we know it is here? Through the gift of faith. "Faith is not merely a personal reaching out towards things to come that are still totally absent: It gives us something. It gives us even now something of the reality we are waiting for, and this present reality constitutes for us a 'proof' of the things that are still unseen. Faith draws the future into the present, so that it is no longer simply a 'not yet.' The fact that this future exist changes the present; the present is touched by the future reality, and thus the things of the future spill over into those of the present and those of the present into those of the future."

Pope Benedicts uses the examples of the life and witness of St. Josephine Bakhita, the 19th-century African slave who transformed her pain and oppression into a powerful witness for hope.

St. Josephine was born in the Darfur region of southern Sudan in 1868. Sold into slavery, she received brutal treatment at the hands of a series of owners in Africa. Eventually she was taken by the magistrate who had bought her to his home in Italy and given, as a gift, to a friend. Bakhita accompanied that friend's child to Venice's Institute of Catechumens and found herself, overhearing the instruction, drawn to the Catholic faith. This humble woman became a fixture in the community, encouraging those around her to "pray for those do not know the Lord."

TENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
June 8, 2008

Religious piety and sacrificial offerings mean little to the Lord apart from love and mercy, offered in a spirit of praise and faithfulness.

Abraham serves as a model for our faith and trust in Jesus.

Jesus Calls Matthew

Perseverance is needed in following Jesus.

We Americans are suckers for the underdog. We ought to appreciate the story of Samuel Logan Brengle. Brengle gave up an opportunity to pastor one of the largest churches in Mid-America in order to join the ranks of the Salvation Army when that organization was just getting established in the United States. One of his early assignments was in Danbury, Connecticut, where Brengle's entire congregation often numbered less than a dozen people.

Determined to reach Danbury with the Gospel, each evening Brengle marched up and down its streets singing, preaching, and praising God.

One night, while marching with only two of his parishioners at his side, a large lame black man and a little hunchback girl, Brengle and his "congregation" were bravely singing a song, ironically entitled, "We're the Army That Shall Conquer." Suddenly, the small group came abreast a large and imposing Methodist Church. As Brengle surveyed that impressive edifice a voice seemed to say it him, "You fool, you! You might have been the pastor of a great church like that. But here you are instead, the pastor of a lame man and a little hunchback!" For a moment his voice faltered and his resolve weakened. But only for a moment. His thoughts turned to the many ways God had been dealing with him, and with a new sense of determination, he swung his arm vigorously and began leading his tiny band once again in singing "We're the Army That Shall Conquer!"

Do we think St. Matthew at time wondered if he should have remained a tax collector? What do we do in times of doubt about serous decisions we have made? How determined are we to carry on to the best of our insights and abilities?

Go and learn the meaning of the words, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice."  I did not come to call the righteous but sinners. (Mat 9:13)

Counting out the value of our offerings to God may make us proud; love will always keep us humble. As a successful tax collector, Matthew was a skilled money counter –but in making his decision to follow Jesus, he added to his arithmetical skill both wisdom and humility.

Liturgy Spotlight…

Sunday is a day of joy, rest, and solidarity in community for all Christians. The true source of joy is the utter conviction that the risen LORD is present to and within the gathered faithful.

-Reprinted from Liturgical ministry (Spring 2008)

Al look at Pope Benedict's New Encyclical
Christ Our Hope

"Christ Our Hope" is the theme of this pastoral visit, a sure sign that the themes of his November 2007 encyclical, Saved in Hope (Spe Salvi), will illumine the event the last visit to our country.

"In hope we were saved," Pope Benedict stats his second encyclical, quoting Romans 8:24 (his first encyclical, God Is Love, was in 2005). At the outset of Saved in Hope, Benedict draws a core biblical link between faith and hope, setting the stage for a long and rich reflection on the nature of hope for Christians. In short, our hope, given to us by God, is key to our Christianity.

NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
June 1, 2008

Jesus invites us to build our house, our lives, on a solid rock foundation by listening to His word and observing the statutes and decrees of the Lord.
We are justified by faith, by the grace of God.

End of Sermon on the Mount
Following God's law is prudent.

Someone said even the devil can quote scripture for his own ends. Have we ever been like the terrible-tempered Lucy in the "Peanuts" comic strip? Lucy comes into the room where Linus is watching TV. He says to her, "I was here first, so I get to watch what I want." Without a word Lucy marches to the set and flips the channel to her program. Linus protests. "Hey!" She quotes from the book of Matthew where it says, 'Many that are first will be last, and the last first.' Linus's response to this paradox sounds like something you or I would say. He mutters, "I'll bet Matthew didn't have an older sister."

Do we ever quote scripture more for show than for truth?

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST SUNDAY

May 25, 2008

The cup we share, is it not the blood of Christ? And the bread we break, it is not His body? Just as God fed the Israelites with manna from heaven, so too do we feed on the best of wheat, the bread of angels, food for the pilgrim journey.

Centrality of the Eucharist

The Lord is at the center of all things and yet in such a quiet, unobtrusive, elusive way. He lives with us, even physically, but not in the same physical way that other elements are present to us. This transcendent physical presence is what characterizes the Eucharist. It is already the other world present in this one. In the celebration of the Eucharist we are given an enclave in our world of space and time. God in Christ is really here, and yet his physical presence is not characterized by the same limitation of space and time that we know….

Contemplative life is a human response to the fundamental fact that the central things in life, although spiritually perceptible, remain invisible in large measure and can very easily be overlooked… The contemplative looks not so much around things but through them into their center. Through their center he discovers the world of spiritual beauty that is more real, has more density, more mass, more energy, and greater intensity than physical matter.

Corpus Christi

So small, so fragile, so helpless

The world is hungry for God and when Jesus came into the world He wanted to satisfy that hunger. He made Himself the Bread of Life, so small, so fragile, so helpless, and as if that was not enough, He made Himself the hungry one, the naked one, the homeless one, so that we can satisfy His hunger for love –for our human love, not something extraordinary but our human love.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

May 18, 2008

GOD sent His SON to save us and to forgive us, making us His adopted children. Like the TRINITY, may we be united in peace and love through the SPIRIT, through whom we offer GOD praise and glory.

"God So Loved…"

"There remain these three: faith, hope, and love.

But the greatest of these is love"

(1 Corinthians 13:13).

A little girl in an orphanage was a real problem child or so thought the headmistress. One day the mistress saw this child walk outside the main gate –forbidden by the rules of the house. The girl walked to a tree down the block and tied some pieces of paper to a tree. "Aha," thought the headmistress, now I've got her." She went out and retrieved the pieces of paper. On them the little girl had written, "To whoever finds this, I love you."

Loving relationships form the essence of the Trinity. Does it "in-form" our family and community relationship? How?

A Prayer for Pentecost

Spirit! Power and Passion of my being, press upon my heart your profound love.

Move through the fragments of my days; enable me to sense your fiery Presence consecrating my most insignificant moments.

Spirit! Source of Vision, Perceptive Guide, permeate the moments of my choices when falsehood and truth both call to me.

Turn me toward the way of goodness, so that I will always lean toward your love.

Spirit! Breathe of Life, Touch of Mystery; you are the ribbon of inner connection, uniting me with the groaning of all creation.

Because of you, my life gathers into an oneness.

Keep me attentive to this interdependence.

Fill my being with a constant compassion and a deep hope that knows no bounds.

Spirit! Dwelling Place, Sanctuary of Silence, you are the home for which I deeply yearn. You are the resting place for which I long.

I find both comfort and challenge in you.

Grant that I may keep my whole self open to the transforming power of your indwelling, that I may ever know the blessing of your tremendous companionship.

ASCENSION OF THE LORD

May 4, 2008

We Remember the Bread of Life

Jesus, Divine Bread-Baker, each time we gather to break this bread we share its richness in the midst of our poverty, and we remember:

We remember who you are as the bread of our lives:

You are the One who enters into the hungry places of our hearts, wanting to convince us of your deep, abiding love.

You are the One who invites us constantly to choose life, even when our world, and sometimes our own inner places, tastes of death, pain, and weariness.

You are the One who becomes our spiritual energy, inviting us to yearn for truth and to grow from its treasures.

We remember how you gift us with this bread:

This bread is strength for us when times are tough.

This bread must be broken before it can be shared.

This bread, when taken within, transforms the quality of our presence.

This bread binds us together and tempts us to forgiveness and all the other particles which gather to form community.

This bread, which houses the sacred in common earthen gifts, proclaims that the ordinary is but a mask of the holy.

We remember what this bread asks of us:

To be patient with our own growth, to recognize the process of our journey, to yield to the nourishment which is waiting for us if we will but come to the table.

To be your leaven so that faith can rise in the hearts of others.

To be so deeply wedded to compassion that our hearts always save a space for the tears of the world.

To give ourselves fully to the sojourning dimension of our lives, knowing that the manna of our God is blessing enough for our need as we yearn for our true home.

And finally, we remember:

That our hearts are filled with gratitude for this good gift.

Within us all that is holy cries out: Come, Bread of Life, come!

(Out of the ordinary by Joyce Rupp)

May is a month which the piety of the faithful has long dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. This is the moth during which Christian, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and venation; and it is the moth in which a greater abundance of God's merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother's throne.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

April 27, 2008

The people of Samaria come to worship the Lord and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is this same Spirit that leads us into the truth. In the body, Jesus was put to death; in the Spirit, he was raised to life. We are called to this same glory.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

We now walk in the Spirit Jesus promised us.

Dorothy Pryce was listening to a Christian radio station as she drove to the grocery store one morning. A person was talking about kindness. Then he said, "I wonder how many of you are listening to me on your car radio and thinking of how you can be kind while driving?" Dorothy began thinking about what he was saying. A few blocks away, she saw a woman waiting in her car to come out of her driveway. Traffic was heavy; Dorothy knew this woman would have a hard time getting out. She slowed down to let her out. The woman smiled and waved at her.

When she got to the grocery store she saw a parking space. As she started pulling in, another car on the opposite side also started pulling in. Dorothy backed out and found another parking spot. As they both got out of their cars, the driver of the other car said, "I can't believe what you just did. Anyone else would have made me back out."

Dorothy explained what she had heard on the radio about showing love. The two women began talking. Dorothy discovered the woman had just moved into the area, didn't know anyone, and was looking for a church. "I invited her to come to our church," Dorothy says, "and a strong friendship has blossomed from our chance meeting and a small act of kindness."

Does our Spirit-life blossom in acts of kindness? How?

Your Chance to Join the Circle of Caring!

Once year Catholic Charities invites you, as parishioners, to join the Circle of Caring. The Catholic Charities Annual Appeal helps support the social service efforts of the Church of the Monterey Diocese. We ask for your generosity of funds, your prayers and on occasion your time to join in this special outreach to over 25,000 families and individuals annually. The focus of the outreach is the working poor, disenfranchised, those struggling with emotional issues, and those working toward citizenship. Our services are not a hand out but rather a way of easing the burden of those less fortunate, thereby strengthening families and communities. The 15 staff members of Catholic Charities work in the four counties of Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and San Luis Obispo. We are not funded through the Annual Bishop's Appeal or any other Diocesan revenues and that is why we count on you. So, on behalf of all who count on Catholic Charities us thank you.

Children from the Religious Education Program (2nd grade) will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time after Mass on Sunday. This is in preparation for receiving First Holy Communion next month.

To all the children receiving the sacrament of Confession, congratulations - we are very proud of you and will remember you in our prayers.

"Penance requires… the sinner to endure all things willingly, be contrite of heart, confess with the lips, and practice complete humility and fruitful satisfaction."

It must be recalled that…this reconciliation with God leads, as it were, to other reconciliations, which repair the other breaches caused by sin. The forgiven penitent is reconciled with himself in his inmost being, where he regains his innermost truth. He is reconciled with his brethren whom he has in some way offended and wounded. He is reconciled with the Church. He is reconciled with all creation.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

April 20, 2008

We are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood" called to place our faith and trust in the Spirit of Jesus who guides the community of faith.

Pope Benedict urges a more just society

Our Pope Benedict, last Wednesday urged Americans and their leaders to base social and political decision on moral principles to create a more just society.

Our Pope called for "patient efforts of international diplomacy to resolve conflicts" and promote progress around the world.

He said to all Americans: "I come as a friend, a preacher of the Gospel and one with great respect for this vast pluralistic society,"

The Pope said to us: "Were a driving force in a process that 'forged the soul of the nation' and won world admiration.

The Pope said freedom "is not only a gift but also a summons to personal responsibility" toward the less fortunate.

"Democracy can only flourish, as your founding fathers realized, when political leaders and those whom they represent are guided by truth and bring the wisdom born of firm moral principle to decisions affecting the life and the future of the nation."

Our Pope ended his speech with a loud "God Bless America."

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

April 6, 2008

Through the blood of Jesus we have been delivered from the power of sin.

We recognize him in the breaking of the bread, the one whom God raised from the dead and who now sits at his right hand forever.

On the Road to Emmaus

We see Jesus alive in his word, in the breaking of bread, and in the community of believers.

Archbishop Rembert Weakland of Milwaukee said in an interview in the magazine The Critic: "If younger people are having an identity problem as Catholics, I tell them to do two things: Go to Mass every Sunday, and work in a soup kitchen. If one does those two things over a period of time, then something will happen to give one a truly Catholic identity. The altar and the marketplace—these two—must be related to each other; when they are, one works better, and one prays better."

Is our celebration of the Eucharist completed by our loving deeds?

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
March 30, 2008

Thomas believed because he saw the risen Jesus. Although we have never seen Him, we believe in Him. We give thanks to the Lord for this gift of faith, especially when we gather for the breaking of the bread and the prayers.

Listen To Your Heart

It's there (in your heart) that Jesus speaks most intimately to you. Praying is first and foremost listening to Jesus who dwells in the very depths of your heart. He doesn't shout. He doesn't thrust himself upon you. His voice is an unassuming voice, very nearly a whisper, and the voice of a gentle love. Whatever you do with your life, go on listening to the voice of Jesus in your heart. The listening must be an active and very attentive listening, for in our restless and noisy world Jesus' loving voice is easily drowned in our restless and noisy world Jesus' loving voice is easily drowned out.

Easter Action

Practice attentive "Listening" to your own thoughts. Challenge each and every unkind and angry thought that contaminates your mind. Henri J.M. Nouwen

EASTER SUNDAY: RESURRECTION OF THE LORD

March 23, 2008

The Easter Challenge

You believe because you can see…

Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.

-John 20:29

Every year it happens: earth shakes her sleepy head, still a bit wintered and dull, and feels new life stirring.

Every year cocoons give up their treasures, fresh shoots push through shine with green, and singing birds find their way home.

Every year we hear the stories

Empty tomb, surprised grievers, runner with news and revelation, unexpected encounters, conversations on the road, tales of nets filling with fish, and breakfast on seashore.

And every year the dull and dead in us meets our Easter challenge:

To be open to the unexpected, to believe beyond our security, to welcome God in every form, and trust in our own greening.

"Pastor's Business Card"

A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was a home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door.

Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote "Revelation 3:20" on the back of it and stuck it in the door.

When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, "Genesis 3:10".

Reach for you Bible and check out the citation – it will make you laugh!!

Please next Sunday you give Fr. Eugenio the citation and he will give to you a gift!

Have a Beautiful EASTER!

Thanks to all the people of God and the Parish who give their time and talent in the work and ministries for Easter - Lector, Eucharistic Ministries, Musicians, Singers; the hard working people who helped make the church environment beautiful and prepared the floral displays – thank you everybody. PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD'S PASSION

March 16, 2008

The Passion

By His passion and death Jesus redeems us.

After years of wandering, Clint Dennis realized something important was missing from his life. He decided to attend church. As he entered a church for the first time he noticed people putting on long robes. They were also tying ropes around their waists and wrapping headdresses around their heads. "Come, be a part of the mob," a stranger told him.

It was Palm Sunday and the church was re-enacting the Crucifixion in costume. He would be part of the crowd that shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Hesitantly he agreed. Then another stranger hurried up to him. "The man who is supposed to play one of the thieves on the cross didn't show up," he said. "Would you take his place?" Again Clint agreed and was shown to the cross where he would look on as Jesus died.

Just then, though, something about Clint's manner caught a member's eye. He turned to Clint and asked, "Have you ever asked Jesus to forgive your sins?" "No," Clint replied softly, "but that's why I came here." There beneath the cross, they prayed, and Clint asked Jesus to come into his heart. What the church didn't know was that Clint had been in prison for ten years. He was a real thief. Even after his release he had gone on stealing cars and trucks until he realized that something was missing from his life.

Have we drawn on Jesus' passion and death as a source of strength to forgive others—and ourselves?

CHRISM MASS

The Chrism Mass with our Bishop Most Reverend Richard Garcia, D.D. and all the priests of our Diocese, will be celebrated on Monday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Madonna del Sasso Church 320 E. Laurel Dr. Salinas.

We need members of our Parish community to go in the name of our parish to receive the Oils for all of us.

About Foot Washing

Peter's response to Jesus' intent to wash his feet has been echoed by many Catholics through the ages. Why such resistance? Having one's feet washed is really a rather intimate experience. Our feet are often sensitive and ticklish. They bear the weight of our bodies day after day, often becoming scarred and blemished over time. Even many people who wear sandals in our culture wear them with socks to hide their feet from view.

At first thought, it would seem that washing another's feet would be more difficult. That involves an act of humiliation and service, which is precisely why Jesus told us to imitate his example. Yet allowing another to wash one's feet also requires humility. It necessitates dropping our defenses and putting ourselves into the hands of another.

-Fr. Lawrence Mick

"You Will Never Wash My Feet"

ANNUAL MINISTRIES APPEAL—The Office of Stewardship thanks you and your parish for your generous support of the Annual Ministries Appeal which benefits eleven major ministries in our diocese. Many parishes have already successfully launched in 2008 and we appreciate every donation with prayer. After exceeding our diocesan goal in 2007, over $70,000 in rebates was returned to parishes.

Wow, we are off to a great start! We have received 10 pledges and/or donation totaling over $3,860.00. What I think is so great is that the amounts are so varied, like us parishioners. Every level of giving is so greatly appreciated. Thank you to all who have replied to the Bishop's appeal so quickly. Remember, if you did not receive an envelope you can find some in the vestibule and in the peas.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

March 2, 2008

Samuel does not see as God sees in the choice of David, who is anointed with oil.

As Jesus cures the blind man, so too are we brought from darkness into light through the grace of baptism.

Look for the Spirit

The spiritual life can only be real when it is lived in the midst of the pain and joys of the here and now. Therefore we need to begin with a careful look at the way we think, speak, feel, and act…in order to become more fully aware of our hunger for the Spirit. As long as we have only a vague inner feeling of discontent with our present way of living and only an indefinite desire for "things spiritual," our lives will continue to stagnate….

Our first task to dispel this vague, murky feeling of discontent and to look critically at how we are living our lives. This requires honesty, courage, and trust. We must honestly unmask and courageously confront our many self-deceptive games. We must trust that our honesty and courage will lead us not to despair, but to a new heaven and a new earth.

Jesus began to speak, and taught them saying: "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25-26)

Lenten Action

In honor of our heavenly Father, feed the birds this Lent. Perhaps create festive decorations of seeds and nuts to attract and feed hungry birds and squirrels. Do not forget to put out fresh water.

STEWARDSHIP

Alms giving teach us the generosity of love. Saint Joseph Benedict Cottolengo forthrightly recommends: "Never keep an account of the coins you give, since this is what I always say: if, in giving alms, the left hand is not to know what the right hand is doing, then the right hand, too, should not know what it does itself" In this regard, all the more significant is the Gospel story of the widow who, out of her poverty, cast into the Temple treasury "all she had to live on" (Mk 12:44). Her tiny and insignificant coin becomes an eloquent symbol: this widow gives to God not out of her abundance, not so much what she had, but what she is. Her entire self.

A Lenten Reflection

I was standing in an aisle in the grocery store when a sharp spiritual pain pinched my awareness and let me see the rest of the world. I was appalled. I realized I could buy anything in the store that I wanted. The richness of my life slapped me in the face as I stood there, thinking about how many people do not even have a store like that available to them, let alone the money to purchase what is in it.

Not long after that experience, I read some statistics in an article by Joan Chittister that increased my awareness of my own richness in light of the world's poverty:

Social statisticians tell us that if the earth's population were a village of 100 people, there would be 57 Asians, 21 Europeans, and 8 Africans. Only 14 people in the village would be from both North and South America combined. Seventy of the people in this village would be nonwhite. Seventy would be non-Christian. Seventy would be illiterate. Fifty of them would be malnourished. Fifty percent of all the money in the village would be held by six people- and all of them would be white, male Americans…

But there is also hope…? There are people in wealthy nations whose awareness of the rest of the world is making a difference. They want to help. They are working to change the great pap between the haves and have-nots. I see the choices these generous and compassionate people are making. Their selflessness and kind-heartedness encourages me to make better decisions about how I live and how I give. I do not believe that it is a matter of condemning a comfortable life but, rather, of wanting this for all people…it is essential that we are reminded often that each human being is our sister or our brother…Lent is a good time to re-enter the heart of this teaching.

Joyce Rupp, Out of the ordinary.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
February 17, 2008

Lent 2008

Remember, you are dust,
And to dust you will return.

Turn away from sin
And be faithful to the Gospel.

"Christ made Himself poor for you"

2 Corinthians 8:9

The Transfiguration

Jesus gives us a vision to live by: Himself.

Rabbi Abraham Twersky tells a story about his great-grandfather who was sitting with other rabbinical scholars studying the Talmud when it was decided to take a break for refreshments. One of the groups offered to pay for the refreshments, but there was no one who volunteered to go for them. According to Twersky, in his book Generation to Generation, his great-grandfather said, "Just hand me the money, I have a young boy who will be glad to go."

After a rather extended period, he finally returned with the refreshment, and it become obvious to all that the rabbi himself had gone and performed the errand. Noticing their discomfort, the rabbi explained: "I didn't mislead you at all. You see, many people outgrow their youth and become old men. I have never let the spirit of my youth depart. And as I grew older, I always took along with me that young boy I had been. It was that young boy in me that did the errand."

Our transformation begins in our change of attitude.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

February 10, 2008

LENT

The annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the holy mountain of Easter.

Lent runs from Ash Wednesday (Feb.6) until the Mass of the Lord's Supper exclusive on Holy Thursday (March 20).

Turn away from sin

And be faithful to the Gospel.

Remember, you are dust,

And to dust you will return.

Each year, Lent offers us a providential opportunity to deepen the meaning and value of our Christian lives, and it stimulates us to rediscover the mercy of God so that we, in turn, become more merciful toward our brothers and sisters.

In the Lenten period, the Church makes it her duty to propose some specific tasks that accompany the faithful concretely in this process of interior renewal: these are prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

For this year's Lenten Message, I wish to spend some time reflecting on the practice of alms giving, which represents a specific way to assist those in need and, at the same time, an exercise in self-denial to free us from attachment to worldly goods. The force of attraction to material riches and just how categorical our decision must be not to make of them an idol, Jesus confirms in a resolute way: "You cannot serve God and mammon"

(Luke 16:13).

Almsgiving helps us to overcome this constant temptation, teaching us to respond to our neighbor's need and to share with others whatever we possess through divine goodness.

According to the teaching of the Gospel, we are not owners but rather administrators of the goods we possess: these, are not to be considered as our exclusive possession, but means through which the Lord calls each one of us to act as a steward of His providence for our neighbor. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, material good bear a social value, according to the principle of their universal destination (# 2404).

In The Gospel, Jesus explicitly admonishes the one who possesses and uses earthly riches only for self. In the face of the multitudes, who, lacking everything, suffer hunger, the words of Saint John acquire the tone of a ringing rebuke: "How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses to help?" (1 John 3:17).

In those countries whose population is majority Christian, the call to share is even more urgent, since their responsibility toward the many who suffer poverty and abandonment is even greater. To come to their aid is a duty of justice even prior to being an act of charity.

"Christ made Himself poor for you"

Bishop's Annual Ministries Appeal 2008

Blessings & Promise

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Diocese

I thank you for your past generosity and commitment to our Diocesan vision and mission. I am humbled by the generous participation of over 6,500 donors in the 2007 Appeal year.

I learned that in 1968 our Catholic population was 125,000 and baptism numbered 3,081. Forty years later, our Catholic population is near 200,000 and the total infant and adult baptisms this year of 2007 was 6,139. This amazing growth challenges us as a people of God.

As this is my first appeal to you, I ask your increased generous support, both prayerful and financial, in spreading in four counties ranging from Christ Child in Los Gatos to St. Joseph's, Nipomo. Our Diocesan ministries depend on YOU to meet real human needs…

People of God, you exemplify the best in sacrificial giving. I look forward to a record-breaking appeal this year.

You are remembered daily in my prayer and Mass.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Richard J. Garcia Bishop of Monterey.

DECREE OF ESTABLISHMENT

After consulting with the pastors of San Agustin Parish, Scotts Valley and of St. Joseph's Parish in Capitola and also the Presbyteral Council, I hereby establish in accord with Canon 216 # 1 the parish of Christ Child, Summit, with the following geographical boundaries:

The northernmost boundary is that currently shared with Boulder Creek. It begins at the corner of Summit Road and Bear Creek Road and travels south along Summit Road to Upper Zayante Road, continuing south to the lower south east corner of sector # 25 parish boundary. At the lower south east corner of sector # 25 parish due west to the point at which it meets Highway 17. This Drive leaving all of Glenwood Drive in Scotts Valley. The line Laurel Drive. The boundary would then cut straight across in Road where it intersects San Jose-Soquel Road. At this point the boundary would cut across in a north easterly direction to Summit Road along the line currently shared by Capitola, Aptos and Corralitos. From Summit Road at this point the boundary line would follow Summit Road in a westerly direction back to Bear Creek Road. This border line is the county and diocesan boundary.

This is effective May 1, 1983

Most Revered Thaddeus Shubsda, D.D. Bishop of Monterey.

Rev. Msgr. Tod D. Brown, V.G. Chancellor.

Back in time!

Christ Child Community

1966 was formed as a mission of St. Joseph's Church in Capitola; Father Francis L. Markey worked with the people in the community to choose the land on which the current church is located (in Santa Cruz County, Monterey Diocese).

1969 San Agustin Parish was founded in Scott's Valley and the Christ Mission was made part of it and thus it stayed up to the period when church hood was actively sought. Father Michael McDonald was the Pastor of the San Agustin Church and the Christ Child Mission, later Father Joe Leonard.

The Formation Period 1980-1983

June 1980 Father Mike Cicinato was assigned to San Agustin with the responsibility of working solely with Christ Child Mission. Fr. Mike was offered the opportunity to reside in the home of Mr. Patrick & Gail Mantey of the Christ Child Community while a rectory and community center was being built to house a Priest and accommodate parish activities.

May 2, 1983 Father Joe Leonard was appointed Pastor of Christ Child Church effective May 2, 1983 to May 20, 1990 Father Leonard's going away party, as he prepared to retire at age 70. June 1990 - Father John Murphy became Pastor until 1995.

January 15, 1995 Father Marvin Steffes, C.PP.S became the new Pastor of Christ Child Church until 2003.

2003-2004 Father Paul Valdez Administrator.

April 2004 Father Eugenio Aramburo

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JANUARY 27, 2007

We have seen a great light: Jesus, the Messiah, who heals us of our sin and who is our unity and peace.

Matthew 4:12-23

Jesus Calls John and James

Jesus calls us as he did his apostles

A boy in a Sunday school class became increasingly uncomfortable as the teacher spoke about dying and going to heaven. The teacher said, "Put up your hand if you want to go to heaven." Everyone but the one boy put up their hands. The teacher was shocked. "Don't you want to go to heaven?" The boy responded, "Yes, but not with this bunch."

Who are the people we would rather not have to deal with?
